    Nice review!! i just love the looks of the watch. 1) the case shape, dia, thickness are excellent. 2) Tear drop lugs, oh i love them so much, gives it a vintage feel. 3) I love the fact that this model can be got with a Salmon dial. Would have loved it even more if it had raised roman numerals in the dial. I want to get the Ophion velos in salmon dial at a good price. If you happen to know any online shop, do let me know.

    The salmon is great and I got a lovely blue alligator strap upgrade that was made for my skinny wrist.The hammered movement was to prevent dust on the old pocket watches.

    I've been admiring this specific watch for years. It may have had different hands back then. So glad to see someone finally review this watch. Ophion is a sleeper company; they only make two models the last I checked. But, man, the quality is unbeatable for the price range. I'm glad to see this watch on camera though. I just couldn't wear this color. The disappearing numerals and hands would drive me crazy! I think the white dial/ blued hands make the better, more practical choice. Plus, I think it would look wowzers with that white rubber strap of yours. Thanks for going off the beaten path and reviewing watch brands that don't get enough love but should be recognized as equal to or better than the household names.

    It really is a lovely watch and nice to see brands doing something a little different but not for mind boggling money. I do think the blued on white version would be better overall but from some pics I’ve seen they have the same go very black straight on “issue” that I had witb this one. No watch is perfect though.

    wow great review, well balanced, comprehensive... was looking for feedbacks on Ophion and ended up subscribing. I agree with your points and think that the silver dial with the blues markers is a better option in that configuration. I don't like the hands though, I prefer the pontife hands of the previous version but still might press on the trigger.... Well done, please continue posting your videos👍

    Thanks, really appreciate you watching! I felt the same way about the hands at first. I preferred the pontiff hands but after owning the velos, the arrow really grows on you and it’s beautifully sculpted.

    I know most of us are lucky enough to get little previews of these watches on Instagram, but I have to say you have one of the only channels that regularly feature things we would never get to see online otherwise, so I'm sure we all thank you for that. I know I actually found your channel when I was looking everywhere to see something on the Grand Seiko 9F with the black dial. Seems like ages ago. i think the lighting was yellow that day! Anyway...so yeah...What were they thinking with that obvious design choice to make the numerals and hands basically disappear when you are "using" the watch? I mean, they had to notice it. Nevertheless what a beautiful and bold design and so elegant. The numerals are utterly gorgeous ( when visible) and the dial...just so great to see horology being taken seriously by them. Teardrop lugs...definitely something that might not be at the top of my list but again, you have to give them kudos for being different and evoking another age without being in any way derivative. Great review...now buy a Fears so I can buy it from you when you tire of it. Cheers!

    Greatly appreciated Michael, and your right the light way yellow that day haha. The design is definitely refreshing. Not another diver or explorer type of watch. I’ve actually been thinking of buying the fears next so don’t tempt me more haha. Now 100% convinced I’d keep it but might be cool to own for a bit. I’ll let you know if it happens!

    Late to the party, but still wanna add something - as an owner of the Ophion Velos in salmon colour, I think the salmon colour pretty much fixes all your cons of the watch. You should really try it if you ever get the chance.

    Unfortunately not a huge fan of salmon, more of a go pink or go home kind of mentality. Would be really fun to see a pink dial version. Personally don’t think I’d revisit ophion unless they made their cases a little smaller, I don’t mind how it fits but it would be infinitely classier a smidge smaller

    What a beautiful watch. The design language for me really is up there with the best of the best of horology. But the dial finish unfortunately isn't what I've expected.

    I would politely disagree as far as the movement finishing. It is historically accurate to the era it's trying to portray, basically the very start of watchmaking. It might initially look odd but I really respect it as an artistic decision/historical nod. The parts intentionally left unfinished, apart from slightly cleaning machining marks, are likewise like very historic pocket watches. You mentioned the case shape feels high end - that's true partly because Voutilainen makes them, partly since teardrop lugs must be made separately welded onto the case. To my knowledge they cannot be built within the same process, or at least no such machine has ever existed. 5 days' power reserve is also really out there for the price point. Usually that's above 10-15 thousand dollars. Definitely a watch geek's watch.

  • @theknightswatch

    @theknightswatch

    Very fair point in the movement. Obviously being young I don’t know anywhere near everything about watches and their history. I mostly look at things from a modern viewpoint and just too my taste, it seems a little out of place. Undoubtedly a watch geeks watch. Will not even consider this brand unless you have both feet firmly planted in the hobby.

    That's due to the highly polished numerals and hands. But I think it gives this watch a very destinctive look, and I think it highly depends on your surroundings in terms of light sources. Better than a plain and always the same looking dail maybe.

    I agree it was very slightly better outside but even then the numerals didn’t shine when you looked at it directly. I ultimately sold it because I didn’t want to have to angle my watch for it to look it’s best.

    Ya it’s definitely not a watch for everyone. You’d be getting this for all the unique factors like the case and movement and design but it’s not the easiest pill to swallow price wise. There’s plenty of fun to be had for much less like with the empire that you mentioned. Although side by side the empire is clearly the more affordable one.

    I would say it's much closer to Urban Jurgensen. For reference their previous watch was a very direct Breguet homage. I think they came more into their own for this watch. Ultimately it is a simple three-hand watch taking inspiration from the late 18th, early 19th century so there's only so much originality they can put in.
