Greg Lake had, for me, the most beautiful voice in progressive rock with Jon Anderson of Yes. Every time I hear, I cry. Like right now. It's so moving to recall my youth with such a mythical band.

I think Greg did a good job here replicating Wetton's style. I mean consider the fact he only had like a week to learn the songs and all. That is an incredible feat alone imo. Plus, in a way it's only right that Greg should have the gig singing John's parts since John replaced Greg in King Crimson.

I saw ELP in 1971, and King Crimson in 1974, and Greg Lakes voice was awe-inspiring. John Wettons voice was wonderful as well. To hear these guys sing live and the musicians play live was euphoria. RIP to both wonderful voices of Greg and John.

Greg Lake pitch-hitting here is amazing!!! As a huge fan of both ELP and Asia it was a shock when I first heard Greg singing lead for Asia in this Era. I got to see Greg in a storyteller tour in a small theater in New Bedford, MA and was so amazed about how humble he was. They filled stadiums! They wrote and recorded some of the most complex progressive music ever written. One thing Greg said at that concert in New Bedford that they wanted the fans to just enjoy music socially to share the experience of ELP in their homes with their families and friends! How honest he was about the current state of how we experience music, alone and here we are this huge concert at the Budokan in Tokyo! People shoulder to shoulder hearing, feeling and experiencing the great catalog of Asia in Asia and with Greg Lake singing lead!

In my opinion Wetton and Lake are interchangable, ironically both having their interlude with King Crimson and sounding similar. This version of Asia is 2/3 of ELP, and 2/5 of Yes (at least as far as incarnations of Drama and recent tours). All prime musicians together with a disciplined deliberate (poppish) sound.

Wetton and Lake interchangeable? Wetton could play absolute rings around Lake in the 1970s. His technical proficiency and dexterity was nothing short of staggering. Greg was "in" Asia for literally something like 2 weeks... just for this show, and as I recall the story he finally agreed to do this gig about 10 days out, after multiple money offers... until finally getting an offer he couldn't refuse, and then had to absolutely cram to learn all the songs in time for this show. It was a huge deal that MTV had been pushing for months, and they even flew a plane load of fans/contest winners over to Japan for the show, so when Wetton "flaked" out (alcohol issues, I believe) about a month before the show, the pressure to get a replacement and still make the show happen was huge. I was in my early teens and still remember watching it live on MTV, and being blown away at how good Greg was. I do remember hearing news reports of them getting a "new lead singer" in the week or two before this show and wondering WTF was gonna happen. Then Wetton resumed being in Asia shortly after this gig, as I recall.

Greg Lake had less than three weeks to rehearse and learn all the songs on this tour. Steve Howe, and John Wetton, had met their end. There was no common ground with keeping ASIA impact. Management asked Carl Palmer to ask if Greg Lake would take the gig in AISA. He did, and ASIA IN ASIA ON MTV, used this concert to promote ASIA in their zenith. However, Greg Lake lasted only during the tour, and he was done. Steve Howe departed, John Wetton came back and told Steve Howe to "Fuck off" and that was the end of ASIA. Once, John Wetton teamed up with Geoff Downs, they found ASIA again. By 1990, ASIA was back only Steve Howe was replaced by the band. ASIA did a massive concert in Russia, and recorded a live album, plus a greatest hit (ASIA Then and Now). It produced a hit with (Days Like This) which did very well in the musical charts. However, ASIA made a move to replace John Wetton with John Payne and record a new album. The John Payne era was around from (1992-1996). Once the original ASIA reformed, it was back to what made them amazing. A tour and a new album were put into the works. ASIA is--John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, and Geoff Downes. I would include John Payne, because he produced five or six ASIA albums.

Wow I had forgotten that Greg Lake replaced John Wetton and then the band was half ELP, half Yes.

Both Greg Lake and John Wetton Come from King Crimson. Alot alike. John Wetton has a more muscular Tone on the Bass. Lake more Melodlic. Love them both. R.I.P. From Wetton to Lake was Seamless. Steve Howes more POP Experiments. Prefer YES and Crimson . Seen Asia on Wettons last tour. It was great. Covered In the Court which was cool. Carl Palmer is Amazing drummer. Greg Lakes voice is Angelic.
