OpenTx Companion Tutorial • Curves: Throttle, Flaps, and Gain Curves How-To • [Beginners]

This OpenTx tutorial will help if you've ever wondered how curves work.
In this rcvideoreviews.com video you'll learn what curves are and how to use them. I provide a couple of different curve examples, the curve generator, and how to apply curves on your OpenTx radio.
Like your dad used to say, "take your medicine..." When this is over, you will feel better.

    Probably true, I've just watched a few trying to figure out how to set throttle at -75% to 100 with a curve under a switch. But no answer why my curve didn't work like I wanted to. Had to change "multiplex" from "add" to "replace" at the mixer screen. Wanted "idle up" under a switch for some old toy drones, they tend to stop the propellers and drop out of the sky at -100 throttle. Not really helpful when I'm teaching a non-gamer, never flew anything friend to fly.

    I was struggling with my flap servo at full end stop with flaps level to wings setup on a 3 pos. switch. Position 2 & 3 were driving flaps much too far down. I added a 3 point curve to keep flaps up at -100, then pos 2 @ -70 for medium flap, then pos 3 @ -55 for full flap. New model wizard puts flaps on mixer page, and this was the key to customize flap end points without overdriving flap surfaces. Figured it out on my own, but with this video, it gives me relief & confidence knowing this is acceptable practice. Thanks John, keep up the great tutorials, your video's are the best source of info without all the crap, right to the point.

    I crashed T28 1.1m yesterday and decided to add flaps to the wing. After asigning flaps to a 3 way switch, my flaps are moving way too much, especially in full down, almost 90° against the wing 😂. Then i said to myself, go watch rcvideoreviews and learn curves.

    Thanks much for your tutorials and advice. Your videos are the best I've found. I'm new to this hobby of RC and find it strangely challenging, as a retired logic and electrical designer. It seems there is no top-down guidance for these machines but some detailed examples like yours. There are so many layers to the transmitter control functions, and I haven't even scratched the surface of receivers, gyros and servos... ranges, characteristics and feedback loops.

I want to be able to adjust for example the normal pitch and throttle curve? My radio is TX16S MK1. Had a JR radio when i was younger and that radio had trim pots for those things built in.

    Thank you again for this tutorial. I understand that curves can be or are like Exponential settings where the output is not equal to the input, but can be set in open tx free, to suit your needs. Maybe I'll use these some time. For now I'm more busy with basic set ups. Until now I only have experience with Spektrum Radios where you have very little possibilities. But on the other hand less time consuming programming to do, to get the average flight setup. At least for my abilities.

    AhHAH! I knew one of you deadband guys would make an appearance. Appreciate the comment. Thanks for checking in. I used to use deadband on my offroad electric race buggy to manage the throw distance between brake and throttle. I've been thinking about a way to use it for reverse thrust. The Castle ESC has an auxiliary wire which lets you reverse the motor. I'm thinking a brake to deadband at -90 then deadband to -95 and reverse less than -95 might be something fun to try on an F3A or 3D plane.

    Flaps should be really easy: 1) Create a 2 Position Curve. Call it FLA. Set one side to -20, the other to 20. 2) Add a switch on the Channel to which you've connected your flaps. 3) In the switch, apply the Curve. Once you've done that, your flaps should travel the distance of the curve. Use the curve values to set the endpoints of travel--full up and full down. Once you've done that, the middle position of your switch (or pot) should always be half of the total travel. If you want something more complex, make it a 3 position curve and put the middle point on the vertical axis at the travel position you want. As long as you don't set your servo endpoints to push the flaps past their stowed position, you really can't hurt anything. So just play around with it. Use your channel monitor to help. If you use Companion, it gets really simple and really fast to tinker. J

So i would like to have depending on the "flight character" i want that time e.g. push button 2 for a different curve for AER channels...best regards...René

    Cool video,but I'm still not able to easily modify my throttle curve. I mean,I create a 5 point curve like yours,really easy also to assign it on the input menu but,the main issue is that I can't see the Y axis moving when I'm creating my custom curve! At the minute 6:40 when you move the throttle you can see exactly in which point of the curve you are,but unfortunately you can't do that on the curve menu while doing the curve. This is a problem when I am setting accurately my throttle curve on my gas 100cc engine while it's powered on,because I don't see (on the curve editing) the stick movement so I have to go casually trying to find the exact point that I wanna modify. Hope to be clear,sorry but english is not my first language. Thanks in advance for your help!

  • @RCVideoReviews

    @RCVideoReviews

    This seems more like a statement than a question. You can modify the curve, you just can't see how your stick aligns to it while editing. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to resolve this. You may just have to go with trial and error. Remember this though, from the inputs screen while you're looking at the curve, you can long press the name of the curve to go to the curve editor. So that at least makes navigating back and forth fast.

There is just a huge dead spot and the sticks are calibrated, I checked the movement in the outputs tab and everything moves from 100% to -100% but I still have this issue with the throttle.
