Open Space: Dave East | Mass Appeal
For the latest episode of Open Space, Harlem's own Dave East stopped by MASS APPEAL HQ to talk about his Def Jam debut Paranoia: A True Story, which drops today.
"My lifestyle just changed dramatically over the last year," says East, a new father whose financial situation has improved dramatically since he began his mixtape grind seven years ago. "I'm from the streets and I'm used to being at the bottom and seeing people gettin' it. So now I'm on that other side and it kinda got me watching my back and really keeping an eye on my surroundings and the people I bring around me. I try to keep that circle tight."
His concerns are not just the usual celebrity complaints. "It's a spooky feeling," East reveals. "I've had two of my closest people to me get murdered in the last four years. It just be shit in my mind. But it be so much more positive shit going on that overshadows it, but that thought is still there, so I named it Paranoia."
East feels his new project shows his artistic growth. "Anything you do long enough you gon' start to really become a master," he says. "I feel like all of the mixtapes up until now was finding me. I didn't know who I was musically until my last two projects. I was still kind figuring out, 'Am I gonna be this super-New York rapper? Or am I gonna do everything? Am I gonna try to experiment with different artists, different beats.?"
Having chosen the latter route, Dave East refuses to be put in a box. And while he's happy to be working with the likes of Nas, Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana, and Chris Brown, he feels a responsibility to represent for NYC rap fans. "People wanna hear that New York shit. They wanna hear the streets. They wanna hear the grimy, the pain. No matter how much that crossover record is needed, people be wanting to hear certain shit from me, cause you can't get it from too many people no more." The secret, he says, is balance. Lol after your done doing that queen listen 2 his lyrics. He actually is a great emcee/poets he actually rap unlike most of these new rappers. Then u will like him even more.Nas actually discovered him and signed him 2 his label. He put out a collab album last year with Styles P of The Lox and its 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥. I think the best project of last year 2nd to Nipsey Hussel "Victory Lap" peace queen.

James Fleming no lie. he had a unique sound and style that resonated with so much people. I feel like he could of done so much more than what was left behind. chinx carried that torch a little further but was inevitably met by the same fate. when you put that together i often find myself concerned at times cuz East is cut from the same cloth. but I got faith in my dude and he appears to wise and humble enough to move differently and learn from his predecessors.

AllCity 2x For sure came out tough with that rugged type vibe bar after bar ! I feel like he got better with mixing up his flow on this project too. I'm from Seattle & listen to almost everything g and I can say East is arguably harder than most the West coast rn. Easy. He's smart too for the variety of collabs . From Wiz to Chris Brown he hot something everybody can fuck with.

He's definitely gonna be around for many more years to come and when it's all set and done he's gonna open more doors up for New York artist such as myself ✍🏻💯who write till that ink in the pen is all gone and the book is all but finished. He's more then just a artist in my opinion and even more then a role model he's inspiration he's given Us something much more allowing us to know that "It's possible" if you work & don't quit

I like Paranoia from my 1st few listens but it seems like my fear 4 him may be a reality. He released an incredible mixtape in Kairi Chanel. I was worried if his album would top it and from what I can tell so far, it hasn't. Not saying Paranoia is bad but the mixtape has better songs and did a better job of submerging me in its vibe. That's just my opinion. I want East to win regardless.

I don't understand why ppl be hatin on fab he's been one of the most consistent artists for the past 20 years.
