Ontario Steam Trains | Steam Memories of Ontario

Rail Innovations 1988 VHS Tape
Steam Memories of Ontario, Relive the final years of regular steam power in Canada's second largest province. The superb 16mm colour footage taken by well known Canadian rail photographer W.H.N. Rossiter along the mainlines and branchlines of Canadian National and Canadian Pacific features a wide variety of motive power working both freight and passenger assignments.
Along with the visual memories we've added a most interesting and entertaining narration. It's great listening as five railroaders relate their experiences, both good and bad during the glory days of steam. These men actually worked on and ran many of the locomotives featured, and their tales provide a lively insight into the days when steam was king.

My father was locomotive foreman at Brockville when I was growing up and I got to meet both Bobby Cole and Bruce Kearney, both fine gentlemen who actually let me pull the throttle and run the stoker on 6218 when I was a spare board hostler while in college. It was good to hear their voices again.

So glad I found this. I recorded this episode years ago on dvr from "Trains & Locomotives" on RFD TV but lost all those recordings when I switched service. Great stories from these two old heads. Those guys worked hard for their living.

I wasn't expecting such a great commentary. So many of the stories are on subdivisions and trackage of the existing GO network which is especially amusing as a GO conductor. The story of the Mountain class 6023 with the exploding water glass was wild to imagine. The steam era was certainly cool but hearing these stories makes me grateful to work with diesels. Though I wish that either 6167 or 6213 were brought back into service for Niagara Falls excursions. I'm sure there would be huge interest in taking that particular train. It would be a tourist attraction by itself!

I used to drive along that stretch of hwy 2 between Trenton and Cobourg several times a week, I have a feeling not much has changed in the rivalry between CP and CN, you can still see freights neck and neck tooling along, just that there is twice as many on the CN line. I live near Port Hope now and for every train on the CP trestle you can count 3 on the CN trestle including Via units. There used to be stories from when the old CPR north mainline through Glen Tay Kaladar, Tweed Havelock and Peterborough on to Toronto was still carrying passengers, the CPR would pull out of Ottawa and the CNR would too at the same time and it was a race, go like hell and the trains would pull into Union Station minutes apart with shell shocked ptsd passengers from the rough breakneck ride. Sometimes CPR won the race, sometimes CNR.

Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent photography job enabling viewers to better understand what the orator is describing. Remember the " Singing Break Men 🎸🎶 Jimmie Rogers whom was a genuine break men. ( Illinois Central ) R.R. Till changing careers to a singing entertainer career (1926 thru 1933 ) most memorable song " Break Man's Blues 😭 ". Presentations like this one. Enabling viewers to better understand what it's actually like being an engineer/break man. Year in and year out.

It costs approximately 3.5 times the running and maintenance cost to run a steam engine compared to running a conventional diesel locomotive. If a group of investors were to start running a steam-engine passenger train from Toronto to Montreal, would people pay the one-way ticket of $230 for a steam train ride, while the diesel service ticket was only $65 each way?
