OpenTX 2.1 Quick Tip: Using subtrim and endpoints with flight controllers (naze32/APM/flip32 etc)

Consider supporting the channel by visiting / painless360
In this video we look at how you can use OpenTX to setup your mutlirotor flight controller (like the Naze32, SPF3, Colibri, APM, Pixracer, Pixhawk, CC3D and others!) to fly great.
Often the Taranis sends pulses that are a little wider than most flight controller like and now and again you need to limit the travel using end point adjustment in the Servo menu as well as adjust the sub-trim so the middle positions of the elevator, aileron and rudder channels are perfect too.

Great video, well explained. Can I ask about the "96" keeping them the same I notice you are 12 short on the left 1012 and not on the right roll (only 5 short) 1995. Probably doesn't make much difference but doesn't it mean you can roll harder left than right, or are there dead zones at the end?

You can use the settings to get both ends the same but in practice there will be very little difference. Happy flying

Is there a way to increase servo travel beyond 100 percent? I wanted to get more travel out of a servo driven pan/tilt gimbal. I know with my DX9 I can increase servo travel up to 150 percent. Can the Taranis do such or something similar?

Yep - enable the extended trims option in the lower half of the 'Setup' menu on the radio for the model you are looking at..

Hi and thanks I've subbed. Can you tell me do you centre the main trims first or get close to the 1500 with the trims and then use sub trims? I have occasional yaw drift on one of my ships.

  • @Painless360

+shlllong use the process in this video with the trim switches in the middle, default position. If you've got drift and the channel value for yaw is 1500 then I'd recalibrate the gyros/accelerometers. Best of luck!

+Painless360 OK many thanks and lastly if min throttle is set at say 1060 and Max is 2000, will that make any difference on say yaw pitch and roll with the minimum numbers of 1000 and mid points of 1500 that you speak of?

Not sure what you're asking. Refer to the manual for the flight controller you're using. I normally like 1060-1940 range or a little more on the main fight controls (yaw, pitch, roll).. Best of luck!

Opentx is awesome. I was wondering if buying the Turnigy 9XR Pro was a bad idea. While it does have its drawbacks in quality it makes up for in this type of access and Jr module flexibility. For me it was price and features. But I can say I like it, the buttons have been updated, mine are very nice, there is only one 3 way switch, but it does need tweaking.

I realize this video is a couple years old now but should I be concerned if my channel ranges are outside what Mission Planner considers normal (1100 to 1900)? I have an X10s radio, with R9M, bound to a R9 Rx. My FC is a Pixhawk (version 1) with latest firmware. My default ranges are MIN= 982 and MAX= 2006. Should I adjust my endpoints to fall within the "normal" range? Or does it matter?

Ardupilot won't like channel ranges that are too much - see the Pixhawk & Pixhawk 2.1 series..best of luck!

Recently got a QX7, however I'm having trouble getting my sticks endpoint to reach 1000 and 2000 microsec, on all gimbal inputs. The Min and Max are all on 100%, but max deflection is around 1200 and 1800 microsec. Is there a way to solve this? I'm relatively new to rc flying
