In this video I down official NOAA nautical charts for the coast of Maine to the Open CPN chart plotting program running on my Raspberry Pi and then I connect a GPS to the Pi.

I know nothing about computers except how to turn them on, but watch and appreciate your expertise.

You are very welcome. I used to do a lot of computer control applications for scientific instruments, but I am now about 20 years out of date. So what you are getting from me is the simple stuff.

Thanks for the video, it gives me confidence that i can probably assemble one of these and actually get it to work!

I am sure you can. The only hard part was downloading OPEN CPN because the command syntax is fussy. Other than that it is easy.

Thanks for this Todd, its so good that you use non tech language, like when you said serial port and then explained this was the USB, I need simple. I am now looking to try this out and reckon I could do it, the fear is buying the wrong hardware, but your previous videos cover that.

I try to make my explanations understandable. Building a Raspberry Pi based system is easy. The most complex part is downloading Open CPN since the commands are pretty fussy and any typo causes them not to work. Physically, if you can operate a Phillips screw driver you can do the build. In other words anyone can do it.

@@andrewleech6468 I have had this system running on my powerboat all summer. It has worked flawlessly although there was a bit of a learning curve to get everything the way I wanted it.

I will try to answer your question. You have a couple of options. One is to buy an NMEA to USB adapter. As far as the GPS goes, that will cost a good deal more than a UBS GPS receiver. Personally I would just buy a USB GPS which will be plug and play.

HI Todd, thanks for your video! just a question: I have a GPS with a 9 pin connector output plug to the Nemea187. how can I plug it in the Raspberry Pi as it is USB? any converter available?

Again you can probably do it with an NMEA0183 to USB adapter, but I have no experience interfacing a depth sounder to OpenCPN. Alternatively you could invest in an NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 converter and then plug the NMEA bus into the ethernet port on the Pi (I think). Again I have no experience with this. You might want to do some research on the OpenCPN forum to see if anyone has done this. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I have not interfaced any NMEA 0183 components to my Pi.

I use a GPS puck with a USB output. Mine is quite old (2013) and I don't think it is made any more. Pretty much any USB GPS receiver should work. I don't think one of the more expensive ones (Garmin, etc.) is needed.
