Whenever I listen to Still Life, it absolutely baffles me that Mikael went into the studio without having written any of the songs on the album and basically came up with this masterpiece at the studio. That's like not studying or preparing for an exam and getting 100% for the paper. Genius is almost an understatement, it's pure talent.

I've been trying for years to play that riff and sing. It's truly baffling. I enjoy playing a lot of Opeth songs but that particular riff always gets me stuck. Even the riff before it is a rather simple riff comparatively, but it's also surprisingly difficult to play and sing.

@@henrywalton5967nothing against this band, that was an awesome song. But what Michael is doing at that particular section is definitely more difficult to play and sing simultaneously, even though the riffs Vektor are playing are more technical. That guy is singing pretty much on the beat and one word or a small phrase at a time. The line Michael sings is much more complex syllable wise, and the rhythm of the riff is absolutely nuts. It doesn't line up with the vocals at all. I didn't even realize it until I tried to learn it. It's surprisingly and shockingly difficult

That's right - growls started to deteriorate shortly thereafter. Edit: That said, I have a great recording from 2009 where (if I remember right) his growls sound great. The last time he "fully" used his high register was Sonisphere 2011 - their last show before Heritage was released. Oddly enough, I think he sounded much better at that show vs. Royal Albert Hall.

Several sections are missing accents, or just modified. Better to take this your own way-- no one can pull of Lopez's feel. For example, Section at 4:21 is supposed to have a 16 note triplet splash flourish that is missing on the 4th round. It leaves this sense of an and-a, rather then the straighter feel axe gives.
