    The focus on limitation that you identified early in the video is key. Too often people criticize the OP-1 for its limitations and high price, but that’s the point of the device. If all you wanted was pure, logical functionally for reasonable money the OP-1 should have never been a consideration. Teenage Engineering is a DESIGN company, and well designed items are indeed functional but they are also honest. They do not attempt to do things that they are not supposed to.

    I agree. To anyone who says the OP-1 Field is an overpriced toy that makes no sense to buy when compared to other less costly and more functionally friendly pieces of gear, I say not for me. I completely understand the sentiment. But I’ve gotten so much value from its workflow that I could never compare it to anything else.

    Mixing during creation is such a great workflow and is by far my preferred method. I think it is a very underrated workflow and I'm glad to see someone else tackle this approach. With the mixing tools available in the OP-1 (and most other hardware grooveboxes), you really can get a great mix (without a DAW or extra processing) if you know what you are doing. I don't really have the skill of seeing the potential in a raw, unprocessed and unmixed sound, so I need to hear how everything fits all together in the moment (including effects). Otherwise, I find it very difficult and uninspiring to build my tracks.

    Using the OP-1 reminds me of the time I used to make complex music using a cassette 4-track and a bunch of stuff that wasn't supposed to be used, like shoes in a dryer for drums. That is, it forces me to engage the part of my brain that spawns creativity and looks for interesting ways to solve artistic problems, and that's why I love it. It made me fall in love with making music again, and that's why, after being into synths and music since the late 80s, it's still the best instrument I've ever owned.

    FYI if you turn off all master effects (eq, fx, drive) and max out input volume, you can internally resample tracks and it will come out to exactly the same volume as whatever you put in. This can let you bake effects on top of existing recordings. Or if you wanna get really creative you can try recording master effects on to tracks in reverse (shift+record then shift+play). Opens up a lot of creative options!

    Great video! Being an OP-1 nerd I always look for this kind of workflow exchanges, so thanks a lot 😂! One thing about what you said, IIRC, when you bounce a track onto another, you don’t need to match the gain level that was on the track at the time of recording but just bump it up 100%, if you turn it down, you get it quieter… the reason is simple: you silence the track that receives the others, and recording on it “what you hear”, and you want it at 100% gain, if you don’t do that, it will result in something quieter because you’re recording at -x% of the original volume. This can be also used as a last resort gain correction, painful as you said, but at the end of the day we’re trying to make songs on something that hates us 😅 and loves us. I’ve subscribed, I am SUPER INTERESTED in the editing video, please do that! I always end up losing my mind in thinking about how I could effectively postproduce a track that has multiple sounds on it, please share your insights!

    Awesome :) Have really enjoyed a lot of the music you've made with this little beastie, and not just because it's good music "for an OP-1" - just good music! It does harken back to an earlier era of recording, something I was too young to do back then, 4 track portastudios... but then you'd mix those levels coming off the tape as it recorded into your master two track tape. So such luxury as per-track lift and drop then though, even more limitation. Mic placement is super key and people starting out often miss that entirely, so I appreciate your focus on that in this video too. Can't put a mic where it looks right, I mean maybe that's a good start... gotta listen through the headphones to what the mic is picking up, and make your adjustments that way. That's something I thought you might mention and didn't see, use headphones when recording to hear what the mic is picking up. Anyway, really enjoyed this one, thanks :)

    I do a lot of songwriting on my op1f. I typically mix as I go but find I use out in a ton and layer. Now that shift drop is in the workflow I’ll usually try to balance on the way in, but I still use the out in to apply eq and maybe light glue compression as well as balance and panning. Also a great place to add any volume automation. Then I’ll shift over a bar, drop the recorded track, reset the master chain and work on the next part of the arrangement. I’ll use a light bit of compression on the master sometimes as a mix bus as well.

    Q: I got an OP-1 the other day - no quantising(!?) , and no undo for recording!? Ugh. If that's "good" because 'limitations inspire creativity', then where do you draw the line? Why not just write acoustic guitars based songs, sing along, and record the entire (one-take) into your phone?

  • @NovakTheEnjoyer

    @NovakTheEnjoyer

    I hear you, dude. The only reason why it’s justified for me is the application of sampling and synth stuff. Drums* The editing sucks for songwriting. It’s made for loops and beats, but it has made me take a more “splash paint on the wall” approach. Way different than how I work in a DAW. It’s all so immediate and all in one place. As for quantizing, you have sequencers for that to play both synths and samples with. IMO, the lack of quantization allows for the human element that is so important in the music I love. That’s style baby. I hope you have fun with your OP1 despite the drawbacks! It took be buying it twice to actually commit. Returned it the first time because I didn’t get it. This time it set me free.

    I love this. I just got the CM-15 and I have some thoughts about the difference between it and the onboard mic. I think there are definitely different tools for the job depending on what you’re trying to do. Would love to try the Zoom. It might be time for me to start experimenting because I do rely heavily on mic recording. The onboard mic has been such a fun challenge to master. I like the idea of carrying less and staying as minimal as I can, so discovering different ways to make it do what I want has payed off huge. I appreciate the comment, and thanks for watching! ✌🏼

    Hi Novak; I love your music and your videos which as a recent OP-1 Field owner I am watching with great interest. I wanted to ask you how you use the OP-1 Mixer when recording your guitar or synths. At what levels do you keep the tracks in the Mixer when recording? All at 99%, 80% or less? I hope I explained myself correctly. Thank you

  • @NovakTheEnjoyer

    @NovakTheEnjoyer

    9 ай бұрын

    Alessandro, thank you for watching! I typically have my mixer maxed out at 99 across the board when I start. I usually don't mess with that until I get about 1/3 of the way through the jam when I feel like I have enough material in there. First I like to play with the compressor to see what it does before I start turning things down, but I eventually find a balance between all 4. That is to say that if every channel is at 99, and one sounds too quiet, then I turn the other 3 down to find the sweet spot. There is no specific reason why I do this, lol. Where do you like to set it? Now that you mention it, it's probably a really good idea to start at 60 across all the channels to have some head room. 60 is where I usually start to hear a big shift in volume. I'm just not sure about how that affects the compressors performance. I'll try this on the next one. Thanks for the comment!!

    dude you are a very funny guy! what i didnt know was the vocoder thing. Basically you are not able to record with an effect except vocoder which i (dumpfkcer) was not aware of. And the m1 and m2 effect when pressing it and at the same time recording something via microphone does not help at all it will always record without any effect. is there any possiblity to record with a high pass filter and reverb at the same time via the microphone (i tried with m1 button for high pass and in the vocoder i had reverb) but it recorded only the reverb on the vocoder "slot" whatever but i could record it on album and then on tape but that isnt very pleasant anyways i am awaiting your videos and left a sub ! cool man

  • @NovakTheEnjoyer

    @NovakTheEnjoyer

    Thanks for watching! Yeah, I haven’t been able to find a way to record with two onboard effects happening simultaneously. The only thing that I can think of is bouncing, or re-sampling what you’ve recorded. In other words, record your voice with the Reverb, and then re-sample it with a master effect like the Nitro filter turned on. The only other option would be to run your vocals through a pedal before going into the OP-1.
