    I discussed it with some more experienced folks when I was building my smelting blueprints, and I decided to stop using pilers entirely. Apparently, they hit FPS quite significantly, but they also caused backup on my supply lines - no matter what I did, I was unable to fully saturate a belt with 30/s 4-stacked product. No matter how I laid out the conveyors, they always ended up carrying 5 to 10% less product than they can support, 10% being the more common productivity loss. This means backing up production facilities, which leads to needing more production facilities, which leads to FPS hits and larger saves, and so on and so forth. I was looking to make dense, fully proliferated builds (yes, I proliferate everything start to finish, because again - same amount of product from fewer facilities). Consequently, I ended up feeding single belts of output into multiple output ILS while the supply ILS provided 4-stacked resource. Overall, I'm happy with this approach, because it's less space occupied per product and I hit more FPS per production volume.

    You really are "the tutorial" :). Very neat, organized and well presented builds, thank you. I don't think anyone can surpass the cleanliness of these. What I would like to see your opinion and ideas on are why PLS and not ILS, and how to setup mid-late game logistics, e.g. smelting planet or not, etc.

    I think he's said before in other videos and his livestreams that he considers ILS straight up superior to PLS in every way (not hard to see why). But from a design and coolness factor, it is a nicer concept to have a bunch of local PLS workstations that transfer to a centralized ILS for offworld distribution. So it is both an added challenge and a nicer conceptual design, at the expense of efficiency and a lot of extra logistics to slow down your save file 😅

    My smelter blueprints are aimed at "early" game but with expansion worked in. Basically I have a section at the beginning with 20 or so smelters, a gap for the middle and an end column. This means that I can head to an array and simply copy and paste a section to grow the array and upgrade it as demands require, the end column making it easy to visualise where the next build can be placed down. Got into the habit when blueprint restrictions were tighter than they are now and found it works for me. Also saves having to arrive at a build from a specific direction to avoid it being made from the furthest point to the input/output early on when resources are low or slow.

    Great video as always, absolutely love the Masterclasses. I'd really like to see one that deep dives into overall logistics design between ILS, PLS, Fidget Spinners and optimal ways to integrated all of them into a "system design", akin to the Factorio Main Bus/Production Hub concepts. E.g. should I export ore to a smelting planet, what about using an ILS to bring in all of my smelted bars then distribute to PLS at various assembly sites (hub/spoke inter-planetary) or direct to per assembly ILS instances. How to integrate Fidget Spinners w/ the ILS/PLS distribution system for last mile, etc.

    I watched this video and it came along at a good time, as I was just laying down some smelting arrays of my own (the type 2 of this video). I discovered something important. I could not easily put 2 of them in the "temperate" band if I used ILS. PLS would fit fine. Also, I hadn't taken the care that Nilaus has in matching widths and lengths. If I want to have one blueprint that can go in any of 5 bands on one side of the equator (10 in total) I apparently need to use a PLS with them. This seems important information. Perhaps you are saving "why I use PLS" for another video? I look forward to hearing about how you do this.

    2 things, without Pilers and once the station and smelters are full, 5 of the smelters will never discharge at all which will mean you lose production, also if you don't mind a half full belt you can have another row of 2-1 smelters per station.

During my search I did find a module you could load that provided that functionality, but it sounds like it has been deprecated and potentially brought in as a part of the game now. Does anybody know how they do it? So far, I can only Shift and Left Click on an existing building to place down one copy of it. Thanks.

    Love this game, but the slow down you referenced once you start getting really big hampers it sooo much. In my original game I was producing 100k white cubes per minute, requiring over a million raw ore of each type…as a result each second in game was taking 5-6 seconds irl. It sucks because the game gets more and more enjoyable as you scale up bigger and bigger…unfortunately the game just can’t handle it.

    What are your thoughts on smelting in two steps e.g. having a separate smelting array that takes iron plates and makes steel?

  • @stevenape377

    @stevenape377

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm not Nilaus, so of course feel free to ignore me, but I'd say that as long as you're not proliferating, it creates unnecessary drone activity, costs more belts, and a more complex supply chain, so while it wouldn't be awful to separate it, it's still better not to. Of course that equation changes if you do want to proliferate; steel is more expensive than iron ingots, so it can be somewhat worth it. If you want that, you'd have to separate.

    I disagree that proliferation is unnecessary for things like smelting. It is true that 1 iron isn't worth a nanotube and some coal, but thats not the right ratio. Mk 3 proliferating iron ingot production gives 12 less ore required, at a cost of 2 coal, 2 spiniform, and 0.5 kimberlite. That is a good trade I feel, assuming you have an ocean planet somewhere.

  • @Nilaus

    consider the increased power, increased logistics and the fact that you can no longer fit 30 in this space then it becomes a really bad idea even if you feel the resources is a good trade off

  • @deredware9442

    @deredware9442

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Nilaus You no longer need to fit 30 to fill a belt, only 24 due to the productivity. I'm usually building processors and/or turbines on the same planet, so I already have proliferators there anyways. Power is a bit of a concern, but that's mostly free late game once you have suns and antimatter made with a big enough sphere. The real tradeoff I think is space. You get more out of the same footprint with proliferators. Though it doesn't exactly use up a whole 2 sectors.

    @@deredware9442 You also get some power savings back in the form of less smelters used, and thus also less sorters. It will not make up for the 100% increased usage for just one step but it means you don't actually use the full 100% extra to get the same amount of product. I guess you could also include the power saving from fewer trips to bring ore.

Unlike the Factorio Masterclasses, were you built the design during the video and explained everything while building. Here you mostly stand in the finished product and talk about it. There seems to be missing something contentwise. Maybe it's because DSP designes are so easy, but I still wanted to share my thoughts.

    The design on these is literally sorter in/sorter out, or smelter to smelter sorter for 2 step smelts, nothing complex to dive into. Factorio requires a lot more complex belt/pipe/train integration into a build. It's almost like a Factorio w/ isolated assembly locations w/ trains instead of a belt system, where the complexity of the train mechanics are solved by logistics ships.
