i liked the realistic facial features...the smiles lines on their faces

"Taeko has so much love and warmth for her 5th grade memories, even though they are all not happy memories. There’s a wisdom and understanding to the stories she’s telling. She’s able to separate the version of herself she used to be from the version she is now. Taeko refuses to let us pity her, instead she wants us to enjoy these memories for what they are and how they shaped her." You just explained to meaning of the film and it’s honestly such a lovely message. We should learn to embrace the memories we made from our past, good memories and even bad memories. Because those memories make us who we are today. ❤️

Ending sequence of this movie is pure gold. ❤

I've seen almost every ghibli film. I learnt many lessons from each one. This specific one rather made me realize a question and I teared up a bit. I'm an emotional person and what I asked myself struck my heart. "I wonder what my young self think about my life now?" Makes me want to go back in time but not to change my mistakes but rather ask my young self what he wants to be when he grows up, because to be honest man? I kind of lost it.

I can relate to this.

Miyazaki crafts beautiful and magical stories, but Takahata brings a level of maturity and relatability that can touch anyone.

I've seen a couple people talk about the movie and how they don't really see the chemistry between the couple but in my opinion I felt it, I don't know if its just me but when they where talking together every scene I felt like if flowed so well and naturally.

I think the goal of the film was not perfect chemistry. It is a more realistic portrayal of a typical person.

This has been my favorite for years. I'm lucky enough to have an old compilation of studio Ghibli movies from before Disney acquired the rights.

This is my fav Ghibli movie❤️ I love the feeling of nostalgia and the story of japanese countryside from the point of view of the farmers. I would mention the music too because they used folklor music from different countries 🥰 The ending is so precious too, I just love the whole movie!☺️❤️

My personal favourite Ghibli movie, was a complete punch in the gut

Only Yesterday is actually the first Ghibli film I watched when I was about 9-10 and I absolutely fell in love with it to a point where I rented the movie again and again and again 😂

Every ghibli movie has a video on YT claiming it's a "forgotten/underrated masterpiece" lol.

I love this movie, but I didn't know that Disney scuttled it because of the conversations about periods! That's so sad. They used to produce and affiliate with a wide variety of films, both for children and stuff more for adults. I'm glad that it's available through them now.

Especially with their messaging today, and all the sexual innuendos throughout the years. Hiring pedophiles, sexual pictures and talk of Illuminati in cartoons, promoting drag in kids ect…. Ghibli is the ONLY reason my family still gives Disney any time at all.

@@BarefootInAK - Yeah, my kids are going to be raised on Ghibli 100% over Disney. I don't financially support them at all anymore, because of how much political and sexual stuff they're putting in childrens' movies now (and more subtly throughout the years). Not to mention how for the last 10+ years they've turned completely away from making high-quality content and new stories, in favor of the money they can get from spinoffs, sequels, and live action remakes. I'll show my kids all the old classic _great_ Disney films, but I'll find them on DVD in thrift stores, _just_ so I don't have to directly give Disney money.

@@milo_thatch_incarnate I don’t think it was a Disney film but I just got done rewatching “The Borrowers” from the early 90’s I think… the memories lol! “The House of the Lost on the cape is another one i just found the other day, good show!

@@BarefootInAK - I'll have to check those out! My favorite childhood films to revisit are still Don Bluth's films: The Secret of NIMH, An American Tale, and The Land Before Time especially. Just pure good stories.

I tried what I can to watch this movie because it looks so calm and beautiful.

Cool video, I love Only yesterday, it's my favourite Ghibli movie and Takahata's magnum opus. If you want something similar in terms of slice of life you should definitely watch 'Anne of Green Gables', the series Takahata directed before Ghibli. It's simpy... the best coming of age ever watched lol

This might be an unpopular opinion but I honestly found her family very dismissive (excluding the grandma a bit ) like they often give a silent treatment to her and I found that very toxic. I get that she can be spoiled and stuff but its like they are often so emotionally distant , like I mean sometimes they do support her but only if she proved it or help her with basic things but thats just that. But then when whenever she spoke her mind or has more deep questions, they often dismiss her or told to shut it but I get that it was the 60s at that time and probably normalized but still I find it so annoying. Compared to other ghibli parents such as kiki delivery or neighbor totoro ( who were very wholesome and tried getting along with what went on with their children’s thoughts and did comfort them ) , this one probably was pretty sad like I get this still happens everywhere ( mostly asian households) but just sad.

I felt exactly the same and had a rather strong reaction to the way they treated her sometimes. Like when the dad slaps her for the first time just because she ran out the house with no shoes, I was like "are you fricking kidding?" Are you that emotionally incapable that you just walk up and hit her like that, not even scold her?" He seemed calm and even called her "my little bear" or along those lines as an endearment (at least in the dub) just before, so that slap just felt so out of place and unnecessary for something seemingly so trivial. And the way her sisters made such a big deal out of Taeko scoring low in a test, saying stuff like "should she get her IQ checked?" "She got dropped as a baby, so she's getting dumber and dumber!" Again felt like such an exasperated reaction. I get the time period and culture places more importance on high scores, but still, reacting like that is bound to cause any kid to develop insecurities and self-worth problems that can become deeply rooted and stay there as time goes on. And the parents being emotionally distant is no help, especially the father. A lot of times I felt he might as well not be there with how much more invested in his newspaper he seemed to be. And one last thing that bothered me was how pushy the elders seemed to be about the idea of Taeko marrying Toshio, to the point of even causing Taeko to run away. That just ended up repelling me to that idea and vouching for it _not_ to happen. It's just that after her sister and even Toshio himself questioned why she's still single, she made it clear she thought there was nothing wrong with being single and liked her independence, so I was kinda hoping she would stick to that and not cave into societal's expectations, but I can get if she genuinely likes Toshio she would do it out of her own volition anyways. I just didn't like the grannies' pushy expectations being appeased including all the others expecting her to get married. The movie had a lot of cute and even tear jerking moments like the ending scenes with her and her past self, but those toxic and iffy moments are what prevent me from fully appreciating every aspect of the film.

@@BarefootInAK Eh, I'd say societies expectations especially for women back then were much more rigid and narrow-minded. Nowadays they have more freedom but I agree such attitudes are still way too prominent especially in certain cultures, so there's still a long way to go.

C'mon if you are not deep into Ghibli is very unlikely that you'll know about this film in the west. I know about it because I'm a cinephile, but most people aren't.

They should do live action of this, directed by Hirokazu Koreeda

Yeah "forgotten masterpiece" sure is a catchy title and all that but this movie isn't forgotten. It's a Ghibli movie, they're all well known.

it's not a generally forgotten masterpiece but as the title says it's studio ghiblis forgotten masterpiece. As in other studio ghibli movies (my neighbout totoro, spirited away, howl's moving castle...) are more well known. Mostly only ghibli fans will dig up all the movies and watch them

If this film is forgotten, then everything is forgotten. Stop being stupid. You're the one living in a bubble. This is normal for 99% of movies out there. They sit there waiting to be discovered by new generations. People dont keep talking about them every day.

They have some more obscure films like Ocean Waves. That film is even more obscure. They also have more obscure shorter projects like Ghiblies, On Your Mark, and Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo.

@@HydraSpectre1138 Yeah fair enough, those aren't too well known. Especially the shorts. I've read somewhere one of them was only made to play in the Ghibli museum and nowhere else, so that one probably takes the cake.

It's a great film but I found the new dub very unengaging.

as a child who is in 6th grade, i hated this movie so much. The children was supposed to be "5th grade" but definetely does not act like 5th graders. I hate it whenever there is a movie where the main focus is children, as that movie will be directed by adults and the director has no idea how children acts, so it just results in them creating characters that does not act like a human being would, much less children. Even the best of the directors, the best they can do is make the children act like humans, but most of the time far far too young.

Great story, awful dub imo Daisy Ridley was the wrong choice. Watch the sub.
