Opinel No 8 Folding Knife Review. Un Product Film de Jean Luc Godard

One of the most iconic folding pocket knives of all time is the Opinel no 8. This review of the classic French blade features inspirations from the French New Wave film style (like Godard’s Breathless)- designed to annoy people who don’t know what that is. Or enrage people who hate black and white French films, with people tryung to be cool. I compare the Opinel to other favorite pocket knives including the Spyderco Para Military 2, the Douk Douk, and the Higo no kami. The Opinel no. 8 can be purchased in a carbon steel variant or a Sandvik stainless steel variety. It also features a locking mechanism called a Viroblock, and a really nice Beech Wood handle. This knife can be purchased in multiple sizes, but I chose the 8 because of it’s useful 3 inch plus size blade:
Stainless Steel Opinel no. 8: amzn.to/2B9A0hi
Carbon Steel Opinel 8: amzn.to/2Basanu
Carbon Steel with Sheath: amzn.to/2B8P8LF
I also used some of KZread’s free music in the video:

Most of the knife "reviews" I see on KZread these days are just sales pitches. Your videos are honest, refreshing, and entertaining. Hell, I didn't give a shit what you thought about an Opinel, but I still watched this video. Very well done. Your work is appreciated.

I use these videos as an excuse to talk about other things, make jokes, and poke fun about the stuff we're interested in. But I also try to include enough info in the reviews that a person can make an educated guess about ergonomics, aesthetics, use and quality and if it works for them.

My no.7 and no.9 are two of my favorites and most complimented knives. They make excellent dinner knives because restaurant cutlery is typically shit. The Boker arbolito belt sheath fits the 7 well and I believe I can squeeze the 8 in. I'm sure if you sand down and reshape/slim the handle on 8 it would fit nicely.

You laugh, but Opinel actually makes a version with a foot-long blade. It's literally a folding "pocket sword". The locking ring makes it decently strong. Skallagrim did a review of it cutting tatami mats and stuff. It's comically humongous, but still cuts like a laser. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoCfxphqocjdZco.html

You should have no trouble building a shelter with an Opinel, I did it. The tip is more likely to snap off than bend. The Douk Douk has pretty soft steel, the Opinel is a much better knife.

thats how my Opinel looks like. it was enclosed in a package of Fein blades for multitool. cause thats what you really need when you need a knife. anyway the handle was painted Orange. After a while in my toolbox it looked like trump: a faded Orange pointless tool , only difference, the Opinel was still sharp.

I would never want to fight with one, but one looks real cool pulling one out for a social event to eat fine cheese. Opinel are classy. I think i will go buy one from your link right now. There are many art shows and picnics in my near future. Plus, I just subscribed due to the fun nature of your productions. Thumbs up.

I have one of these in carbon steel. Bought last year in Chatellerault, France. Wickedly sharp as bought, very nice slicer. The carbon steel does mark tremendously quickly, so take the sandvik if you prefer your knife in "silver" colour. The carbon model quickly sharpens on a regular kitchen steel though. I expect the stainless would also, but have but tried.

Advanced Knife Bro cutting oranges and grapefruit will give a nice patina in short order. Just wipe the blade off and let nature take its course. I used a cold blue gun touch up pen on my No.8. Gave a rich black color, although a little streaky. Not food friendly. Needs to be oiled afterwards. Dipping it in a bottle of cold bluing should give a nice effect.

Got to be the stainless version with olive wood handle, thats a very tasty picknicker. They still got the most useful blade shape when you actually use them.

I use mine even at home to cut thin delicate slices of meats and cheeses, it's the best picknick knife ever. Plus, the unique shape of the tip is so very handy.

Great review dude! Good to see the classics in with the campground commando knives. Maybe one day I can be a tactical forest ninja! You ever use svord peasants? I haven't tried them yet but they look like they'd be fun like the opinel.

You're such a cool dude! Had the Opinel 8 in both carbon and inox, and I'll take the inox when on the road, just easier to keep clean when cutting citrus fruits. Don't like the funny taste carbon steel leaves. Also, I modified the blade to a drop point. It's now one of my favorite all around use knives. Keep up the cool reviews.

Excuse me, I take my knife reviews akin to Seven Samurai, 3 hours long, and complete masterpieces! You missed your chance with the Higo no Kami, but I'm sure that making a three-hour video for that would have been torturous. Great job as always, and way to make use of that film (?) degree!

I have an Opinel (not sure what number its but it must be an 8 as it looks about right) i got it when i was 13 and ive abused it. What you said about the tip is true mine snapped off ages ago but im looking to buy a new one at some point. But from what i remmber it was a good knife.

Can confirm that the Opinel No. 13. AKA probably the most ridiculously oversized folder you've ever seen, can baton lot of wood decently well. It has a foot-long blade.

I blued my Opinel blade, to avoid corrosion, and sanded the rear top of the knife off, to create a cool, rounded profile, then stained the handle. Che Chic, Monsieur.

7:00 Collector's Knives makes leather slips with a pocket clip but they are sized for Great Eastern Cutlery knives. I doubt even the largest would hold a smaller Opinel.
