So I had the Milwaukee M18 random orbital sander and decided to purchase the new m18 sheet sander. I tested both on stripping paint from my kitchen cabinets to prep for paint. With both using 80 grit sand paper the sheet sander was way faster at stripping the paint. I figured it was going to be the other way around lol. Was only going to keep one but I don’t know which to keep so guess I’m keeping them both 😂

You are not alone! I am stripping the last bits of paint from trim and my Craftsman 2.0A 1/4 sheet sander is probably twice as fast as my Makita 5” random orbital. Both sanders are using 80 grit 3M pro grade. Go figure!
Thank you for this! Informational videos like this, are very valuable.

Great video! I would like to add, if you already have an oscillating tool, you can purchase a sanding attachment to reach those same corners that a sheet sander can fit into. Cheers!

I only have random orbit sander and I use it on bodywork on vehicles coz i only have a small compressor which cannot use DA sander. The good alternative is picking random orbit sander. Its like heaven-sent tool on prepwork. Cutting bodyfiller fast, flat and closest to the body as it could be rather blocking it to size. Also I use them to locate dents on huge panels whicu makes you more productive. Now i want to try finising sander for color sanding. ( getting rid of orange peel. ) My arms grow sore I sand only by hand. Anyway. Clear and concise video. Thank you!

I'm in need of a new sander, so your video is very helpful to me. One thing stood out and that was aligning the holes on the orbital sander. I think I would cut two short dowels to stick into the sander opposite of each other, then slide the matching holes down the dowel. That should be quick, and maximize alignment.

Orbital sanders are more suited for rough sanding work. They are more powerful than sheet sanders. Sheet sanders are good for lighter sanding jobs and there is less risk of over sanding. Sheet sanders are also better for getting into those corners because of the square sheets. .
Thanks

This video was so helpful! I'm gonna go with an orbital sander for my DIY project for my dresser and nightstand. What grit should I use to remove the paint and other layers? Should try some type of remover?
@Caliber8Tools
2 жыл бұрын
You can start with a coarse grit paper and work up to a finer grit. Is your dresser pressed wood. Anything from 40 grit to start on up to 150 to 220 fine grit to smooth it out. As far as removers, soapy water or a heat gun and putty knife are some chemical free options. Nail polish remover or paint thinner are options but the chemicals are harsh.

@@Caliber8Tools Do you have a video that'll help me tell the difference? I think it's just wood.
@Caliber8Tools
2 жыл бұрын
I would start with 80 grit, don’t press too hard when sanding. You can create dips in the surface that way. Then use a 150 grit then a 220.
With a really fine grit sandpaper, can the random orbital sander also be used as a finish sander?

I have a sheet sander…I am prepping ugly old golden oak cabinets for painting…will it work for what I am doing or should I get an orbital? Thanks for the explanation…great video.

Sheet sanders are better for getting in corners because of the square shaped pads. This is good for cabinets because of all the straight edges and corners inside.
Great video! Subscribed! :) Repainting our old doors. Will Sheet sander be enough or should i go for orbital ones? Just need to take off that old paint from the wood.
@Caliber8Tools

If your doors have recessed sections with corners, the right angled sheet sander pad can get into those corners better than a round orbital pad. If there are no corners go for the orbital. Have fun painting. Thank you.

What kind of sander would you recommend me to buy if I'm using it for my ceiling? I'm trying to remove my popcorn ceiling this summer and sand it before I repaint it.
@Caliber8Tools
2 жыл бұрын
Use a drywall knife or spatula to scrape off the popcorn until the surface is smooth then sand it. Or if you only use a sander to remove the popcorn, use an orbital sander. Start with a coarse grit paper to remove the bulk of the popcorn then use a finer grit as you go in.
Its been months but i hope you can read this... I just wanna ask which is better for sanding wood board and Plywood?
@Caliber8Tools
2 жыл бұрын
Both are good. Sheet sanders are great for getting in corners. Orbitals are good for large areas, it’s more versatile.
How is the sheet sander made for finish work but it's more likely to leave swirl marks?
@Caliber8Tools
2 жыл бұрын
All sanders leave swirls. If the swirl is very noticeable it could be something in between the sander and the wood, like dust or wood chips, worn out sand paper or sanding technique.
i'm planning to repaint my door which the wood starts to get rough, should i get sheet sanders for these job?
@Caliber8Tools

If the door is completely flat an orbital will do. If it has recesses with corners get a sheet sander for the corners.

Which one will be better for sanding curved area?
@Caliber8Tools
2 жыл бұрын
Depends on if it’s a concave curve(outward) in which case an orbital would do. If the curve is convex(inward) and smaller than the face of the orbital sander you may need another tool like a tailed sanding apprentice.
Both are needed if you're serious about wood!

@@rickferr1546 For the wood garage, start off with a more coarse sand paper like 80 grit then graduate to 150 grit and from that to 220. For the metal door, go really fine with 400 grit, for the tough spots drop down to about 150 grit. a variable speed orbital sander should work.
