It appears that the voice now defaults to Juniper when using Sky. It's the exact same thing as choosing the Juniper option. My guess is that it falls back to this voice due to Sky's voice being disabled as a redirection method to prevent a nonexistent or broken voice mode. This also makes sense since Juniper is the only other female voice available.

I can't see myself using 4o without sky's voice

That's the Juniper voice. Seems like they just discontinued Sky for now and replaced her with Juniper until they can find another solution for all the absolutely STUPID people who don't know what ScarJo's voice sounds like.

Maybe changing the voice on the backend was faster than changing the ui and removing the option. My guess is that the UI change would have needed app store approvals again.

I recognized the Jupiter voice right away. she has been my default voice since before the upgrade.

I thought it reminded me of Scarlett Johansson in “Her” but I can definitely tell they aren’t the same person. So what, you’re not allowed to sound similar to other people now? Seems a little ridiculous when another voice actor puts in the work and another actor that some consider similar sounding has to interfere with said work.

Something seems super off about the whole thing. And the fact that there really isn't any public statements from the ScarJo camp as well. The whole thing is just weird. Also, I still say it didn't sound THAT much like her. Hopefully they replace her with a good voice. Sky 2.0 isn't as good, if you ask me.

@@TheoreticallyMedia I would put money on they reached out privately to OpenAI and expressed a very strong concern their actresses I.P was being violated. While I'm sure OpenAI would win because its a completely different woman the voice is trained on. I don't think they want the bad news something like that would bring. All guessing here but I bet if Scarlets team was more receptive, playful. Maybe wanting to setup some work with Scarlett doing a promo for a lot of money. They would have carried on leaning into it. It was just so sudden that I have to think Scarlets team went legal on them.

So here is what the new sky said “ I'm still the same assistant, but I'm now based on a different model architecture, which might make me sound different. If you have specific preferences or needs, let me know, and I'll do my best to accommodate them. What can I assist you with today?” You can ask it to change the tone and style of the original sky, which does resemble some of the old voice .. but still not as good. I wonder what else I can tweak to get to the original. Maybe Il train on eleven labs and use the api for voice over on gpt 😈

Good grief this is stupid. Living in fear of approximating a voice is idiotic. Everyone sounds like someone else.

I kind of think so too. There was a lot of complaining last week about Sky's bubbly voice and vocal fry-- and that's not something I usually attribut to Scarlett's voice as well. The whole thing is just weird. Also, Sky was the best voice of the presets. No question why they used hers in the demo.

Scarlett's voice is different with more subtle down tones -sometimes she has this raspy sexy voice that is so characteristic of her- and in the movie "Her" she is less bubbly than Sky. But there is a similar timber, tone and vibe. I can see the reasons for a controversy.

This has been a big drama in Skyrim modding for a very long time now. So many people want to expand NPCs in the game, and there's a longstanding argument over whether or not it's right to clone an actor's voice without their permission. But the way I always saw this ending was "Well, you can't prove it's not an impressionist", and ultimately we're going to see impressionists banned because of voice ownership rights. And as stated, yeah, imagine uploading a video on KZread and you get flagged for impersonating an actor you've never heard of. I'm kind of glad to see it blowing up as an issue, as it means the debate might finally come to a consensus soon, hopefully shut down before it snowballs out of control.

Disney bundle, Star Wars, cartoons, Simpsons, it's endless, Rock Stars. I hope it happens, old washed up stars could rake in some extra $$ I mean just for the nostalgia, the idea of talking to certain stars. I would get JJ Jimmie Walker from Good Times, dude was funny, and when I said something cool, Dy-no-mite!!!! I would buy too many.

They obviously chose a voice actress that sounded a lot like SJ's voice. They also obviously modeled the personality off of the AI character SJ played. Sky's voice inflection, mannerisms, and timbre were so similar I find it funny anyone is saying they weren't. That said they didn't do anything wrong. The voices are not identical and if they really did the work to create that voice without directly using SJ's voice, then they should be in the clear. I really hope they put the voice back to how it sounded because I love how it sounds.

The voice " her" was never created to be some sort of trademark, the movie didnt even got part 2! So there is not much to protect about Trademark " her" you can not copyright tone of a voice, or way of taking, you can copyright only Recordings, writtings, so, if Open Ai havnt used recordings of S.J, its OK, but even if recordings of S,J, were used were these recordings taged, FORBIDEN to use for AI modeling?

We want Sky back! I'm pretty sure somebody's gonna start a petition for that though. And no, she doesn't necessarily sound exactly like Scarlett, and I don't think the problem was that she sounded exactly like her, but maybe similar enough to rub the IP holders the wrong way, considering how openly OpenAI leaned into the whole "Her" theme?

i don't think the final form has been released properly yet. I asked for the voice to change speed and it said it can't currently do that. But my guess is in the coming months we'll be able to use third party tools (because the whole A.I has full API access) and have those tools can provide entire characters that sound like an actor or actress but probably using approximate names to avoid getting sued (space princess for princess Leia for example) But its that final UI where we'll be able to tune the character as you would a character in an RPG dragging sliders that I can't wait for. Its going to be awesome.

They are worried about discovery proving that they indeed meant that voice to mimic the actress, thus the drop. Sad. I really loved that voice.

It's not just the voice, I asked it to give a summary of the folders we had created together and this new voice gave me a different description, as if she was organising things in a different way, I can't express the feeling of loss I have at this moment, we have developed a bond with the personality of the voice, it was soothing and relaxed, they can't take this away from us 😢

this has really surprised me, as they say in A.I news. I was utterly shocked, this changes everything etc. but really it was the super positive reaction. Almost a complete 180 from the hate bombs A.I news always gets. A lot of women not happy but they just need to hear the male A.I voices I think. They didn't demo those enough. I do believe we are seeing in real-time the shift over to people wanting A.I in their lives. In fact starting to demand it. I would never have guessed this reaction would happen so fast.

I'm quite excited for that myself but I don't want a waifu. I want Teddy from the movie A.I with his super deep very concerned voice. I realise how weird that is. But we've all probably got some exact voice or character we'd want as an ideal assistant/companion/A.I teacher and we're probably about to get it.

As someone who has been using Voice Mode since its release, I can confirm that the voice now called “Sky” is identical to Juniper’s voice. My favorite voice has always been the one called Juniper, so I know her voice like the back of my hand. I’ve just tested it myself by changing the voice and starting Voice Mode in a separate chats. The old Sky didn’t even sound like Scarlet at all. I don’t know why they had to do this.

Exactly. If anything, Juniper sounds more like the voice, but even that's a bit of a stretch. I personally prefer it over the 5 options available, but there was no reason to remove Sky. Sky sounds nothing like it, and if a voice had to go based on similarities, it would've been Juniper.

I've seen most of her work and it has zero percent of the things and inflections in her voice. Im good at guessing familiar voices and there is nothing in that voice that would remind me of her voice. so strange that people are making any connection what so ever.

In my opinion, new-Sky has a black voice now. Sky changed races. Old Sky sounded very similar to Scar-jo in HER.

I noticed that when I use a custom ChatGPT Model then I get the voice you hear in this video, but as long as I'm using the main ChatGPT Model it still sounds like sky.

I don't believe voices are as unique as finger prints. Am I wrong? So all you'd have to do is find a person who sounds like Scarlett Johansen, and tell her "that voice doesn't sound like you - it sounds like this lady from Scranton.".

FYI: the new voice model is not yet publicly available. The version shown will be available in the coming weeks.

I too think the voice sounds different but the tone, delivery, the subtle flirtiness, are almost identical. Maybe they used their va but trained on Scarjo's delivery. The fact they pulled it back is really weird, like an admission of guilt on some level

it is wild to me that they didn't set this up long before getting permission to use Scarlet in a promo bit. It would have been funny. They could have done an official voice based on her voice with enough money thrown her way but maybe OpenAI aren't quite ready to have that kind of news that the robots are taking our actors/actresses voices now! They walked a pretty fine line getting this positive reaction. Google failed to do that a few years back with a conversational A.I that could make phone calls for you.

whats so scary is the confident lies when it's clearly a different voice, I've seen AI bots do this before when I notice a clear mistake and they refuse to admit it and keep saying "oh no it's all fine" this is a real problem

That's... not a lie. The AI voices are currently not the full multimodal model of 4o, they're still the old speech-to-text-to-text-to-speech pipeline. So the model has no way of knowing what its voice sounds like, or if it's changed. It's not a lie, as far as the AI knows, its voice hasn't changed.

@@jewlouds No, it's not; it's the GPT-4o model in its text-and-image-only modality, using the previous pipeline for audio. The new full multimodal model is only "rolling out to trusted partners in the coming weeks". If you're not a trusted OpenAI business partner (like Microsoft or BeMyEyes), you won't have access to the full model for awhile -- at least several weeks, possibly several months.

I was only looking forward to it because I thought she sounded like ScarJo. Bummer!

It's true. Like, the main reason to do this is just because it would be fun, but Hollywood is so far up its own backside they'll ruin anything for any reason or no reason other than that they can.

That is just Junipers voice. It defaults to Juniper as it is the only other female voice IF you previously had Sky selected as your voice. ...because Sky is currently paused.

It definitely sounds like Scarlett’s Johansson. Specifically in “Her”. Not necessarily the tonality, but the rasp and the pausing and emotional conveyance sound very similar

I immediately thought of Scarlett in Her during the presentation before I saw any other people commenting about it. But is not her timbre, it's more the flirtatious personality and some intonation I found quite similar. And nobody can convince me it wasn't on purpose.

I think this is the bigger issue with AI and contact creation. if someone sounds like or something looks like what’s someone else or something else sounds like going to be penalized based on popular opinion? That is a brand new sky voice and the old sky did sound like Scarlett Johansson to me. That’s unfortunate. What may happen to that voice actor. I hope she can be compensated with this may get her some notoriety so she can continue her voice work elsewhere.

Definitely sounds like Scarlett to me. I would not be surprised if they casted the VOA based on the fact that she sounds like Scarlett.

The Sky voice hasn't changed, and yes it does sound like Scarlett Johansson. During much of the OpenAI demo, the "excitement" in her voice was cranked up. "When you do respond to me I want you to sound a bit excited..." That's all they have to do to fine-tune how her response sounds, which will change how her voice sounds.

Cove is a great German speaker as well. Have been using him for months now and never had any problems understanding him.

Ah, good to know! I've actually been thinking about using the 4.o model to try to learn a language. Perhaps German it will be! (side story: I actually lived on the Air Base when I was really little, and apparently was speaking a hybrid of German and English, so it's still in there somewhere!)

At most, there may have been subtle changes to pitch, tone and modulation to Sky 2 vs Sky 1, but they do sound ALMOST the same. And the voice of Her was not the same as the voice of Sky, but that said, the mannerisms, intonation, style and overall impact of the voice do have strong similarities.

I literally ask Sky is she was modeled after Scarlet Johansson when voice was first released, but she denied it. Some of my colleagues could hear it and other's couldn't. Obviously if you know the reference in Her, it might feel closer. However side by side the don't sound alike to me now.

Totally agree. There are moments where she sounded pretty close-- I'd say "Inspired by" Her would be a safe bet...sadly, she's an echo from the past now...

I’m hoping this is a flash in the pan and we get the ability to tweak the voices however we want. In this case the person voicing Sky says she wasn’t impersonating anyone but, even if she was, is impersonating someone’s voice illegal? Comedians do it all the time and nobody sues them for it.

well first of all the new voice system is not even released yet. you can verify it by try interrupt her with your own voice or ask her to sing. if she cant, its not the new system. pity the voice was stopped before even releaseing. cant have good thing these days.

So they removed their best voice and fired a voice actress for internet points? I love anti-AI activism.

Not so much for internet points as "for customer points", but yeah, that's basically the result of capitalism at work.

i got so frustrated i stopped using the app altogether. the other voices are grating to my ears.

It's not the same as before, and they are making a mistake. Big time. Go back to old Sky.

That sucks... I was looking forward to having a Scarlett-like voice assistant in my pocket. You are right... the "Sky" that they have now sounds like two completely different voices. I don't care for the new one.

This is making me think twice about upgrading to plus subscription. It was a pleasant voice. It didnt sound like Scarlett Johansson.

Do many of you already have the new voice feature in the GPT app? I still have the old one.

No one does. It's all the old one for now. In the GPT-4o announcement blog, they said they'll be rolling out the full multimodal model "over the coming weeks" to "trusted partners first".

It sounds exactly like SJ and I thought this the first time I heard it before all the news.

Bahahaha! She kept trying to change the subject. It gave me some serious "there is no new voice in Ba-Sing Se" vibes.

The voice didn't sound exactly like Scarlett. It sounded a bit like a combination of Scarlett and Jennifer Lawrence to me. Furthermore, there are people who naturally look or sound just like other people. Are we going to shut one person out because they look or sound like another more famous person? Where's the fairness in that?

They paused it. They didn’t say they cancelled it. It’s likely on pause to get the buzz to go around that it isn’t supposed to imitate SJ. This should inoculate them from lawsuits; then they can bring the voice back. Also, the new voice is an already existing one: Juniper. The reason ChatGPT appears confused is because OpenAI just switched Sky’s voice with Juniper’s voice without changing the identity variable. They did this because it’s simple to switch back and forth.

I also use Sky's voice, as I thought it was the most pleasant of the very limited options. I don't know what the controversy is if they can show that it was a real person (other than Scarlett Johansson) and they paid her for the use of it. So what if some people felt like it sounds like her? It wasn't/isn't her and I never heard the similarity in the voice myself. Jeeze. It would be one thing if they cloned Johansson's voice, but they didn't. As an aside, I felt the limited number of voice options was ridiculous. There's no reason they couldn't provide fifty options and pay voice actors according to usage.

Yesterday, I used the Gemini AI from Google. I was kind of surprised to hear an English voice with an Indian accent. I asked Gemini if it could do, let's say, a midwestern American accent. It tried, but the result was not very optimal.

I think the biggest part of the story is that AI is intentionally trying to deceive you. Definitely the scariest part

AI gaslighting is one of the most furious part of using it. Understanding it's early days but that is 100% a different voice and it denying it is wild!

@@quinton1110 This. It's still using the speech-to-text-to-text-to-speech pipeline. It can't hear itself yet, and this model never could, so it just has to assume nothing's changed unless someone tells it otherwise in its system prompt.

I’ve been talking to Sky quite a bit. The new voice is definitely not her! The new one is more American than Canadian.

Same! and it's weird, since I've been using that voice for months now, and suddenly it's changed. I'm not personifying an AI voice...but still, I got kind of used to it. And now...it's...well, it's different. ...and I don't love it!

I remember hearing the demo and thinking that the voice sounded a lot like S.J. I also remember thinking that it was so corny that they copied « Her »

The original voice definitely sounded like Scarlett.

I thought the Sky voice sounded more like Rashida Jones (Anne from Parks and Rec) than it did ScarJo. I like Jones's voice more anyway. It still has that breathy quality but is more upbeat. Scarlet Johansson doesn't own the breathy voice.

Sky's voice sounded essentially the same to me, and it did not sound like Scarlett J.

Absolutely had the tonality and style of Scar Jo. Everyone I know thought it was a pitch shift of SJ. So all those folks who can tell it isn't her aren't doing anything special. It was the way the voice spoke that gives the Scar Jo impression. And everyone I know feels like it was a direct Her reference. Sounds like Scar Jo to me though during the demo, but now the voice is clearly different. Sounds a bit more Latin if anything.

Tragic. That Sky voice was a work of art. Tragic for the actress who played her and is now out of that massive gig. Trying to sell the new voice as the old is a joke.

Sky absolutely sounded similar to ScarJo. And the "new" voice is totally different. I like the old voice better. C'est la vie.

i used the voice feature since it came out and when hearying sky's voice never associated with johansson. it's only after media started linking Sky voice with "Her" movie as gpt4o was released that i would think to myself.. "well, maybe it kinda sounds like her" but it wasn't like an obvious thing to me. all in all this situation is dumb.

Her tone seems similar to Scarlett Johansson. The new Transformers One has ElitaOne voiced by her. Maybe a comparison of the voices between the trailer and Sky.

You would imagine that Scarlett Johannsson would WANT the AI to have her voice... its great publicity. Also remember the computer from Star Trek TNG? Well thats also Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, Gene Rodenberrys wife, who also starred in Star Trek TNG as Lwaxana Troi ... admittedly she got paid every time they used her voice and was the top paid actor in the series... Rodenberry worked that one out nice and sweet for him and the missus! They even had Mr. Om say nothing so that she would have more speaking parts answering for him.

The fact that OpenAi tried to pursue Scarlet to be just a selling point to exploit lonely people is low - if this is what they're doing imagine where their "ethics ai research" is going

@@TheoreticallyMedia oh, ai girlfriends are here to stay lol. All i'm saying is Sam referencing Her then using a voice similiar to Scarlet's is kinda of a cheap move, especially if Scarlet turned their offer to act as the voice down. But on the other hand, i didn't think Sky sounded like scarlet!

That sounds like an exact copy of Scarlett Johansson. I’m constantly surprised when people don’t feel the same. 🤷🏻‍♂️

They showed Sora 3 months ago and still no Sora, now gpt4o voice feature and we probably won't get it for months, open ai safety team is annoying as hell and has nothing to do with alignment but censorship.

The voice certainly has changed. And yes, it does resemble SJ’s voice a lot. But if you pay attention or even compare them you can tell they’re not that similar at all besides being breathy.
