    Loved the drive. Especially through the 418 and the end of the 407 there. Beautiful sky, nice open roads, power lines in the background, and away from the urban cities. Great music as well!

    @@dennisdeng3045 there isn't really a toll-free section of the 407. It's just that the toll gantries are set back well from the actual 35/115 interchange. The same is true at the western end of the 407 ETR. The toll gantries are situated near the Dundas Street interchange, a few kilometres east of the QEW/403 -- but I wouldn't say that the 407 ETR has a toll free section.

Even found a few really interesting things in my home city of Sudbury I wanted to share on the site (a couple of hilariously wrong signs that pretty much no one besides us roadgeeks would get!). I'm insanely grateful that Cameron Bevers is still maintaining his site, though. That said, I'm still a huge fan of yours. I've always felt that Ontario has some of the best roads in all of North America, and definitely in Canada. Deciding whether to put Alberta or Québec in second place is tricky; Alberta has some great quality roads around Calgary and Edmonton (and the QEII Highway between them is great), but Québec has an extensive network of autoroutes to rival Ontario's 400-series highways. Probably a decade ago I would have definitively said Québec, but the high-quality ring roads around Calgary and Edmonton are starting to make Alberta and Québec seem as if they could be tied, though I would still give Québec a slight lead for the extensiveness of their autoroute network. That said, some of the aging autoroutes around Montréal (eg. the A-40 and A-15/Décarie) are problematic in my mind, whereas many of Alberta's highways are a lot newer and very high quality. I also feel British Columbia does pretty good with their roads as well (especially considering the rugged terrain outside of the Lower Mainland/Greater Vancouver area), in addition to having the longest continuous freeway in Western Canada (TCH-1 and the Coquihalla Highway form a continuous freeway from NW of Vancouver all the way to Kamloops). I would rank them as follows: ON -> QC -> AB -> BC The only problem with Ontario's roads, in my mind, is that the Trans-Canada (ON 17) in northern Ontario should be 4 lanes; furthermore, in at least a few places in northern Ontario, that highway is a single point of failure for the entire Canadian road network.

  • @AsphaltPlanet1

    @AsphaltPlanet1

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'd generally agree with that assessment. Quebec has invested a lot in their highway network over the past decade or so, and it's much better than it once was. Quebec's urban roads still aren't my favourite, as you say. Alberta has also invested heavily in their roads, and the ring road around Calgary in particular is definitely one of the best designed roads in Canada. I'd probably put BC somewhere behind Nova Scotia or New Brunswick though. I find BC's highways to generally be underbuilt.

    418 is mostly empty during it's time even after construction. What about 412? How's the decongestion of 412 compared to 418? I know some 400-series highways are congested while 401 is the most congested. 407 is always light traffic because drivers must pay to bypass 401.

    The toll rates for the provincial section of the 407 aren't that dissimilar from the toll rates for other suburban toll roads in places like California or Texas. There are certainly locations that have cheaper tolls, but there are also places (such as Pennsylvania) that have way higher tolls than either of the provincial segments of the 407/412 or 418.

    They are supposed to add a fourth lane between the 412 and Brock Street as part of the current project to replace the Brock Street overpass. I don't know why it hasn't been opened (and honestly it's been a while since I have driven the 401 through there, so I'm not up to date on the construction), but that will happen in the next few months. But that lane is just an auxiliary lane between the 412 and Brock, nothing through the 412 interchange is planned for the near term. The 401 is scheduled to be widened to ten lanes through Oshawa (five per direction). Aside from construction at Simcoe Street starting next year, there aren't any firm timelines beyond that. I'd expect an overpass replacement at Harmony to follow in the years that follow Simcoe Street however.
