    Having had to study the mathematical notation he invented, I can't say I'm particularly surprised. I wouldn't be surprised at any of his moves, though I would also assume that Einstein studied chess for longer, and probably did play. You know who would kick all of their ass at chess out of the physicists of that day? John von Neumann. If von Neumann had studied chess instead of mathematics, he'd probably be the greatest of all time by a wide margin.

    Hi Gotham, at 1:21 you state that "There are more chess positions possible [...] than there are atoms in the universe" which is unfortunately incorrect. There are more chess games possible than atoms in the universe, but the number of possible legal chess positions is closer to the number of atoms on earth (specifically the current lowest upper bound is about 10^48)

    just a small note: there are more possible games than atoms in the universe, not positions. It is estimated that there are more than 10^80 atoms. As a simple estimation of the positions, one can calculate with 64 squares, which can take one of 13 states (empty, K, k, Q, q, R, r, ...). That gives you 13^64 different positions, or about 10^71. Obviously, this includes numerous incorrect positions; in fact, there are probably only 10^44ish positions. A popular estimate for the number of games is 10^120

    quick fact ceck : How many chess positions are possible? It is estimated there are between 10^111 and 10^123 positions (including illegal moves) in Chess. (If you rule out illegal moves that number drops dramatically to 10^40 moves. it is estimated that there may be 10^78 to 10^82 atoms in the known universe. so unless you count illegal moves, the universe is still winning. doesnt change what you're trying to say though, theres a crazy amount of possible chess positions

    As a linguist, there was a time where we pronounced the “k” in “knight”. That’s why it’s there. English does what’s convenient though, so the sound got dropped but the letter stayed.

    Would you be interested in doing a vid on the games of Marcel Duchamp? He's most notably the conceptual artist who made Fountain, the readymade sculpture that's just a urinal on a plinth. But he was also an accomplished amateur chess player. He was a French delegate to FIDE, he wrote a book on endgame theory, and he played the US Champion Frank Marshall to a draw in 1930.

    Sadly this game almost certainly did not happen, but its fun to think about and interesting match. If curious, this is the best info i could find which was from an article by Edward Winter. “Our fifth ‘Chess Mysteries’ article noted that the Dictionnaire des échecs by François Le Lionnais and Ernst Maget (Paris, 1967) reproduced from Freude am Schach by Gerhard Henschel (Gütersloh, 1959) a game purportedly won by Stalin, and that the Dictionnaire expressed some doubt about its authenticity. Strange to say, exactly the same occurred regarding a game attributed to Einstein... On pages 51-54 of his book Henschel presented the following game ‘which Albert Einstein played against the American nuclear physicist Oppenheimer’: 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 b5 5 Bb3 Nf6 6 O-O Nxe4 7 Re1 d5 8 a4 b4 9 d3 Nc5 10 Nxe5 Ne7 11 Qf3 f6 12 Qh5+ g6 13 Nxg6 hxg6 14 Qxh8 Nxb3 15 cxb3 Qd6 16 Bh6 Kd7 17 Bxf8 Bb7 18 Qg7 Re8 19 Nd2 c5 20 Rad1 a5 21 Nc4 dxc4 22 dxc4 Qxd1 23 Rxd1+ Kc8 24 Bxe7 Resigns. No date or venue was given by Henschel, and the note of caution in the Dictionnaire was ignored by subsequent writers. Page 415 of Şah Cartea de Aur by Constantin Ştefaniu (Bucharest, 1982) described it as a ‘game of historic value’ played in the United States in 1940. Pages 157-160 of El maravilloso mundo del ajedrez by Emilio Carrillo Alonso (Mexico City, 2002) gave both the Stalin game and the Einstein one, heading each of them ‘Moscow, 1926’. Elsewhere (e.g. passim and ad nauseam on the Internet) the date of the Einstein game is recorded as 1933, and the venue as Princeton. A. Soltis gave the game on page 372 of the July 1979 Chess Life & Review, introduced with a claim (devoid of any corroboration) that ‘it was apparently played in the late 1940s when Hans Albert Einstein, son of the Einstein, and Robert Oppenheimer were both on the faculty of the University of California at Berkeley’. What, then, is the truth about the ‘Einstein game’? More specifically, did Henschel’s 1959 book mark its first appearance in print?”

    None of this actually proves the game almost certainly did not happen. The text does not even suggest this. The text, at worst, suggests the game was cited poorly by the original sources who published it, and subsequent writers ignored the fact. This can happen just as easily with a game that happened.

  • @fintan9218

    @fintan9218

    @@angelmendez-rivera351 it wasn’t just “cited poorly” the original source of the game “expressed some doubt about its authenticity”. Which was ignored in all later mentions of it, with various details changed at a whim. I spent some time looking into this and was mislead by tons of misinformation, that article is by far the best summary with sources.

    No. Checkmating 10 000 opponents is not as significant if the quality of play of the opponents is significantly lower. Magnus Carlsen has the record he has against people who, on their own right, are far better than almost any player of the 20th century, with few exceptions. This is what makes Carlsen such a great player.
