I've passed through Norfolk County many years for beach trips to Long Point, and over time I've found many of these Tobacco fields have given way to Ginseng ones; the government is far more tolerant and the clientèle (China) is plentiful. How times change.
Around about 1949/1950, my father was working for a gold mine in northern Quebec for 75 cents/hour, when his friends in southern Ontario wrote him to come on down to the hamlet of Copenhagen in Elgin County, and work picking tobacco for 80 cents/hour! Tobacco worth more than gold!!
i knew a guy from quebec who did this in mid 80's. he said worst thing about job. everything stunk of nicotine. hard to wash bad smell out of clothes even.
