OPERATIONS IN PUBLIC FALLOUT SHELTERS COLD WAR CIVIL DEFENSE FILM 29092

Produced in 1963, "Operations in Public Fallout Shelters" is a heavily dramatized Civil Defense film that demonstrates how a public fallout shelter is supposed to function after a nuclear attack. This scenario takes place in a fictional any town called "Middlebury".
The story goes like this: For whatever reason the original manager of shelter number 126, Bill Floyd, hasn't made it into the shelter. His back-up Jerry Bates must assume command. With the help of Gil (played by Anthony Zerbe) and others, Bates quickly gains confidence and whips the shelter into shape. His one early challenge is to obtain baby food for an infant in the shelter. He sends out a search party to the store above the shelter to find the precious food.

It's probably a good idea for everyone to store some casual clothes in their bug out bag, so they don't have to spends weeks, months, or whatever wearing a suit in the shelter.

I remember being taught fallout safety in school when I was a child. We were encouraged to keep our eyes open for the fallout shelter signs located throughout our area. It became habit to look for them and commit their locations to memory. It seems that nowadays there is little to no talk of this even given the current troubling world events.

That is because those shelters no longer exist. The politicians tell the American people that shelters do not work, and that they can not justify the cost despite it being known that the preservation of the people is more valuable than all of the other resources a nation can possess combined. Meanwhile, they build bunkers for themselves. Nations like Russia that are sanctioned have updated their shelters, and even landlocked countries like Switzerland have been able to afford the expense. Civil Defense is everyone’s business alright. Their own business if you believe the United States Government. Keep in mind their official plan is to forcibly conscript survivors they made no provision for, with the explicit intention of working them to death.

Perhaps some panic and obviously anxiety, however, it is critical to get strong leaders involved to get a shelter organized. Once everyone has a job, and the leaders demonstrate survivors be provided for, things will calm down. Organize safety and security to quell discontent. Eventually, the survivors will realize that cooperation will help ensure survival. Lately, with putin and Russia's Saber rattling, these films may be useful, though dated, have great information.

Not necessarily, see what Londoners were like during the Blitz as they sheltered in the underground stations. Yes, they were scared, but they just got on with it and chatted like nothing was out of the normal, no point in getting into a flap about something you can't do anything about.

People would have been driven mad with hunger after just three days on a 900-calorie per day ration consisting of survival crackers and water. By that stage, all discipline and order in the shelter would have broken down. Chances are good that to deal with the problem, they would have had to double their rations so they would get a more tolerable 1800 calories per day, but this would have meant that the rations would have lasted only about a week. It surprises me that the US government didn't consider adding long-lasting tinned meats, powdered milk, and other things to the survival crackers to make shelter life tolerable. But then again, it could be that the budget for that kind of support was found to be prohibitive and so improvements were not pursued.

How many annoying people can you shove into a small room? Apparently, at least 50, and half of them are in charge of something (like annoying the crop out of everyone else.) I mean, who needs a director in charge of fire prevention in a room that small? Can anyone figure out what to do in the event of a fire? And let's see, all the meals are a government biscuit and a cup of water, but we have to take a vote as to what time for meals, and if they should be served cafeteria style or via teenagers pressed into service as waiters. (Do I tip?) I'd pray to God I had a shelter at home just to avoid realizing how stupid my neighbors are.
