Have you heard of "metamaterials"? These sophisticated materials have nano-scale patterns on their surfaces that allow us to control light.
We at NIMS have developed a novel gas sensor that incorporates a metamaterial with a special pattern on its surface capable of emitting and absorbing infrared light of a desired wavelength.
How does it work? What can we use it for? Watch this video and find out!

    On the contrary, I loved the music and felt it worked very well. Some people just don't have such a fine appreciation of music to understand it. Those who can do physics and music (e.g. Brian May) are double smart!

    It is called a surface plasmonic resonator. You can tune to any wavelength you want, assuming that you structure the gold or other metal over the insulator correctly. If you want to get into the extremely weird, you can put the pattern over nonlinear optical materials as the insulator layer. This allows very efficient conversion to difficult to reach bands of light and even into terahertz or microwave regions. For example a direct light to microwave or microwave to light emitter. 🤔 Also the music was totally unnecessary in this video, it made it difficult to hear the scientist discussion of it. 😢

    Correct me if I'm wrong, please. That quantum well mentioned, it's the same principle of CCD cameras right? The charge particle will build up underneath them "drive" in a specific way to the outside to be amplified... I saw this explanation in a Asianometry vídeo yesterday and think about this similarities

    @christopherleubner6633 - Since you are evidently familiar with this area, can I ask you to comment further? It looks like these effects *do not* require laser light input, since there was a response from human body heat on one of the sensors. Also, a special emitter was shown having the twin-tuned output when merely heated. But I still have important questions . . . Is it _always, mostly, or generally_ true that these effects do no have to start out with coherent radiation? Is the emissivity _within the tuned bands_ *higher than unity?* Should I assume that the likely tradeoff is emissivity being much lower than normal blackbody _outside the tuned bands?_ Thank you.

Being an amateur radio operator I was thinking "Optical antennas: sophisticated infrared light manipulation technology (2020/11/04)" Was makin antennas out of an emitting wave length VIA a device. 4:32 that looks like a cryo dewer. So the metamaterial detector likely requires cryo cooling. The other sensor they showcased here is called a MCT (mercury cadmium telluride) detector, which is a quantum type detector sensitive to far infrared wavelengths when cryo cooled. The hottest sensor right now however, seems to be microbolometers, which requires no cryo cooling but has way less sensitivity.

    does the Infrared light source work, in absolutely Infrared dark conditions because I am curious about how much is coming from the device and how much is guided reflection. are the rectangles 3.95um by 4.26um? or does the wave come from the channel between the rectangles. the picture at 2:00 looks like the east west channel size could be shorter then north south channel but the picture at 2:45 the look about the same size. at 3:45 does connector of the squares match the frequency shape dimensions so it resonates with that frequency. why does the square connectors not alternate from square to square to better match the wave form or is it impossible to etch in such a way.

    They are technically antennas that cause an effect called surface plasmonic resonance so they are likely 1/4 or 1/2 wave. A quarter wave would allow a phased array to be formed at the desired frequency. Also changing the shape would change the polarization, for example if you made them as circles you would get left or right rotating polarized light instead of linear polarized light.

    Don't Antennas need oscillating signal input to output anything at all? Same goes for receiving antenna, the output will be AC with frequency will into terahertz, how did he rectify it?

  • @dougaltolan3017

    @dougaltolan3017

    The radiators are more accurately called resonators, they don't need specific excitement, they just "ring" at the desired wavelength. The receiver(s) are quantum wells. Again the resonance from the physical dimensions make them more sensitive to the desired wavelength. Once the resonance is strong enough, electrons are pushed out of the well. Since it's only electrons that are used out, the signal is inherently DC. At least thats what I glean between the 🎸🎶

    These could be made surprisingly cheaply. While gold was used it was not much, but it is also possible to use many different metals for the antenna elements. Yup they are literally tiny antennas tuned for light.

It is amazing that people complain about anything they can they can’t really see how funny it is to see those, great scientist whether they be Japanese or whatever making breakthroughs and discoveries and complain about the music, they’re listening to hopefully that Japanese man was playing air guitar as he was listening to rock music reaching towards the stars 😜👏🏻
