Oppenheimer served as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory, overseeing the successful development of nuclear weapons. After the war, he became the director of the Institute for Advanced Study and advocated for international control of nuclear power to prevent proliferation and an arms race. However, due to his past associations with the Communist Party USA and his opposition to the hydrogen bomb, his security clearance was revoked during the Second Red Scare in 1954. Despite this setback, Oppenheimer continued to work in physics and received the Enrico Fermi Award in 1963.
