ORBITAL - The Box Part 1 - IN SIDES album - Paul and Phil Hartnoll

Музыка

ORBITAL - "The Box Part 1" from the IN SIDES album
Written by Paul and Phil Hartnoll
Drums : Clune
Some facts about this track:-
Drums supplied by Clune
The bell part started as a cyclical sequencer experiment
The sounds reminded them of a cold war drama soundtrack. It was an attempt to do a Steve Reich style, poly rhythm track but soon moved into a 60s style spy score.
The Dulcimer sound, a favourite from the 60s and 70s spy films, took a long time and effort to make the sample.
Paul split the keyboard with identical sides so he could play it like a dulcimer player
A love letter to John Barry. The idea was to mix great scoring with dance music.
The Box could be a TV but it could be a coffin or a packing crate or a small box with micro film...

i always felt this album was the masterpiece album, a more concept album with an audible see through, thematically. It sounds to me like baroque or classical music like Vivaldi or Mozart played on synths, its textured and multilayered, delicate, softer and painstakingly thought through......i thought it showed a little more maturity and focus then the preceding albums, more IDM then rave, i remember at the time the anticipation for it, the album cover is far busier and colourful, the art house vids with Tilda Swinton, pure magic that video, its so unique amongst the work, a much quieter experience, don't get me wrong all the albums are fantastic, but by middle of nowhere we are back to a very loud bombastic carnival sound, this album though is really special it will be going on the spaceship when we leave the solar system.

Really the best Orbital made in my opinion. This song i can hear anytime, never gets bored or or gets overplayed. Listened to this song lost of timea ans i stil find out new things. Today i learned that it isn't a harpsicord but a dulcimer for instance.. really amazing that that instrument was used, it really makes this song great. Along with the slower drums and the tubular(?) bells it's classical music in a new jacket. I hope part 2,3 and 4 will be uploaded too, this version isn't "finished"

This is the album which introduced me to Orbital, and this is the track which transported me beyond the relams of merely listennning. It evokes mysterious tales of hidden corners and complex plots and is suffused with the imprint of John Barry. The whole album is a symphonic masterpiece of subtle electronic tunes and I love to come back to it again and again.

I'd only just first heard The Box part 1 a year ago when I listened through In Sides. The only song I'd ever heard from the album was The Box part 2 back around 2005. I'd never cared as much for The Box 2 as I did for the Brown Album tracks, but hearing part 1 in the context of the In Sides record helped me make so much more sense of part 2. I'm a much bigger fan of part 1 though. The chord progression is lovely and more varied than in part 2.
