Neil Diamond’s exhilarating concert at the Forum on Thursday night was the 34th time that he had performed at the venue, the most by any artist in the history of the arena.
But that impressive number - which will grow by one when Diamond wraps up the American leg of his 50 Year Anniversary World Tour there on Saturday - was only a side note to the famed singer-songwriter’s rousing performance before a sold-out crowd in Inglewood.
With no opening act and Diamond taking the stage at 8:30 p.m., this was a performance that never felt rushed, but went by far too fast. Over the course of 130 fast-moving minutes and two dozen songs, Diamond’s performance (where he was backed by a terrific 11-man band and two outstanding female backing singers) was the perfect retrospective to his celebrated career. This was yet another “Hot August Night” marked by joyful anthems, soft rock hits and introspective ballads introduced and delivered with a master’s touch. Although his songs have been recorded (and often yielded commercial hits) for artists ranging from Elvis Presley and the Monkees to hard rock pioneers Deep Purple, this was a night where the focus was on Diamond alone.
Diamond, 76, continues to sing with a voice that has the range and elasticity featured on his beloved recordings of the 1970s and ’80s. Highlights came early and often, from the Latin-tinged soundscapes that enveloped his warm baritone on “You Got To Me” and stirring take on his first hit “Solitary Man” (recorded in February 1966) adorned with a sonically rich soundscape created by acoustic guitars and four horns to a potent acoustic-styled “Play Me” that found the audience singing along in every chorus.
There was a cohesiveness and flow that blended the diverse mix of songs. Well-known hits such as “Red Red Wine ” (a mega-hit for UB40 in 1983), “Song Sung Blue,” “I’m a Believer” (a 1966 hit for the Monkees), “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “Holly Holy” would frequently be accompanied by the generations-spanning crowd clapping or singing along, or using smart phones to capture memories of the familiar favorites.
When Diamond delved into deeper cuts such as the rock-styled “Jungletime” or reflective “Brooklyn Roads” (a song he delivered to the visual accompaniment of a parade of images and old movies taken of his family while he was growing up in Brooklyn, New York), the audience was thankfully attentive and locked into the arc of the concert. There were obvious cheers when Diamond did a mini-set of tracks from his iconic “Hot August Night” 1972 live album, the standout being “I Am … I Said” that yielded an extended standing ovation.
No Neil Diamond concert experience would be complete without a spirited finale. This night offered that courtesy of a radiant “Sweet Caroline,” cheerful “Cracklin’ Rosie” and tribute to his immigrant grandparents’ journey to the U.S. more than 100 years ago, “America,” the latter capped with Diamond warmly telling the crowd “Thank you Los Angeles and God bless America.”

Have loved Neil FOREVER. I was 16 and my boyfriend (husband) and I used to play ONLY NEIL on the 8 track player in his car. I just turned 70 and I love him as much as I did then. I love all his songs because I know they came straight from his heart and his soul. When he came to Indy for this concert I couldn't go because my husband was in the nursing home with Parkinson's. I would have loved to have been there, but I just couldn't go without him. He had Parkinson's for 10 years and passed away in 2022. When I heard Neil was diagnosed with Parkinson's it broke my heart. I listen to his CDs in the car every day and watch his concerts on KZread. LOVE YOU FOREVER, NEIL.💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖.

This was his 50th Anniversary concert…saw it in Chicago. He did not finish his tour due to his diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. My husband died from Parkinson’s…not easy. Was so glad I got to see this concert…which would be his last. Ahhhhmazing singer, songwriter and actor. Went to Boston to see Beautiful Noise…the play telling his life story. Have been to at least 15 f his concerts…everyone absolutely perfection. He loves his audience and they love him back. Always gave 209%!🔥❤️💎

I don't mind that he's getting older (we're the same age), but it breaks my heart that such an American icon has been afflicted with Parkinson's disease. He's brought so much joy to so many millions of people over his long career. I was there live when he recorded his best album ever, Hot August Night, and it was the thrill of my lifetime! I've seen him multiple times all over the country, and I feel blessed for that. Maybe the best songwriter ever! You're much loved, Neil, and may you continue for many more years.

You very definitely got your money's worth, and then some, at a concert put on by Neil. There was very little kibbitzing with the audience, no flashy dancing or light shows, nothing but this magnificent, talented singer standing center stage regaling his fans with one fabulous song after another for a solid two hours. His performances were worth twice the cost of the ticket and more than worth whatever distance I had to travel to hear him sing some of the greatest songs ever written, the majority of them written by him, the kinds of songs that will still be getting listened to 40, 50 and more years from now. They're timeless, as is Neil himself.

I was blessed to see this show in Fresno, CA shortly before he had to retire from performing live. I first saw him in person in San Diego after he came out with his Beautiful Noise album when I was just 17. Since then, I think I've seen him in Fresno and Bakersfield several times and never did he disappoint. I'm 63 now and still listen to his music every day. Thank you, Neil for everything. P.S. Holly Holy is still my favorite when you did it live at the Greek. Love that double album.

I feel privileged that on Aug 10, 2017, I was among those who watch one of Neil Diamond's last live performances at the Forum - his 50th anniversary tour that turned out to be his last. Unbeknownst to many, this series is his 35th appearance and a record for the most performances by an artist at the Forum. I have pictures to prove it. I feel blessed to have followed his career and saw him a few times before - in NJ, NY, Philly, Las Vegas and the most memorable one: his 50th Anniversary Tour. GOD BLESS YOU, NEIL DIAMOND!

As I was going home that night I drove past the spot where the young people hang out and cruise around. So I cranked my stereo disc player an d cruised them so they could hear real music by an artist. Full vast Neil Diamond doing "his Thing"". It was glorious!!. One of my favorite crooners of my era. Been a huge fan since 77' when all my rocker friends said "what the hell are you listening to?" And I responded with "a true legend!"

It takes tenacity, passion and extreme discipline in anybody’s life to be creative, still show up to share happiness to others. This latest episode maybe his loving way to to say his last hurray to the Arts and Music he continues to excel for 50 years. In 2017, he was 77-78 years old and devoted half Century all over the World. Neil Diamond you’re a gem, a true Icon in the World of Music. We must accept no one is exempted to go through a life span as yours without experiencing a certain Malady.....Parkinson’s Disease afflicted you at least close to your 80’s. I hope this Disease doesn’t totally rob all your dignity and pride, stay close to your loving Family and trusted Friends; millions of Fans, we’re blessed to have enjoyed your Songs, like the Legends before you, Neil Diamond ♦️ you stay true to who you are......and that’s what a lot of us will remember about you.

Most fans dont even know this but Neil held the record for the most consecutive soldout shows at this venue, back when it was the Great Western Forum. I got to attend one of them. Also saw him at the Greek in the mid 70s for his follow up to Hot August Night. He was my inspiration from way back.

In 2017, the highlights of the year was the Joint 60th/30th birthday party for my daughter and I, and going to Birmingham to see Neil Diamond, a few days later. I spent four wonderful days in that city, with my partner.
