The USS Ticonderoga CG-47 and the USS Iowa were employed there as well. I was on board the USS Ticonderoga CG-47. Minesweeping was an art that we quickly learned.

Yes, not mentioned the USS Raleigh LPD-1 brought over the special warfare boats, four of them on the flight deck and four Msgs Mine Sweeper Bay in the well deck but were brought back because they couldn't handle the waters of the Gulf. Later on the Msgs came over Mine Sweeper Ocean going. and the Raleigh served as support for those ships after escorting the tankers the first time we deployed there.

@@StephenPhillipseodauthor Stephen,my email address - kenorawoodside@btinternet.com Would be more than willing to chat about Ernest Will & the "fun" times in the Gulf. have never been able to find any Books about this period.? I was actually up in the main port (Kuwait) and had a visit from an Australian who was writing a book but mainly on the Hostage taking situation.I was in 'STRIKER'(sister ship of Hunter) doing repairs to the Main Engine Port Gear Box- most of it was ashore.Actually witnessed the attack/bombing/killings in Kuwait over a few days before myself & the Chief Engineer were taken off & became Hostages for nearly 5 months in Iraq - a sobering experience to say the least -I did (at risk) phone ASU Bahrain & sent a long SITREP -by this time both Hunter & Striker had changed to Liberian Flag - due Protocol ASU couldn't help in any way & in fact replied to my SITREP "have a nice day" !!! Correction.. Lasalle was in port USS Raleigh LPD 1 was where Helos came from to attack AJR. They were filming Iranians seeding mines. Iranians shot at helos, and that was their last mistake. I was on the Raleigh on the ship, and later on Hercules. Raleigh also brought over "special boats."

One of the facts of the Vincennes, not everyone knew was the CO's wife's life was threatened by the Iranians and the bodies off the airliner were mostly found in the nude and the talk at the time was these bodies were from a morgue. But who knows that could just be the media at the time.

This is a good analysis from a military perspective, but his description of the nature and cause of the Iran-Iraq war is overly simplistic. Tensions between the two countries had been high even before the revolution, and with it came a period of vulnerability that the Iraqis were more than willing to exploit to realize their territorial aspirations and right the perceived wrong of the Algiers Agreement.
