This is a profound movie with lots of action and drama, too. My husband and I watched it many times. Now that he has passed I view it by myself and it makes me feel close to him.

Just came from another video where someone said their dad had just passed away and the video they were commenting on was the last one that appeared on his KZread watch list... it was Don't Worry Baby by The Beach Boys. Pretty song. Every once in awhile I'll see comments like that, and yours, and it almost makes it so that you somehow feel like you knew the person they are referring to. I just imagined you and your husband watching this movie sitting on a comfy couch. Didn't know him and don't know you, but your sharing has invoked feelings of regret for your loss mixed with imagining good memories you two had together. Hope you're hanging in there. :/

He fits the role of a cowboy so perfectly. Augustus Mccrae in Lonesome Dove is the best role he's ever played in my opinion.

This a brilliant film that didn't get a SINGLE Oscar nomination. Absolute outrage. It's one of the greatest westerns ever.

Still remember my Dad taking me to see this, years ago. My Dad passed in 2020. But, I'll never forget how he reacted to that line, "You're men, ain't ya?" Needless to say, he loved this movie, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Not a whole lot different than another movie with Robert Duvall taking a turn on a barkeep. In Lonesome Dove, Duvall as Gus McRae, along with Woodrow Call at a San Antonio saloon where Gus lays open the face of a barkeep with his pistol because of "dawdling service".

I got it in my top 10 movies ever -- not just Westerns. Men who live in a world where right and wrong has to be worked out by their own conscience. There's no law around to enforce it. They have to do it themselves. We could find ourselves in a world like this at any time.

I own the Man with No Name Trilogy. Same as I own 5he Classic Hitchcock's, just haven't gotten around to watching them yet. But four AND five on my list of Westerns might be Unforgiven and Pale Rider (paint the town red) lol.

"There's things that gnaw at a man worse than dying.".... Damn right there is, I'm 65 years old and regret letting certain things pass years ago. Oh, I stood my ground at times and even whooped ass at other times, but I still put up with way too much in my life from different jackasses I encountered. Even more than 40 years later, some of the things I let go still bother me. Take it from a bitter old coot like me, don't be afraid to fight your battles as they happen because if you don't they will still fester inside you many years later and there is no cure for that.

Maybe a small advice from someone working on ICU since 16 years: yes, you are right, there are things worth fighting for. but there are much more things, where it is important to just let them go or they controll you for the rest of your life. Or they make you to the "bitter old cot", you are sadly calling yourself. Even if you are 65, there is still the chance to simply say: "Fuck it, that shit is long gone and it won`t make my days bitter anymore, because I can´t change it anyway." I have seen many people passing away, regreting to not doing this. You still have the chance, use it. Sorry if my English sounds funny, I am from Germany.

@@fucksurface Thanks for the advice but do you really believe I haven't heard this before and thought in depth about it? Unless you have walked in my shoes you can't know what I experienced or how it affected me. Some of us are not the "turn the other cheek" type and I truly believe that "forgive and forget" is overrated if not impossible in many cases. No one from my past controls me now, it's just that if I stop and think about it, I should have beat them down instead of just walking away. Maybe I'm just not a very nice person but I have even cut off all contact with close family members for their past offenses and rightly so; I only regret not putting them in their place sooner. I know you mean well but things aren't that simple for me. To sum it up, people are awful, and my life is better off without so many of them around.

@@CaneFu I get what you are saying. A few things to clarify my view: 1. For me "forget or forgive" is not "turn the other check", it´s more about a decision I make, that I don´t want to carry some shit around for the rest of my life. And I don´t want anything (a person or a thought) to do that to me. And I absolutly understand, that there are things, where it is very difficult to do that. Because of my work, I have seen people regreting this again and again, they simply said: "fuck, this shouldn´t have be with me all this time. 2. I didn´t walk your shoes and I am sorry, if it sounded as some smart ass comment from my side. I just wanted to explain, that I have seen a lot of people in their last hours, fighting with things similiar to what is bothering you and regreted, that they didn´t try to get loose of it early. And sorry again, I hope things don´t sound to confusing, because english isn´t my first language. Stay healthy!

My brother told me about this movie; one of the best westerns ever. I miss my brother.

This has been one of my all time favourite westerns since I first saw it. The casting, the delivery from Duval and Costner not to mention the cinematography in this was brilliant.. Hugely underrated in my opinion. Up there with the likes of Unforgiven and Tombstone..

Silverado doesn't get nearly enough attention. I don't think it's as good as this or Unforgiven, but it's a legit fun movie. It's Lethal Weapon to this and Unforgiven's Die Hard.

One of the best westerns ever and highly underrated. Shootout better than the OK corral in Tombstone. Duvall, one of the greatest!

I like how Duvall refers to Costner as "The Marksman" after he blows the mirror to bits!

This is one of my favourite Westerns of all time. Just saw it again tonight for the about 10th time. Funny, this was the first time I realized that the lead soundtrack by Michael Camen is virtually lifted from his soundtrack for Gilliam's Baron Munchausen from 1987. Just differently paced. Anyone else notice this? Check and see for yourself.

There’s a lot of truth in these old westerns that we could use today.

Watched dozens, or scores of westerns for decades, made from the 40's till now. And 'Open Range' is one of the best.

"You're men, ain't ya?" That's when your eyes hit the floor as the shame overtakes you. Absolutely devastating line by Charlie. It's a call to arms for all men to stand up for truth and justice. The fight is all of ours, not just for some appointed group. We've forgotten this lesson. Great film.

How does Duvall not get an Oscar for this!? His accent and rancher talk - generally his whole persona - is so much more authentic and believable than in Lonesome Dove. This is his magna opus as far as I'm concerned.

Have been since I was old enough to sit up and watch. I’m 64 now.

I love Robert Duvall's little laugh after Costner slides the beer mug into the bartender's face. Reminded me of an old SF CSM I knew back in the day.

This is a truly great western, and done on a shoestring budget. In fact, I seem to recall hearing that Costner himself bankrolled much or all of it. As an example of that thing called "the cowboy way" it's unmatched.

For whatever reason, I've really come to appreciate Westerns more as I've gotten older. 'Open Range' and 'Jeremiah Johnson' would be tied for my favorite, while 'Tombstone' and 'Unforgiven' run a close second. I think Robert Duvall is a national treasure - thought the dynamic between he and Costner in this was just outstanding!

Duvall hit the perfect trifecta of westerns...Lonesome Dove, Open Range and Broken Trail. And had his bad guy tiny role at the end of the original True Grit.

"There are some things that gnaw on a man worse than dying." So true. If you make a stand for what is right and die while making that stand, it's all over. If you back down and don't make that stand, you may live, but you will remember your cowardice for the rest of your life. Yes, there are some things worse than dying.

Probably an early, realistic portrayal of PTSD. "DON'T stand behind me Boss." (Said with a loaded gun in his hand).

Scene's in "Open Range" with Annette Bening were electric, real, heart touching. The story line made the audience wish for this beautiful ending to a harshly lived environment. It left us wanting an "Open Range" #2, #3, #4.... Robert Duval & others also presented outstanding performances. Sincerely, DM

Robert Duval as Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove slammed the barkeep's face into the bar, shoved his pistol in the man's face, drank his shot of whiskey before tossing the empty glass into the air and shooting it. Then he said to the barkeep, *"Now then, if I could have a fresh glass, please."* Hahaha...

I can't watch to much these days, but I'll watch this movie. Just watched Lonesome Dove too. Haven't seen it in 30 years.

This is a great movie on so many levels. The gunfight scenes are set and shot in a way that actually makes sense.

Man this was a great movie by far , I could watch this over & over .

I like when the Langley's tell Charley and Boss that Sue is not the doctor's wife, but his sister. Liked the acting in the entire movie, but enjoyed this scene immensely. This is an elegantly done western, and truly underrated.

Every scene in this movie is brilliantly acted and scripted...

"Open Range" is one of my favorite westerns. While some may hoot and holler 'bout the virtues of a film like "Tombstone" and its over-the-top, mad-cap smorgasbord of snappy one-liners and star-studded six-shooters that never go empty, "Open Range" is a subtle, quiet-spoken gem-of-a-western that takes the time to reload before it blows-a-hole straight through you--in a good way.

One of beloved movies, and this is my beloved scene.

I like Duvall much better as an old man actor. He just fits the part really well

Duvall is one of the greats. Love his acting as well as Costner’s. A great movie along side Unforgiven.

Very, very underrated movie. In my opinion.

Best "FU" in the scene is "Believe I'll have me another" as the barkeep walks off lol.......

Robert Duvall is always a pleasure to watch.

Love westerns. At my house its always western Sunday.

It's movies like this that a man especially can learn about being a man! The crap today doesn't even come close.

Their chemistry is amazing and goes right to the heart of this movie.

Awesome movie, one of my favorite Westerns. The sound work on the gunfire and shootouts was completely Oscar worthy.

I like how Boss didn't even flinch or act surprised when Charlie threw the glass at the bartee's face or when he shot the sign.

Pro Tip: If you're at a bar and Robert Duvall walks up to it with another man, go find a table.

If you listen he pulls both hammers back. He gave that sign both barrels at once, which would kinda explain the excessive nature of the blast

I am not from America but the speech that Duvall's character made in the cafe confronting the Marshall, kinda makes me understand why the 2nd Amendment is important to some in America. Great movie by the way..👍

Robert Duvall always has a hard time getting a drink for some reason.

I just finished watching this a couple hours ago with my nephew. He had never seen it and loved it.. It's one of my favorite westerns. No matter how many times I have watched it I still always enjoy it

The guns in this movie sounded like artillery. It was incredible in the cinema. I mean, you jumped when they went off! Great, great film and one of the greatest Westerns.

I would normally say that line, Charlie Wade said every young man should hear that. “ there are things that gnaw at a man worse than dying.” Unfortunately, today’s youth have no idea what it is to be a man and they wouldn’t even understand that statement. 😢

This is up there with Tombstone as far as great Westerns go.

The Shootist Magnificent Seven and any Gary Cooper

This is my favorite scene in this great movie, " My name is Boss Spearman, the " marksman here" .. LOL Anyone who enjoys westerns like this and haven t yet seen " Lonesome Dove" are in for a treat and the best western in my opinion. Enjoy.

I used to watch westerns all the time as a kid with my grandfather. Clint Eastwood, John Wayne the lot. All his bedtime stories were westerns too. Cowboys and Indians. Good memories.

I LOVE the way the guns sound in this movie.

Lonesome Dove, Open Range and Broken Trail is a must see Trilogy of Robert Duvall films that probably depict the old West as it really was.

Great movie. Great scene. Great acting. Magnificent stuff.

Kostner got that end right, "You're men aren't you? There's things that can gnaw on a man worse than dying."

This is one of the best scenes in cowboy western cinematic history. In my humble opinion.

This perfectly demonstrates Teddy Roosevelt's quote "Speak softly and carry a big stick"

1:00 That camera shake! Really sells the power of the shotgun. I read this article once about a guy who was in the Army or something (I can't remember--it's been a while.) He was talking about how Shotgun don't really have a practical use inside a military outfit save for one: He said as an MP, his LT would carry a shotgun around. When guys on base would get too rowdy, he'd crack that thing out and fire one into the air. He said, "I've never seen an implement so singularly successful at immediately ending all the bullshit." Ain't that the truth!
