This video shows animated cartoons demonstrating the difference between a tropia and a phoria. We go over the cover-uncover test and the cross-cover test. This segment was extracted from the Pediatric Ophthalmology lecture from OphthoBook.com

I m consultant pediatrician, I watch the videos and like it so much, your teaching technique with animations is very effective
Such a crisp and concise video simplifying the concept of tropias and phorias! Thank you Tim!
Great! Really helps me understanding my exam materials. Thanks!
Exemplary teaching style,love it❤️
Simple and Great Video. Thanks.
Terimakasih telah berbagi ilmu, sangat bermanfaat, terutama bagi tenaga ahli refraksionis...
Great video. It's just what I was looking for. Thank you, sir.
Best video ever. Thank you heaps. Hope you would give us more lectures. Waiting for them online. :)
Well done! Accessible and informative! Thanks.
Beautiful! Thank you so much Sir
great video - the best video for learning cover test.thanks
These are VERY GOOD VIDEOS. The words "tropia" and "phoria" need to be clearly understood by the "Layman". Thanks, Otis
Definitions: Tropia and Phoria not quite correct. From medlineplus Main Entry: tro·pia: deviation of an eye from the normal position with respect to the line of vision when the eyes are open Main Entry: pho·ria: any of various tendencies of the lines of vision to deviate from the normal when binocular fusion of the retinal images is prevented Note: Tropias can be intermittent as in intermittent exotropia. They do not always have to be present

Thanks so much. That's why Maddox rods and cross eye test measure phorias.
Oh wow! This was REALLY HELPFUL! Thank you!!! I really really wish you all the best, you have no idea (i think you do though, since you made such an awesome video) how much you helped me to better undertand this! Thank you
probably best on KZread
This was really good! Thankyou

Hi there one thing I didn’t understand if problem with left eye and right eye is perfect then why the prism test in front of right eye should be not in front of left eye?? May b I am stupid but please help me I have a squint in my right eye getting double vision right eye turns out so my left eye is perfect no problem in vision and no squint but optician made glasses and also put prism for left eye I told her when I wear glasses the object is turning out in my perfect left eye. Really confused lol she said we have to divide prism for both eye but i am losing object from real position it’s annoying me I watched ur video very informative and easily to understand please guide me really appreciate for you reply
great, thank you very informative
Best video on this topic
Can you tell what are alternating tropia, unilateral tropia, and intermittent tropia? Thank you!
great video. Thank you
the apex of the prism should point in the direstion of the squint if i am not wrong
This animation is hilarious. I love it.
you are my favorite eye doctor / teacher
how do we know which eye to be given prism ,in case of Phoria?
Really a great videov
Excellent thank you so much! God bless!
eso means in exo means out so they see if its eso or exo if they eye turn in or out
Terimakasih ilmunya...
@DrJam0073 The cause of ocular misalignment must be determined 1st, but diplopia is rarely caused by "treatable" neuro problems. Most double vision is from aging decompensation, or untreatable strokes that you have to wait to see if the cranial nerve will repair itself Prism and surgery are not a "fix" but a way to keep our patient from suffering from double vision. In children, you need to fix eye alignment quickly (even surgery) or they will develop permanent vision loss from amblyopia .

My father was blind in one eye as a result of misaligned eyes that were not treated properly when he was a child. When I was five years old I was playing with my toy bow and arrow and accidentally shot him in his good eye. Luckily, no permanent damage.
How we can lower the exodrift left after the R&R surgery for IXT? Are the exercises ok?
Thank you very much :)
Excellent
thanks, that was helpful.
thank you very much
thanks Tim
Thanks!!!
very useful;...very thanx..........
The tropias are not always constant, since it happens with the intermittent tropias.
Nice information I like it
it is excellent learning
GRACIAS !!!
Very good sir
That was awesome
very, very helpful. Thanks!
thankyou so muchhh........ very very helpful ^^

The prism should be placed in front of the deviating eye to obtain the full measure of the deviation.

+Rooker11111 - of course not. The video shows the left eye deviating. In left exotropia the prism should be rotated so that it will be base in - in front of the left eye ( not the right eye). When the correct amount of prism is placed in front of the left eye then the light deviated by the prism will coincide with the visual axis of the left deviating eye giving the amount of deviation.

Rooker11111 Perhaps I misunderstood you or something, but to my understanding... "Outward exotropia = base-out prism." (your words). Does that mean in your words, that you would correct an Exo with base OUT? Pls just confirm or explain, might by the lack of english skill that makes me simply not understand you.

thank
How expensive these prisms are?
Thank you Dr. Tim You are the pest I'm waiting every video you post it
PErfect!
Very informative, my optomologist used these crystal rocks to measure my eyes, and he said I was 20/25
Please do a tutorial on evaluating and correcting diplopia with prism...
Thank u soooo much❤🙌🙌

hi tim my name's paul i'm 39. i had a surgery in 2012 for a exotropia on the left eye. the surgeon left me with a consecutive esotropia due to a overcorrection of the esotropia. i wanted to fix it but surgeon told me my brain doesnt fuse images correctly and the strabismus became so minimal no surgeon wants to operate. Thing is it still shows specially when im nervous or tired and its more noticeable close than far. Medicinal glasses make the strabismus show more. Without glasses is better, but its still there. Is there anything i can do?

sorry i wanted to say overcorrection of the exotropia
Great video. Subscribing.
so you are saying that brain surgery is less invasive than eye surgery?
@anti_fascist

Mr Ming Man clearly not. They just said that eye surgery is difficult. Where did "invasive" come from lol?
20 diopters? thats crazy
Thanks
rectus muscle of which eye is lengthened or shortened DR. TIMOTHY ROOT? is it like the lengthening is done on the misaligning eye otherwise shortening on the normal side?
i know this video is old but. When you want to find how big the phoria is, by using corecting prisms, you really need the prism bar. The patients fusion has to be removed at all times, while you increase the prisms with the bar by using the alternating covertest at the same time.
Base In for exo deviations and base out for eso deviations
direction of prism base: INN for exoforia OUT for esoforia
