Ontario Knife Company Rat Model 1 With D2 Steel And Carbon Fiber Handle Scales

This is a little overview of a couple of the new versions of the Ontario Knife Company Rat Model 1 Folding Knife with D2 Tool Steel Blades. One of them is a limited edition with carbon fiber handle scales and the other is a non-limited edition with black nylon scales. I'm very impressed that OKC has new versions of the Rat 1 with a nice blade steel upgrade from AUS8 to D2 and the price remains very reasonable keeping the Rat 1 an excellent EDC folding knife value. ... I am speculating that the D2 versions of this knife will become widely available in the near future because the black handle version is not a limited edition. Further, there are quite a few videos in languages I don't speak regarding the D2 versions going back 6 months from the date of posting this. I am only speculating, so if you're interested in getting a D2 version, you should probably visit knifeworks and get one soon in case I'm wrong ;)
Ontario Rat 1 stonewhashed D2 blades in carbon fiber handle scales are starting to appear on Amazon amzn.to/2eb2zNB

    My first knife was a rat 1 in aus 8 which I still love to carry. Just ordered the d2 with carbon fiber. It will probably be my new edc. I have about 10 other knives but always come back to the RAT 1. It's nice to be able to use a $50 knife for every day tasks over a $150 knife.

    I like the D2 version of this knife so much that I bought versions of it for nearly every living relative I have.

    Just ordered the carbon fiber d2 version a few hours ago, still available surprisingly. Already have a few aus8 versions but those won't get used once the new one gets here

    +PkwyDrive13 I'm glad you were able to get one. They showed out of stock the day I received mine and then on the 27th they showed back in stock limit two per customer. I was really surprised. KnivesGunsAndGear got #500/800 and mine a week later was 303/800 so I assumed they were selling them in order top to bottom and didn't have many left. Yesterday, I saw a post in one of the knife forums of one in the 700s the fellow received Wednesday, so I guess they tossed them all in a bin and they're going out in a much more random manner than I thought. ... You're going to love this knife! I don't know if you intend it for collection or carry, but either way, you'll be happy. thanks for watching!

    +Essential Gear & Useful Skills Yeah I'm glad I found it and was able to grab one before they're gone, but I have a feeling they might continue to make them and will no longer be limited after a while. I plan on using mine for sure unless they do actually stop producing it. I'll let you know what number I get!

    +Essential Gear & Useful Skills Yeah I'm glad I was able to grab one, I am surprised by the heft of it, I was expecting it to be lighter than my standard models but it seems a little more hefty

    Excellent video. I keep waiting for the D2/CF to be released again on KW but it's still not in yet, even though KW mentioned coming back in September, with it already being October.

    This will make some folks excited and other folks less so because they are hoping (like you seem to be?) for a D2 Rat1 with CF scales: There are photos of a D2 Rat2 starting to float around. If I'm guessing/betting, I'd say KW will have a D2 Rat2 with CF before there's another D2 Rat1 in CF. ... Even though my guess was right that the D2 Rat1's would get to other vendors, I am only guessing and I have no first hand knowledge... But, my guess is based on exactly the same info that my last guess was based on. One of the fellows who did a RAT1 D2 video months ahead of it showing up (and the video is in a language I don't speak or read) seems to be the source of the D2 Rat2 photos that are starting to circulate. ... If a D2 Rat2 with CF appears at KW or anywhere else, I'll buy two ;)

    No - waiting for KW to have the Rat 1 again in D2/CF. They told me they would have another shipment in September now September has come and gone and still no R1 in D2/CF. Oh well, hopefully soon :-)

    Have you had any issues with rust on the D2 blades of these knives?

  • @betweenfiveandseven

    @betweenfiveandseven

    None what so ever. I bought a total of 9 of them. Two I had engraved and one is the limited edition in this video. Those 3 don't get used, so I suppose they aren't examples that might be really susceptible to rust or other problems. One of the remaining 6 is my 'truck knife' (it's the first thing you'd see if you opened the toolbox on my truck... it gets used a lot and is often exposed to temperature and humidity changes) and the other 5 were gifts for family members and a friend. Both of my kids and my buddy EDC theirs. No problems that I'm aware of. ... Why do you ask? Are other folks reporting rust problems? If so, I might put a little oil on the limited edition and tell the folks I gave the engraved ones to to do the same.

    The Rat 1 in D2 steel is a custom order made for Blue Ridge Knives wholesaler or at least thats what Ontario Knife company told me when I asked them about getting one from them.

    The Ontario is so, so far better than that Benchmade, not even a close comparison.

  • @betweenfiveandseven

    I have trouble agreeing with your opinion regarding the Benchmade 710 vs the Rat 1 D2... It's hard to compare the two at all besides the blade steel since they have absolutely nothing else in common. Particularly impossible to compare is a drop point (rat 1) to a clip point (710 is a modified clip pt) blade. The drop point is pretty appropriate for tasks like skinning... the clip point is good at puncturing things so it makes something like cleaning a fish easy. A drop point is excellent for hogging out a notch for your bow drill hearth board. The clip point is a way better tool to do something like stab an attacker in the neck. … We could go on and on and on about what is more appropriate for which blade style, but at the end of the day, they are too different to say one is superior to the other without defining "superior for which task".
