This is one of the funniest ships in sci-fi to me. It's a Mormon temple/generational colony ship, turned the largest cueball ever constructed, turned barely functional warship, turned space station at the center of an extradimensional netherspace. There's no other ship I can think of with such a wacky history.

I suspect if the ship had been allowed to continue under construction till completion, we would have seen a lot more green on the interior floor of the drum. Would have looked like a modern city or whatever built on the inside, just as with any large colony station typically depicted of similar style. For example, the interior of the core of Babylon 5.

About the elevators can be explained very easily. I believe that you simply use linear induction motors. This type of motor is split up, you have magnets in the vehicle you want to move, in this case the elevator car. And then you have electro-coils in the rails. If you now create a magnetic field in the coils, you can get the vehicle to move. This is completely free. A German elevator company is already working on elevators that run on rails and use linear induction motors. So you don't need a rope anymore and you can build the elevators as high as you want and let them run sideways. You can only build elevators up to a certain height because the ropes start from a walking length and start to break their own weight. You are currently testing the new lifts so that it is safe enough. I believe that they simply use magnetic fields on the ship to keep the elevator in the desired position.

I think the giant hollow drum was supposed to have a living space in it when the ship was completed which makes sense since the Behemoth would house not only the original crew but their children and grandchildren also they probably would have had inessential things like movie theaters and museums since it was supposed to function like a small town.

I am trying to visualize the exterior of Medina Station described in book 7:: "Outside of the drum section two structures ran the entire length of the ship from the engineering deck aft of the drum to the ops deck in the bow. They housed machinery, conduit, and a pair of elevators for moving from one zero-g section to the other without passing through the drum itself. Bobbie and Clarissa planned to use one of them to climb the station to the comm array on the nose, and back down to the Laconian ship docked at the stern" So exterior elevators from bow to stern going around and over the rotating drum?!

A good overview of the ship from the perspective of the TV Series. In the books, there is only one elevator in the Nauvoo/Behemoth/Media Station, the one that runs from the engineering section to ops. Book 3 describes in good detail how the transition happens from the drum section to the rotating drum, it is basically a long winding ramp from the spin gravity to the float of either of the end sections. The parts that you were showing of "Ops" from season 4 isn't actually ops, it is the commander's office as Drummer said. I don't think that the production company put the 3d projection into the center console in season 3 due to the costs and the fact that it was, at the time, a "final" season for the series.

There's supposed to be another elevator system along the spine near the artificial sun light source but we never see it used in the series. Another thing is the drum is much thicker then portrayed in the series, I think there's like at least 3 decks of thickness to it (owing to the redundancy built into the design). Never explicitly explained those were cattle pens being used as the brig. I'd have to read the third book again, I don't think the elevator does that dogleg bend at the aft of the ship. I could swear those outside elevators were mere redundancy when the central spine elevator didn't work or for emergency.

Like you said all they basically did was bolt weapons on a hull not made for this. But with the habitat space, growing areas, schools etc. This would have made a great place to have the belters step up a rung on the social ladder. Strap those guns to vessels that could actually maneuver them.

Courtesy u/Bandit22 on reddit- Think of a bicycle wheel, axel and frame. The artificial "sun" in the drum is on a shaft (the axel) that runs through the center of the ship and is connected to the command, engineering and external elevator (the frame) which are all fixed together. The drum (wheel) rotates around the shaft and inside the command/engineering/elevator framework which don't move. If you Google image search "expanse nauvoo" there's a 3D computer render in greyscale that shows fairly well how the fixed-point framework encompasses the rotating drum.

I think the bridge of the Nauvoo/Behemoth is also the Bridge of Medina station. However as Medina station the commander spends more time in an administrative office overlooking the interior of the drum instead of on the bridge. Also note, the members of The Church of Jesus Christ: Later Day Saints intended to cover the interior surface of the drum with several meters of arable soil. They intended to farm on the ship maintaining a supply of livestock and plants for food and to supplement the life support systems.

Yeah, that's why I tried not to use the word bridge there but because we hadn't seen that office previously I assume it was put in or at least redesigned following the ship being renamed to Medina Station. And because the table console in that office seems to work just as the one in the bridge does and play the same role, I referred to it as the same console. Though, as I said in the video, I'm not sure if it's software is necessarily new or we just hadn't seen it before.

@@GenerationFilms Not a criticism just my thoughts on the matter. I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Later Day Saints and the office reminded me a lot of a Bishop or Stake Presidents officer which is why I think it was always there just not being used by the Belters. I need to read the books but the belters really ought to start growing things in Medina Station it would save then a lot of energy and strain on the stations life support, might even improve their health. They don't need to spin it at the intended speed but even if slower and with less simulated gravity it would help them.

If i where the OPA I would have called it Ziz instead of Behemoth. Being that Behemoth is the great monster of the Earth and Ziz belongs to the sky. Also the habitation drum is meant as a farming environment it needs the Space (plus it helps the psychology of the crew) Below the surface though are many stacked Decks. The Drum is essentially Central Park with the rest of the structure being the city where people live and work. This would also make it very easy for a black market or terrorist group to function somewhat unknown in a relatively finite space

Most elevators right now are based exclusively on gravity and pullies, but in space and in 3 dimensions that doesn't really function, you could go up, but down and side to side that's not going to happen without gravity or massive engineering. However if you were to use magnetic rails properly you could make gravity pretty meaningless, changing direction would be hard but not impossible especially with a system of electromagnets that you can turn on and off based on where you're going on the ship

I'm disappointed Season 5 hasn't really touched on the Behemoth or what's going on on the other side of the ring. And you're forgetting that drum is a giant air reserve. Let alone sanity for passengers.

There's no reason the elevators shouldn't work but as you got closer to the centre of the ship you would get less gravity until you reached the centre point around which the ship rotates to simulate gravity. At this central point there would be no gravity unless the vessel was accelerating then the apparent gravity would be felt in the direction of the ships aft.

My uninformed guess is the elevators would be moved by linear induction motors. That would eliminate the need for motors in the elevator cabins.

How the Mormons were going to maneuver their massive colony ship into a parking orbit around their new world in Tau Ceti system without the benefit of maneuvering thrusters remains an open question. One feature not discussed is the command deck escape pod, aka the Tycho Corporation recovery fleet command vessel which has remained tethered to the top of Nauvoo/Behemoth/Medina since it was salvaged drifting in deep space after being evaded by Eros. The command ship is presumably being kept as a contingency measure to allow officers and command deck personnel to evacuate in the event of catastrophic damage or systems failure. The personnel elevators appear to function by means of maglev tracks rather than servomotors, pulleys, and counterweights, as befitting "the most advanced ship in history."

Wait, just spotted a wtf. (I think) Assuming that the bridge operates on the same idea of "thrust is down" why didnt it have provisions for when its not under thrust, like when its spinning its habs for gravity? Or for that matter, why didnt the barrel have fixtures to work for either direction? It theoretically should have been designed like the flip ship, w everything able to operate in 2 90deg diff positions. Edit. Thinking about it, maybe the size of the ship would allow a secondary "spin bridge" for when its not under thrust. But the lack of provisions everywhere else i think stands.

In the series the LDS gave up the Navuo pretty easily, I guess they were tricked by Fred and Miller that there was a nuclear leak. The Mormons historically did have security when they settled across the US, they had some noted massacres with both native Americans and non believers. So I'd imagine that they'd have security personnel and facilities for wayward members as they took the big trip. The series mentions court action with alsort of jurisdictional issues but also imagine that some western type believers would get some gunships and try retake the Behemoth at some stage. A Dick Wickfare type would make a great captain, is Timothy Olyphant available?

On then TV show, I hardly saw any Mormons. If they have the resources to finance their own Generation ship, would that make them a pretty powerful faction in the Expanse universe? I'm surprised this didnt produce some sort of mormon faction or separatist offshoot that would try to get it back by force, or at least retaliate.
