    Are there any more recordings from this gig? These are the Mikael's most brutal screams ever, surreal performance.

    To my knowledge, this was the only Opeth song pro-shot from this show. I ripped it from my copy of this DVD: www.discogs.com/Various-Metalmania-2003/release/8081454. Their setlist for that night was as follows: Godhead's Lament, The Drapery Falls, Deliverance, Demon of the Fall.

    Hearing performances like this, it's not a massive surprise Mikael lost his voice a few years later. Opeth shows from this era (from the first few years of the 2000s to around the time the Roundhouse Tapes was recorded) have some of the most expressive harsh vocals I've ever heard. The screams in particular are absolutely vicious.

    @@Mikeoneus Yeah, I agree. Although, the Roundhouse Tapes were the first official recording in which it was evident that something's going wrong. I just couldn't enjoy his screams from that point on, even on Watershed. He just lost that something that made me like his screams, and extreme vocals in general. In my opinion, he was by far the best performer of this kind of vocals, and that's evident in the early 2000s era, like you pointed out. Too bad that after that the struggle to deliver is evident.

    Like the realness of this video compared to these released later . You can hear some drumming mistakes but the drumming has a lot of dynamic in tone and doesn't sounds rerecorded . Vocal here is the best in Opeth's history...

    Remember, this is a mostly untouched live mix---the other examples such as Red Rocks (most recent) and to a lesser extent Lamentations, are full concert releases with studio postprocessing. Lamentations much less fixes/punch ins than Red Rocks, but this particular video has none.

  • @stepitupandgo67

    @stepitupandgo67

    It's sure a raw recording...off the board I imagine...Lamentations...how many punches do you think they did at red rocks?...everything seems to match the video ...and I thought they played there just one night?...interested to know if they do post production guitar overdubs or something after the fact...there'd be no way to do drums without it being noticable I'd think..maybe I'm wrong?... I guess there is a lot of mixing magic going on these days...!!!...if anyone would have the tech in the metal world, I would think it would be a big band like Opeth ...I guess I would want to enhance what I had if I had an otherwise great pro shot video of a performance...

  • @blppt

    @@stepitupandgo67 I disagree. Auto Tune is fundamentally changing the sound that came out of the vocalist's mouth. When you start making changes like that, you might as well just sync the album version up to the live show. At some point, its not "live" anymore.

  • @blppt

    @@stepitupandgo67 Red Rocks actually bothers me because its so obvious that there are heavy punch-ins and postprocessing in the studio---the drums, in particular sound laughably clean--to the point where they're often cleaner than the original studio recording. Its nice to listen to, but at some point your mind says "there is no way this is the way it sounded live" and you wonder why you bothered watching a live video at all. Lamentations or Roundhouse, OTOH, while there is some studio postprocessing, don't seem to have any really obvious punch-ins, nor does anything sound out of the realm of what you'd actually hear at a live show. For those reasons, I prefer those recordings.
