🦋 More info below! 🦋
Today I will show you how to fertilize Phalaenopsis Orchids! This will be an easy, detailed tutorial, to help you chose an Orchid fertilizer and use them with your orchid!
Did you miss our previous episodes? Watch them here:
How to repot Phalaenopsis orchids • Orchid Care for Beginn...
How to water Phalaenopsis orchids
• Orchid Care for Beginn...
It is important to always use special orchid fertilizers at the beginning, as they are suited for the nutrient needs of orchids. You can chose powder, or liquid orchid fertilizers.
If you want to be extra safe, you can always use half the amount recommended and see how your orchid reacts. If everything goes well, you can start dosing the recommended amount.
Always flush the pot and medium thoroughly with plain water. This will remove possible salt build ups and keep your orchid's roots healthier!
Always fertilizer when you water orchids, following the tutorial above. Never add the fertilizer undiluted, it will damage the roots!
I use the MSU fertilizer for the past 3 years and I really like it! It has a complete menu of nutrients and suits my watering possibilities. You can find it for sale at rePotme here go.missorchidg...

I was gifted a phalaenopsis for my birthday last month by my employers and one of them told me she'd long given up trying to care for them; they always died! I'd never had any house plants before and never even considered getting one, so the thought of trying to keep this orchid alive was intimidating. This channel has made orchid care feel so simple for even the worst plant owners like myself; I went from total fear of this one orchid dying to feeling like I could turn this into an actual hobby and have a whole bunch of plants! You're great and I appreciate you!!

fertilizerss going down either the sewer of rainwater system can lead to environmental contamination... used fertilizer is best used on other plants or grass, where the chances of anything spreading is much reduced. Fertilisers have been held responsible for massive algae blooms on corals reefs. Just putting it out there as part of the larger discussion on how to be responsible with our hobby.

Usually it's not a problem if it's going down the drain because it goes through treatment centers. Runoff from farms into bodies of water is, by far, the main contributor to fertilizer pollution. However, you make a good point when it comes to orchids that are kept outside, as the runoff may not end up in a treatment center 👍🏽

@@o_o8203 In treatment centers a specific chemical has to be targeted. This is why we see bodies of water that contain wild fish that have antibiotics, caffeine and other chemicals in their systems (from people peeing while on meds, flushing pills, dumping coffee/soda into drain, etc.). Treatment plants don't target these things, therefore they are not sorted out.

Hi Guys, today I came back from a 4 day trip...I'm a beginner, so my neighbor gave me her dead phalen. plant several weeks ago. So I had no clue how to care for it, so I came here and watched a bunch of MissOrchidGirl videos. I repotted, took off all dead roots, cut off a dead shoot, left the yellow leaf alone and changed the medium and watered the plant..So today upon my return I found the orchid plant had bloomed 2 buds. I am so thrilled to see the blooms. So I will give it a hand at rescuing what appear to be dead plants. I have her outside on a ledge where she get very little morning sun, and is shaded the remainder of the day. I didn't even fertilize her...but need to check this video. That yellow top leaf just dried off by itself and fell off...

I really like the suggestion of diluting the recommended amount to a fourth and fertilizing every time you water. When you say to flush on the 5th week, do you only use water that week and resume fertilizing on the 6th week, or do you do a fertilizing soak after the flush on the 5th week?

Orchid posts are slotted for breathability, and transparent so the roots can get light. Do you _leave_ your orchids in their opaque, decorative pots all the time? If you do, I don't understand how this would not be bad for the orchid. I am new to orchids and really appreciate all your videos. 🙂

Ok so if you are fertilizing every week or every time you need to water with a weaker solution of fertilizer, how do you store the leftover fertilizer solution? Or do you just make enough for each watering? I only have one orchid so making a gallon every time is a waste, where i could just make a gallon and store it for the entire month and use that for each watering. Hope my question makes sense.

I've repotted and watered, and it's already looking much better and the leaves are almost not limp at all. The question is about the aerial roots. There are plenty of roots in the medium, and they're looking much better. The aerial roots though are still very wrinkled and shriveled. They are most definitely still alive though. Should I be misting or watering the aerial roots regularly too or will they plump back up once the main plant and leaves are ok?

There is a lot of confusing and wrong information about it already, I don't want to add to it, just want to be sure first. This year I will be making some trials with boosters and supplements and see if they make a difference :)

@@MissOrchidGirl Thanks, Dani. It is indeed sometimes confusing information out there... I was thinking also about another video subject, some other things that are confusing for me and maybe for others too... the pH and TDS and ppm... what in the world are those things supposed to be right for the orchid types and how do you keep those in balance, and how do you correct, for example, a bucket of water when you made the pH too high or too low ?... I recently bought 2 paph and 2 phragmipediums and I've read/heard on some video's that you have to be very carreful with the pH... it freaks me out that I might kill my slippers ! :/ I watched on some video's how some people do it, but really I don't get it what and how and why !

Don't over think it, when you start to mess about blindly is when you'll have issues. If you are using bark or sphagnum you most likely don't need to adjust anything ;)

@@MissOrchidGirl Oh, thank you, I am using bark and sphagnum moss because I saw it how you are doing with some sensitive orchids. For the moment, mine are ok. But of course, sometimes it can be deceiveing...one moment they are ok and then , bam, hell breaks loose ! :D I just wish they would grow faster to see indeed what's their situation ! Thanks for the advice, I've learned soooo much from you !

Orchid Newbie here. My orchid is stressed. Got her about a year ago and all of a sudden she started stressing = root damage and very few good ones. It has no flowers or any sign of any coming. I removed dead roots and put it in RO water culture with nutrients☆ because I didn't know what to do but get it out of its pot and remove all dead roots. My home is always 71° and very dry. ☆ RO water w ferts = [Gal mix] orchid nutrient 1/2"strength, CalMag 1/4 strength, fish/seaweed fertilizer (1/2 t). Questions are, how can I stimulate root growth and revitalize the leaves before they are really damaged. Which of the 3 media you show in your beginner series will be best. And what size pot do you recommend. Your site has been so beneficial to me. Hope to hear from you. Thank you. Joanne

Do you have a video on how to know if your orchid is dying or just losing it’s flowers? I have a mini phal and I have been taking really good care and the roots looks great but the flowers are falling and the stem is turning yellow only right behind it but not the whole flower spike.

Ha! That’s what I’ve been doing with my moth orchids I got last year. They’re currently reblooming so I guess it’s safe? I know it’s dechlorinated and contains some nitrates, but I’m not sure it provides all they need. I’m here trying to decide if I should get an orchid specific fertilizer to maybe provide additional nutrients.

What you could do to keep the fertilizer from getting damp is place a silica packet in the jar. The silica will absorb the moisture and keep it fresh...

I did rice and broccoli, which was soak in water, I used the water from it as fertilizer, I don't know if this is a good thing for orchids.. I found some info about home made ones for orchids online but I don't know if they are true.... so a video about this will help. ;3; We sadly cannot afford this kind of fertilizer all the time, so if there is another way to feed our orchid that be awesome.

Hi Danny. Yes orchids are slow growers and hard to see if anything had happened. But when you see new roots begginning to push out or a new leaf out the crown is almost like seeing happy sap and time to break out the happy dance shoes 😳. I too see that the MSU is fairly hydroscopic and have thrown away portions upon it turning color and aquiring a smell. Wonder if portioning, individually wrapping in cellophane and freezing would be a good method to preservation and usage. But don't take out of freezer and mistaken for leftovers or foods stuff or grated cheese.

Thanks for your videos . Most instructive. Question: the indoor-plant (liquid) fertilizer I bought at the local department store here in Berlin, which cost all of a few bucks for 3l, provides the very same macro- and microelements as shown in your video. Its NPK is 736 - the first (N) and last (K) exactly like the Dyna-Gro you show at (3:37) and the phosphorus at three exactly like the stuff you use. Couldn't I use that in small dosages?

Hi! I am new to your site but have watched so many of your videos and have learned so much. I'm a beginner and had 4 Phalaenopsis that I was on the verge of killing. So I have now followed your instructions for re-potting in a good medium. I ordered the FeedMe from Repotme but they do not say to soak the roots for 10 minutes - just to flush with water first and then the solution containing the fertilizer. Would you still recommend soaking?
