Opposite-side Castling in the QGD | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. 1088
Ойындар
In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 10+5 game against a player rated 1088 on Chess.com. Black (another viewer!) chooses a savvy move order in the Queen's Gambit Declined (1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 Be7 and a quick ...Bf5), but gives me a bit of a jumpstart on a kingside attack by means of 9.h4, threatening to trap the bishop. Though I castle queenside with the intent to attack on the kingside, the battle soon shifts to the center.

Hey John, kamooox here! This was a bit of a surreal experience as I was watching some of your videos earlier today, and I definitely didn't expect to randomly be part of one. It might have been ambitious to try to complicate the game against someone who's much higher rated, but I felt I needed to make a move like c5 to look for counter play since I was being pressed hard on the king side. Hopefully this can be instructive for the other viewers around my skill level, I'd say John hit it on the head when he mentioned I should've had a more concrete plan after dxc5 since I missed Qb5 after Nb4. Either way, thanks again for the game, this is a great motivation to keep improving :)

Hey man, thanks for the game and comments!! Agreed, I feel you might the right call in seeking counterplay on the queenside, even though the timing was a little off. I see you just ripped off several wins to get to 1100 - congrats! Thanks again for sharing your thoughts here.

Got home from a 12-hour day at work and needed a way to unwind. Figured I’d settle for an old Rating Ladder video until I found this in my subscription feed. Great to have you back, John!
Opponent played way above their rating IMO. Thanks for another good video!

Kudos to my fellow Canadian. You played a real good game against a strong IM. Well done!
John, you without a doubt, provide the most instructional chess content on KZread. No one else comes close to being able to break down the thought processes one should keep in mind while playing. Thanks for all your videos mate.

Cheers, John - thanks a lot!
Kudos to kamooox. I've seen many higher rated players make 1/10th of the amount of sense in their games. Underrated IMO. And thanks for another standard video JB!
So happy you’re back posting regularly, I absolutely love your content. Instructive, entertaining, and the way you explain your thought process and do your commentary is awesome. Makes my day every time you post!
Shout out to the Analysis posse! The nice thing about this series is that, unlike all the 'speedruns', you're always playing as yourself - it's never 'smurfing' and you never ever show any disrespect to your opponents' play. Very classy.
Hey John, just wanted to say how much I appreciate your calm and respectful style of playing. It's a deep and thoughtful chess, just the way I like it. Also it's a rare thing nowadays, cause everybody mostly into blitz. But with this fast pace of life, full of the stress and tension, I don't really feel that I like that sort of hassle transferring on the chessboard. That's also probably what makes some GMs so nervous and frustrated))Which,I think,is not truly the way chess should be. Anyway, actually was going to leave a comment for the sake of it, big love from Russia)
Thanks for posting back on KZread and doinging standard games it give me chance to work out what the hells going on lol. My game has improved 10 fold since watching your vids

Returning regular uploads from you are such a gift. Thanks a lot John. :)
Definitely the best, most instructional chess content on KZread. So happy to have you back posting regularly!
These videos are so instructive in helping me dissect my games afterward and identify where I went wrong. Everyone correctly beats to death that you need to review your games, but if you don’t know where to look it’s much less productive.
I'm not even good at chess but you're one of my favorite streamers to watch. Countless hours I spend here just for the pure quality of your content! Thanks John!
I really appreciate your dedication to playing solid chess in these videos. Even when they're trying to be educational, I think it can be hard for high-rated players to get distracted by speculative or flashy moves - which are fun to see, of course, but much much harder for the rest of us to emulate.
your videos are always so comforting
Keep the long games coming! Thanks for getting in the groove of posting on a regular basis.
Lol so funny that everyone you play is a fan! The explanations on these games are really instrucive and helpful, thanks for the amazing work!!
Joooooohn so many vids in a row let’s go!!! So glad to see you back on the grind, thank you so much!
Interesting comments about always being on the lookout for any way your opponent can refute your last move. I've found that solving puzzles has really helped with this aspect. It's incredible how many times you play a move in a puzzle, and the computer plays a completely unexpected reply - that really forces you to look at EVERY possibility in future puzzles, including seemingly crazy sacrifices.
I love how a lot of these videos are tailored to be understandable to your opponent's rating level. Makes improving much easier when you can follow the criticism. BTW, I thought kamooox played well. No blunders until the game started getting tactical- it's too bad it wasn't 20 minutes a side, the game would have been interesting.
I'm loving these longer-format videos! Keep it up :)
Good stuff. thanks for the content. You are on my Mount Rushmore of chess KZreadrs lol -- you, naroditsky, eric rosen, agadmator, and a few others. I am now 1700 rapid on lichess after about 2 years of playing, and your fundamentals series was a big part of that. I hope to play some real tournaments soon. I thank you for the great free content, I would not have such a love for this game if it weren't for creators like you. Keep it up!
Loving the uploads recently! I have been watching your standard videos bit by bit for the last year and your commentary is always amazing! Thanks for everything!
Really love you posting content again! Getting me back into chess. Thanks!
Your instructional videos are great!! Thank you John 😊
Dang it, John. I was all ready to just take it easy and play game after game of mindless low-level 2|1, and now your frequent uploads have me itching to get back on the rapid grind! 😅

babe wake up john just posted another video
Well played, Mr 1088. Good video
Qb3 is my go to move when black brings the bishop out early. Usually they defend with b6, but often they miss b7 hanging and I swipe the pawn. Usually Rb8 is played next as a reflex. It was interesting to see in your analysis black’s most dangerous move is Nb4. I will have to watch out for that!

Nice game, I really like the 10+5 time control. Classical is better for improving of course, but I think this time is a good mix of giving time to think but still needing to make decisions quickly

before you moved rook H3 i kept hoping black would move knight G4 and threaten a fork to maybe force the queen back to defend. im 680 so i dunno if that pans out.
