Open String Exercises On The Violin

musilesson.com/open-string-exe...
Hi everyone! In this video we go through some exercises to help you improve with playing open strings, and changing strings. Remember to keep alternating your bowing, don't play the same bow direction twice in a row while you're still learning to change strings. I hope this helps everyone!

    Wooahhh im left handed too. Ive only been playing for about a month and i will try these exercises. I had to learn the right handed way because there arent any violin teachers that are left handed and it will be hard for them to teach a lefty in a whole group of rightys but i got used to it.

  • @Musilesson

    @Musilesson

    Yes, I've seen that many times. I didn't have much of a choice as my left handed playing is the result of a childhood injury. If you can find yourself a good private teacher, they will help you navigate the issues of left handed playing. I love group classes, but due to the nature of multiple students, it's difficult to deal with every student individually. I wish you the best of luck and if you have any questions, please feel free to comment further!

    @@Musilesson Yes i have a question. My teacher says i need to use my whole bow. I only use the middle of my bow because when i try to use the whole bow, my arm hurts. I get pain when i reach near to the tip. This mostly happens on the G, D and A string. Maybe I'm holding the bow incorrectly? I dont know... Do you know what may be the cause of this? Thanks for the help

    @@cake8488 Hi! I'm so sorry you're feeling pain! My first thought is to make sure your elbow is raising to meet the level of the string you're wanting to play. Where is the pain occurring? Do you normally do string change exercises?

    @@cake8488 First, I won't be able to make a full recommendation having not seen you playing in person. However, this would be my recommendation: play with VERY little tension. Make sure you are not "muscling" the wrist, elbow, or bow. The motto I tell my students regarding their hold on the bow is "you feel like you're going to drop it but you don't". Next, perform string change exercises and the wall challenge every day. This should help keep your posture sharp and hopefully loosen up your arm. Please let me know if this helps. If you are still having issues, discuss it with your teacher. It may be something specific to you or something perhaps a doctor could shed more light on. Best of luck!

  • @Musilesson

    @Musilesson

    My pleasure! Some say it takes 10,000 hours to become a virtuoso on the violin. Honestly, to master the instrument will take a lifetime, and I don't say that to be discouraging! I've played violin for 30 years this year and I learn something new all the time. My best advice is to keep practicing and always push yourself to learn more and allow yourself more time playing the instrument to fully understand it. Trust me, it's not outside of anyone's reach to be a great violinist, but it requires everyone to put in as much time as they are able. Time combined with quality instruction will always help you achieve your goals of playing beautifully on the violin.

    my G string sounds horrible, any ideas why it sounds like that?

  • @Musilesson

    @Musilesson

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Sara! It's going to be hard to diagnose the issue without hearing the sound of the G string. Take a deep look at the string and make sure that it hasn't partially unraveled. If it hasn't, then that removes one common issue. Other than that, how would you describe the sound you're hearing? Make sure your string is in tune, for starters. Something to try: rosin up your bow and play directly next to the fingerboard (but not on top of it) and then play directly in the middle between the fingerboard and the bridge. Do you hear a noticeable change in the quality of the sound?

  • @Musilesson

    @Musilesson

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi anonymous! Without being able to hear the string myself I can only speculate, but if I were to take a guess, it might have something to do with the strings themselves. Steel core strings tend to swell up in pitch when we play them strong and fast. It could be that there is an issue with the core of your string. I'm sorry I can't offer you more help. I hope you get it figured out!
