OpenTx Wireless Trainer How-to • Complete Guide for Radiomaster TX16s or Jumper T18 • [Intermediate]

Ғылым және технология

This OpenTx Tutorial shows you how to setup Wireless Trainer with the Radiomaster TX16s and Jumper T18; although, what you see here will work with any OpenTx radio that supports the Multi Protocol Module.
In the video, I used the Internal 4in1 Module for the student radio and an External 2.4ghz XJT module for the airplane receiver.
If your radio--Taranis x9d for example--uses an External 4in1 and an Internal 2.4ghz, you will use the Internal radio for connectivity to the airplane and the External 4in1 for connectivity to the other radio.
BOTTOM Line: The Multi Protocol module in Rx mode is the radio used for wireless connectivity to the student radio. The 2.4ghz module is used for wireless connectivity to the plane.

Hey John, updates on the TX16S trainer connection. The PPM trainer socket at the top of the Radio is pretty well useless for a Buddy Cord to another Tx. The 4-contact socket is a non-standard 3.5mm Cliff Electronics unit and, even when we got the correct plug/cable, the connection proved less than rock solid. So we added a cheap FS-A8S PPM/I-BUS/S-BUS powered by the neg (second bottom) and + (3rd from bottom) pins in the External Bay when the "External Module" is activated and soldered a fly lead to the 3rd contact of the Trainer Socket (PPM Output/Input)to plug into the PPM output of the A8S. An XH balance lead makes a convenient connector for the power leads and is short enough to allow the bay lid to be replaced. The PPM fly lead can be withdrawn to allow the Tx back to be removed or an External Module to be added in the future. The A8S covers our TX16S and FS-i6/S student Radios and can be substituted for any other Tx/Rx combo with a PPM output. According to others on the RC Groups forums, the TX16S (unlike the Frsky QX7 etc) doesn't have a suitable S-Bus or PPM pin in the module bay pins. Seems odd, but the Trainer contact works.

G'day John. You have set this up with the External (non-multi) module talking to the plane and the Internal (multi mode) module receiving from the student radio. Painless360 in his video of May 19 2020 has shown a wireless trainer set-up but using an External (multi mode) Jumper 4-in-1 module receiving from the student radio and the Internal (multi mode) module talking to the plane. So the JR Bay connectors can act as both input and output from/to the receiver/transmitter function. This stuff is admittedly way beyond my understanding but I was wondering if there was any way to connect a simple receiver via those bay connectors to receive the student commands? Or would any circuitry needed to transform say a cheap Flysky PWM/i-BUS/S-BUS/PPM receiver outputs to a form that the Internal Module can process make the process impractical/impossible?

  • @RCVideoReviews

    @RCVideoReviews

    3 жыл бұрын

I'm sure there is some way to wire an external Rx to the bay to receive student commands. I haven't tried it. That is a very specific solution and while an interesting idea I don't know there'd be broad appeal for it. XJT modules are pretty cheap and it just works that way with no fuss. Using an external Multi Module would be quite easy too. If you work it out, let me know though. I love that kind of thinking.

However, I have a problem: I have a Boxer and a Zorro, Boxer is supposed to be a master and Zorro is supposed to be a student. The binding worked after a bit of trying. And I could also see the joystick deflections on the master's monitor. But the moment I connected the external CRSF module, the connection to the Zorro was lost. CRSF off and it worked again. But not the trainer mode as desired.

I'm yet to ever use the 'buddy box' connection; training was always a 'quick pass me the radio' moment as when I was learning there wasn't any means to connect a HiTec 720 to a Futata Skysport haha. I still have my 720 Tx, they were pretty good radios for the day. On a tangent I have been testing the FlySky CAT01 Altitude sensor which reads Air Pressure, Altitude and Ambient Air Temperature. I had set it as a Vario too but it doesn't output positive values on ascent (+), or negative values for decent (-) so it won't generate a true vertical speed reference to correctly drive the Vario option in OpenTX. What the CAT01 sensor does though is give accurate positive values from zero for Altitude, and for Air Pressure it outputs the change as a negative value as it measures the reduction of pressure as height increases. I'm trying to get OpenTX to read either these values and return a sound for increase or decrease via Logical Switches but I wonder if you might know a more elegant solution via OpenTX before I look at buying a true Vario sensor? The CAT01 does return accurate Alt values (as meters) which I have the value call out on a Special Function which sort of makes up for the lack of a vario sounder.

@@RCVideoReviews OK, I got a few things mixed up. I thought that *both* radios (transmitters) will be "bound" to *the same* receiver with the help of the XJT Module. I guess that is not true. Instead, you bind the XJT Module to the receiver in the plane, and then use the *Internal RF* from one radio (acting as a regular transmitter) to connect to the second transmitter (acting as a receiver). Kind of makes sense. I wonder if you can do it the other way around!? Instead of binding the XJT Module to the receiver in the plane, leave everything the way it is (Radiomaster TX16s is bound with the receiver in my plane) and just bind the XJT Module to the second radio. That way I do not have to "rebind" the receiver in the plane, which can be hard (depending on how deep it is berried in the plane) and I can also take the Module out if I do not need it, which is 99% of the time. That is completely separate and the options available for binding on the MPM are completely separate from OpenTx. In any event, when you upgrade OpenTx firmware, they usually suggest a MPM firmware upgrade to go with it. You should see a suggested firmware message in the model setup page.

That’s effectively what’s going on. The multi module is in receive mode. The external module transmits to the model.

@@RCVideoReviews thanks for the reply! I'm gonna try it. I put my xm receiver in the radio master but it got weird. I now know from your video that the ground and power are opposite so I will wire correctly and then try it. Xm receiver is $10 and fits inside the cover compared to another module...

I've never tried to use an Rx in the external bay so I haven't checked to see if the external bay supports rx mode. I know the mpm does. I'll be interested to hear how it works for you.

@@RCVideoReviews No. The Eachine/RadioMaster TX16S radios do not have a dedicated S-bus input in the Module Bay.

I found this same post 3 times. I'll just reply here though: Do you have the same issue with receivers other than the x8r? Have you looked into frequency tuning?

@@aesatishchaudhary5933 How are your antennas oriented? On the radio, it should be pointing at your forehead or it should be laid over on the side. DO NOT aim it at the model. On the model, you should have one oriented on the lateral axis and one oriented on the vertical axis. Also make sure you have nothing between the model antenna and the ground antenna if you can. Try to minimize any obstructions.
