I don't care what any car enthusiasts say, there is nothing more goose bump inducing than the sound of 1940s war birds at full throttle. God this movie holds up well over time.

Yes it is so shocking how low the Messerschmidt's appear right out of nothing with blazing guns. Look at the horizon. They make their approach and you can literally see them just in the last moment - when it is too late already.

I really love the part of the Frenchman just kind of looking on helplessly and the pilot from New Zealand offers him a ride by scrooching down into the cockpit of the Hurricane.

I can (almost) quote this film word for word.. as can you who’s reading this, otherwise, why are you here? 😉 Fantastic film that still stands up against more recent interpretations..

I do tend to agree with you, but I am interested in RAF and World War II history, Unfortunately, this film suffered due to antiwar sentiments over actions in Vietnam. I suspect much of the criticism that was levied against the film was to undermine its potential use as a propaganda recruiting piece. This is unfortunate, because films like this one often lead a portion of the audience to eventually learn details in strategy and tactics that the cycle of time shows us will once again become necessary.

The scene is one of the most remarkable of any war movie, long as it is and pre-credits too. It perfectly evokes the Allied collapse and German onslaught during the final stages of the Battle of France.

Indeed. Always loved him in this. He plays the combination of being under pressure and leadership very well. I do wish they provided closure on his character beyond the scene when his wife is told that he was shot down. The implication from his last scene and her story is that he survives but is severely burned. I think they do her wrong too, by implying that she will be too horrified by his appearance to remain with him. I know this happened, but it seems wrong to portray it that way.

Samuel, this is such an excellent comment and I wish the channel would receive more like these. The searchable term for what you are referencing is the distinctive Rolls-Royce "Merlin Cough" associated with the negative G's of certain combat maneuvers. It would be Beatrice Shilling OBE PhD who designed and developed a fuel flow restrictor for the carburetor of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. The solution came to be known as Miss Shilling's Orifice. My one gripe about this movie is how the bullets impacted after the 109s flew by... but considering I've seen this movie at least 40 or 50 times, id say its not a big deal

Slight timing error at 5:15. Enemy plane in center makes strafing run but no bullet spashes on the ground. Later, enemy plane strafes from right, Hurricane explodes but now there are bullet splashes along the flight path of the first enemy plane.

However horrible their intent was, you gotta love the supercharger on those 109s

I believe the ground crew Warrant Officer (directing the burning of the unserviceable aircraft) actually served as ground crew in the RAF during WW2 ?

@@TomOwensUAP Please read "Battle of Britain: The Making of an Epic" by Leonard Mosley. The book about the making of the film. Came out contemporaneously with the movie's release. Lots of inside stories, including what happened when the very elderly Dowding was taken to a special pre-release screening of the movie.

I was just watching this movie again for the ? Well I don't rightly know how many times I have watched this movie . But I always wondered . Did they blow up real planes in this scene or were they models ? I hope they were only models . Anyone know for sure ?

"To recreate airfield scenes in the film, with the limited number of period aircraft available for the film, large scale models were used. The first requirement was for set decoration replicas. Production of full-size wood and fibreglass Hurricanes, Spitfires and Bf 109s commenced in a sort of production line set up at Pinewood Studios. A number of the replicas were fitted with motorcycle engines to enable them to taxi. Replicas. See BoB museum Hawkinge. Unlike 633 Squadon in which they did I believe, unforgivably destroy real Mosquitos.

At 5:12 they screwed up the timing of the straffing Messerschmitt so that the bullets he fired don't hit the ground and the plane for 5 whole seconds. I love this film but I wish someone could use CGI just to correct for that one thing.

I like this comment. Very similar to how I think, I want to be respectful of event and the film... but some errors can be irritating and we do have the technology now to fix them. That's when I also consider the fact that there may be a higher level purpose for some errors and this is why they are left as is.

@@111gerbil You do realise that the first "strafing Bf 109" was not actually firing bullets? The muck splashes you see after the pane has passed overhead are in fact pyrotechnic special effects to replicate the muck splashes of bullets impacting the ground that should have happened as the aircraft approached the camera. Its simply a matter that the special effects man, for whatever reason (electrical fault maybe?) failed to synchronise the pyrotechnic muck splashes with the "strafing Bf109" passing overhead. A simple "digital editing" of the mistiming would remove a small error that has obviously irked other people as much as it has myself since I first watched the movie over 50 years ago. But on the other hand I do get your point. Modern day editors would more than likely not be able to control their revisionist impulses and would wade willy nilly through the film changing scenes and "reimagining" lots of the subtle touches that were intentionally included in the film out of this masterpiece.
