Hello sir I need questions base on ABO exam

Guys if it helps, the way I think about how to know what type of prism it is: PT PD is at 67 and Glasses were made at 60, so we know that is BI because the glasses came with a smaller PD than the one, they were supposed to have. Then I looked at my prescription in the eye that am I working on. If is a (+) plus lens, then the prism stays in the same direction BI. If is a (-) minus lens, then the prim is the opposite, in this case BO. Hope this helps! The videos are great and very helpful now that I am getting ready for my BOARDS and needed a refresher.

I'm not really sure how that approach is any easier/simpler than learning the rules and drawing things out - BUT - heck if it works for you keep doing it.

Thanks for the videos. Took the course. I’m proud to say I passed my ABO and NCLE. Which you also provided some NCLE vocab. In Washington we also take the practical through a ABO and NCLE and that’s what I’m taking now. Thanks for the information you provide. You are the reason I finally understand all the equations!!!

Can you please explain the OC base up or down ? How to determine base up or down? Is it plus or minus in the sphere? I usually get the calculations correct but not the base. I am self learning for the ABO/NCLE.

Had 1 question and thanks as always for the helpful videos! These examples were with binocular PD's. If it was an example where say a monocular PD was done, and upon inspection, the right PD was right on while the left wasn't....Do we just do the calculations for incorrect OS only or do the calculations with 0 decentracion?

I am in the process of drawing it out. How do I determine if the amounts cancel or compound? I'm familiar with placing it on the correct meridian but I do not know how to determine if it is bi bo etc?

In one of the videos, sorry I can't recall which one, I post the chart with the rules. You need the chart in front of you so you know the compound or cancel rules. As to the rest, practice, practice, practice... Draw it out and picture it. There is no other way. Sooner or later it will click... John

Why do we not need to divide the difference by 2 with an OC error?

Matt, Correct error is at 180, L power already provided at 180.

Why dd you add 5.5 BO prism with 5.5 BO Prism at the end? is it not just 3.4 BO prism Right eye and 2.1 BO Prism Left Eye making a total compound prism of 5.5 BO?

LameBoyDavid, Sorry, I missed your question. How you write the answer depends on the situation. Compounding you write the TOTAL amount as being in BOTH eyes as shown. Cancelling you write the AMOUNT as being in the eye or lens with the highest power.

hoereuh, Prism doesn't have a sign, only a base and a direction. Prism is based on a single prism not two prisms combined. We are only concerned with the image shift not a focal length or diverging/converging ray. John

Hi John, In the second example you never definitively indicate if the 0.1 error due to vertical misalignment is significant. You make a quick decision to hold the lab accountable, which is fine by me, but I would like to now if the 0.1 diopter error has any real impact on the customer's vision, perceived or otherwise. Perhaps the height error introduces other non power related problems. (Cosmetic appearance is the only thing that I can think of.) Thanks.

You provided that OC height for a reason. If the eye naturally seeks the lens OC (the place on the lens where no prismatic affect occurs) then they will naturally position their head to find that sweet spot. They may end up walking around with their head held high or looking down. Only matters because of the high lens powers. The two eyes will see things as being in the same place but that doesn't change the fact that the both eyes will see the object out of place from where it actually is. Wear them for a few hours and the brain will correct for it - most of the time. But wrong is wrong.

Hi. I had a question. At the end of the 2nd question. R -5.00 and left -6.50. Why did you add the two prism together? I would have thought it would have been. 1.5 prism in for the right and 1.95 prism in for the left? Or only if asked if how much prism has been created in each lens? And the 3.5 BIL and 3.5 BIL is what the doctor would write on the Rx ?

BI BI compounds or makes things much worse. So the amounts are added together. This is about what someone would experience when they put on a pair of glasses that was made WRONG. This would not be something you would do to determine or write a Rx. That would be done in the phoropter or maybe the lensmeter. John

I am currently doing a self taught program and can not thank you enough. In example #2, the pupil is in the top triangle in the drawing, but you call it base down, instead of up, is that because it is a plus lens? if not, why is it the opposite?

Much more on OpticianWorks.com. Since we are working with humans and human brains there is no 1:1 relationship between prism and how something is interpreted. 2D of prism can be measured on a lens but 2D of prism might be perceived completely different person to person. John

So was example #2 7.00 diopters of total prism or was total prism 3.5?

In example # 2, shouldn't we divide the 4 by 2 since there is 2 eyes like example #1? Or with base up and down that doesnt apply? Did I miss a rule?

Also in example # 1 you said since the patient is looking through the base in section it was base in etc, but in example #2 it looks like he is looking through the base up section, but its written as base down. David, Your questions tell me you get it but want a little reassurance? ;-) Yes, both your questions are related to the fact that this error is in the 90th not the 0-180th meridian. Each lens OC is sitting 4mm lower than we wanted it. Each lens OC is sitting 4mm below where the wearer is actually looking through the glasses. Look at the drawing at 11:37 in the video. The line between the two triangles (prisms) IS THE lens OC. Where is the base of that prism? Down or under the pupil. They have to be looking through BD prism. Don't over-think it - look only at that one "triangle" that the pupil is sitting within. Heck, you could erase the bottom triangle entirely if it helps. For 90 errors better to think of it that way than in relationship to the nose maybe? WYSIWYG: What-you-see-is-what-you-get 4mm each eye as shown. No need to divide for any reason. This all might make more sense when you start to do some finishing layout work. John

The first example is for a PD error so we needed to figure out decentration per eye. The 2nd example is an OC error and you are provided with the amount of error. OC requested and OC received. It will click keep at it....

Power determined by axis position. Power in oblique meridian formula, % rule, flat transposition. Not by general power of the lens.

In Example #3, you added the power in the right eye (9.75), but didn't in the left eye. What am I missing? Thanks for these videos by the way. Very helpful!

Kari, I don't add 9.75 to anything. I multiply it times the error to get my prism amount for that eye. Please watch all 3 examples a few more times and it should "click." Adding or subtracting only comes when you decide if it is a compound or cancel situation. John

Thank you! I just started watching example three again, and realized that because you have to get the power along the 180, you have to flat transposition it. I knew I was missing something. I'm just learning, so I find that if I re-watch the videos, it really helps!

The higher the value of p the more the object being viewed through the prism will shift position towards the apex. The higher the value of p the thicker the prism wedge will be. Is that what you are after? John

One more thing sometimes if we don't find axis on lens when putting axis with lensometer then we apply at the prism how it will right and correct for the lens

@@pankajgarg7737 Sorry but I think we are losing a little in language here. No, determining a prism amount doesn't really tell you much about the human error. Prescribing prism or figuring out how much someone needs and in what direction is a matter of experience and some trial and error. If you had wanted prism in a lens with sphere power then you would be reading its position using the prism chart. Did you mean millimeters instead of centimeters? OC will move in mm, hopefully, if it’s cm then there’s no need for a formula since it’s obvious the job will be horribly off

NO! The formula is worked in centimeters. We work in millimeters which is why you divide by 10. I meant centimeters. I think I mention that about 10X in the videos? John

Jennifer, Watch the video again and pay close attention to the part where I talk about Compounding and Cancelling. Depending on the base direction of the prism created you may add the two results together or you may subtract them.

@@LaramyKOptical What I've done with some of my videos, is I've slightly edited the auto generated English KZread subtitles to my liking. Then I download the .srt subtitle file. Then I upload the .srt file to the Google Translator toolkit, and I've converted it into Spanish and other languages. Then I upload those translated subtitles to KZread as well. The translated subtitles aren't translated by a human, but it's better than nothing. KZread also gives the ability for titles and descriptions to appear based on people's language settings, so I sometimes take advantage of doing that as well. (This means you can submit different titles and descriptions in different languages for one video. I use Google Translate to do this). Here's some more info about the Google Translator Toolkit that you might find helpful: www.ghacks.net/2015/03/16/translate-subtitles-quickly-with-googles-translator-toolkit/ Also, if you wanted another human to do the captioning of your English subtitles, you could use a service called www.Rev.com. Additionally, juan carlos Cordero, as long as subtitles are a least auto-generated, you can open up the transcript of the video on a laptop or desktop and then you can copy and paste the English words into Google Translate to get the Spanish meaning of them.

@@LaramyKOpticalThis is one more tip that might be useful: if you use the Google translator toolkit to do subtitles in languages outside of Spanish, I would first test out the efficiency of Google Translate for the other language(s) you want to use it for. How I do this is I copy and paste the English title of my video into Google translate into another language; let's say that language is Hindi. Then I will use Google Translate to translate that Hindi title back into English. If the title comes out pretty much like what I wrote in English, then I have more confidence that Google Translate is helpful. The more Google translate is used for a language, the more useful it is. I didn't find that Somali, for example, was that good with Google Translate.

I will have to say that the biggest downfall to these videos is that they are in no order. You stated that if we have not watched the prior six videos not to watch this one. How in the world is anybody supposed to know what prior six videos you were talking about considering they are not in order? It's very confusing. You are an excellent teacher but I feel like I am in the Twilight zone trying to follow you because I cannot find what video is supposed to be before this one or after this one or if I'm even watching them in the appropriate order. I've actually went on to other websites to try to find something that can help me because this is really really confusing me and I do not need to fail the ABO. I wish someone could straighten this out to where people could watch these videos in the order that they need to.
