This video reminds me of my first experiences with sailing... My first "sailboat" was an old homemade kayak, and my Mom & Dad converted it together into a fine craft! My Dad hand fiberglassed the hull; made the leeboards and rudder of fine varnished Philippine mahogany wood, made the mast, boom and all the necessary rigging for it!(He was a machinist;skilled in mill work, and My Mom was skilled at the.sewing machine...Together, They made the frail kayak into a fine sailboat, with a beautiful black & white Nylon sail!!) And she sailed very well! I enjoyed many hours of sailing with her!

I sailed the length of Loch Ness with that rig in a day, which was 22-miles. The winds were fairly light though and could have sailed further in stronger winds.

This is what I imagined it could be in my mind, but I haven't quite experienced yet. Nice to see what's possible if you put your mind to it. Certainly adds more possibility, if you've got a lake, for example with no boat ramp, or if you don't have a sailboat. Some like to build sailboats, others like to sail. This is for people who like both. Excellent job!

It's an ok video if you watch it with the sound muted. The soundtrack is REALLY distracting.

Sometimes, but not on every meet and it would be just for fun as each sailing canoe is different with different type & size sails.

Hi, The leeboard is around 3-foot long with just over 2-feet below the water. I bought it from Solway Dory. Google them. It is adjustable & needs to be because when you reef the sail, you change the centre of pressure & the wind will push the canoe port or starboard. Tilting it fore or aft trims the canoe. Many prefer a rudder, but a few still use a paddle to steer. My Venture Ranger 16 canoe has a lot of freeboard & is quite dry. Google "the song of the paddle" & find the sailing section.

Do you use a symmetrical leeboard? What do you think about using one of each side?

Awesome, loved it. I have built a trimaran similar to canoe sizes. I like your leeboard setup. May I ask what depth the board goes in the water. Also when on a Starboard tack does it tend to lean outwards away from the hull. Otherwise looks great.

Thanks. The leeboard is approximately 3 feet below the waterline. Yes it does lean outward, though as you know, if you allow the boat to lean when tacking, you are probably carrying too much sail and it's time to reef in. ;) I have seen sailing canoes with a leeboard on both sides, but can be more difficult to setup. A swinging leeboard allows you to setup the trim based on the sail position so that the canoe points to windward if hit by a big gust, reducing the risk of capsizing.

Great stuff Steamerpoint. I particularly liked the gust at 11.29. Your rudder seems to to waggle a lot, why is that?

It was produced by someone I know and so does not attract the copyright issues or KZread adverts, which they always add when they recognise the music! I now only use Vimeo for my videos as they don't mind what music you use. Visit Vimeo and search for my videos under "Steamerpoint" :-)

  • @steamerpoint

My rudder is not that big, plus the tiller was extended and is now around 4 to 5 feet long, so it is very light at my end. I can throw the tiller around quite a lot without a huge movement of the canoe at the back end. Last year I moved up to a 44 square foot sail (The one in this video is only 35 sqr ft) and I have just finished making a a 65 squ/ ft sail for lighter winds! I no longer use KZread. My latest 19 videos are on vimeo. Search for my channel on vimeo using word "Steamerpoint"

I particularly like these two videos: vimeo.com/64178144 and vimeo.com/64106843. :-) In the latter video, while it appears that I am not sailing that fast compared to the wind surfers, the canoe is maxed out in those conditions with the outriggers sinking and me hiking right out, then note how small the sail is reefed down to.

Not sure, probably 5 or 6 mph. My 7-sqr/meter, 22 ft tall mast and sail with outriggers and hiking out planks really gets me flying, but this my earlier setup is fun and very capsizable. :-)
