    Ade is such an amp guru and legend - I love listening to him talk about products he built. I used to have a Rockerverb 100 for almost a decade. I just didn't like how mid saturated it was in the end, but man did it have some sick tones. I guess I ended up with something a little more versatile in the tone ranges, but that spongey Orange sound is something I'd love to have if I had the extra cash for one. The cabs are like tanks!

    Amazing work Ade!! Your comment about how to switch on and off the amp has got my thinking Im doing it all wrong. I have a single channel AD30 and was wondering what is the best way to switch that one on and off? I have alway powered it on in standby mode..left it a couple of minutes and then switched the standby to play. Powering it off I would switch it back to standby and leave it a minute before switching the power off. Is this the correct way or am I hammering my valves? Id appreciate the info as there is very little out there on my amp...seems like there are not many about...

    Yep, a Marshall 100w super lead sounded awful next to my AD1510(on full) the "popstar" wanted to buy it from me, I lent it to him and it disapeared for a year(EMI) then I got it back . It must have grated him cos he took a valve out thinking it would sabotage my efforts but no it still chugged along. I think the "Tone controls " are really volume controls. I may have to take a peek at the circuit again.

    That is the opposite of what I have always heard, RE: powering on. Wouldn't powering it on NOT in standby shock the rectifier tubes? I though the standby switch limited the power to the tubes and the rest of the circuit?

  • @TheSizzlingBadger

    @TheSizzlingBadger

    Жыл бұрын

    The tube rectifier takes time to start working so the power up is a soft start, no need to be in Standby. Switching from Standby to On can cause a larger initial current draw (Reservoir caps charge) and harm the rectifier (depends on the circuit though). Probably would have been better to not have a standby switch at all tbh, but guitarists seem to like them ;-)

    @@TheSizzlingBadger thanks for the explanation. In my brain the initial hit from power in would be worse (in a straight circuit) but I forgot about the other stuff in the path like capacitors. "With a tube-rectified amp, the best way to power this up is to make sure both switches switch to play. Bang it on, and let it ramp gradually. That way you don't shock the rectifier, you know. A-a-and when you power it down, that's when you want to switch it to Standby. And that lets the tubes come down to an intermediate temperature, before you cool 'em right off. That will increase your tube life-probably at least double. I've always done it, and it's served me well." That sounds backwards. Is he right?

  • @K707OR30

    Love this amp, but wish you guys had used better tubes. Mine was making some noise with no input, and if I tapped on the chassis it sounded like reverb tank springs jangling around but obviously there isn’t one. Two of the el84s were microphonic, one ridiculously so, and the ecc82 was insanely microphonic. All psvane tubes which are generally trash, with the exception of one 12ax7 being a JJ. Maybe this was UPS’ fault but kind of disappointing that I have to replace at least three tubes in a brand new amp, may just replace them all for good measure. May want to think about packing for the tubes or having them packed separately since they’re getting shipped around the world. But other than that, I love the amp itself. Just don’t get why you’d potentially risk the reputation of UK built/all tube at this price point by putting known trash tubes in it.

    They've been using cheaper tubes for years now. Shame they haven't sorted it yet. I've got one of these on the way and hoping it shows up okay.

    That is not problem with amp to run tubes very hotThe issue is that today tubes are low quality. Would be nice if tubes will be made again in UK or USA with quality of ol' days.

    We, and audio people are about the only ones that use them. I saw a company a year and a half ago that was soliciting for suggestions of what tubes they should make for guitar amps due to the tube shortage and since they already had the facilities (they make audio and turntable amplifiers that are tube driven), but the cheapest audio tube they make on the audio side is like 699.00 a pop. Their phono plug terminators are 75.00 a pair. So, thanks, but no thanks. I don't thnk we are going to see American manufactured tubes- there aren't enough bands and players in the US that would use them with enough regularity to make it even remotely profitable, or even to recoup the outlay to build a place.

    @@CedricSatterfield Tubbes are used for other music equipment and tube synthesizers as well. But even if it was only guitar amps what is the problem to make 1 factory which wil make high quality tubes in UK or USA?

    @@CedricSatterfield To make high quality amplifier factory should not be that alot differnt from high quality tube factory. More over i am pretty shure this is gold mine couse all high end guitar amplifier manufactors will be intresting in such high end tubes. And as i seid tubes are used not only in guitar amplifier but in alot of rest of music eqipment and also tube synthizers instruments. P.s. But anyway i am prety shure this idea will work like hot cakes how ever iff this idea will fail i hope they will not find me and panish me with huge kok in my s.

    @@GODenWordThere’s very few tube based synthesisers and are very niche pieces of equipment. Whilst tube equipment exists in pro audio, it’s yet again a much smaller market and it’s not held in the same esteem as it is with guitar amps.
