Thank you. I heard some podcaster recently disparage the Elvis. I was repulsed. Everybody doesn’t have to like what I like. It was the dismissal. This movie..started a love affair with Elvis I never saw coming. I’ve watched this film so so many times now. I’ve also read books and watched as much Elvis related footage as possible. The music, the the history, the intensity of Austin’s commitment…and the visual orgasm that is Baz’s film making.

I've always loved Baz and his style of film making. I've never gotten why critics hate his work so much. Not that it matters at this point. Movie critique isn't what it used to be. Elvis is, without a doubt, my fav movie of his. It's fast become one of my favorite movies of all times.

  • @LadyJenevia

I never know whether or not to classify myself as a "critic" because I feel like more often than not, I end up disagreeing with their general consensus. The idea of treating Baz Luhrmann as anything less than a brilliant artist is wild to me. The Academy couldn't even be bothered to give him a Best Director nomination when they decided to nominate Moulin Rouge in a bunch of other categories... as if HE AS THE DIRECTOR isn't the captain of the ship and the craftsmanship we see in those other categories are enhanced because of HIS VISION... Anyway, let me not go on this rant any further. It's just needless bad vibes. 😂

  • @methosimortal

    @methosimortal

@@LadyJenevia obviously you are a critic in as you are a person that analyzes movies through the lense of craftmanship and filmmaking history which, at it's core, is what film critique is. The problem is that film critics these days aren't really interested in doing that anymore, instead choosing the rather uninspired route of judging movies on their "social messages" or whether or not the studio behind it is paying them enough to say good things about their movie. that's why they get it wrong almost all the time and why film goers are no longer swayed by their opinions. it's also why the Oscars as an institution have became pretty much irrelevant. They've become an insulated, self congratulatory industry that's completely out of touch with what the customer is actually looking for. and that's partly the root of the issue they have with Baz. his movies are populist and without elitist pretentions. He makes movies that are romantic, and colorful and larger than life without ever losing the emotional core of his characters. he has more in common with the great directors of melodrama of the 30s and 40s than he does with directors working today that more often than not limit themselves and dim down their color in favor of "gritty realism". A gritty realism they have never experienced and don't really know how to portray properly. Anyway, apologies for the the tangent ... All of that to say I personally like to think of channels like yours as "movie analysis", "movie appreciation", "film making dissection" if you will ... :)))) and that's why I like it. PS: also just because I think the Oscars are irrelevant, doesn't mean I'm not rooting for Austin Butler to get the Oscar :)))) I'm contrary that way.

Very interesting remarks. The only thing that seems to be left out here and elsewhere relates to the insomnia Elvis Presley had from childhood forward. So starting back then, I think he began struggling with usage to fall asleep and stay asleep at night and then other things to be awakened. Most sources cite him starting drug usage to stay awake/fall asleep during early touring before he met Parker. But his medical history from childhood created many problems that fostered use of meds.

Lady Jenevia-as always you knocked it out of the ballpark! Great discussion of this fantastic movie about Elvis. No one has the ability to do long format commentary the way you do. I’ll never forget as a child watching him on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. Grinding and writhing. I was 8 or 9 and lightning & sexual electricity poured off the screen into me and my little best friend who watched his performance with me. It was life altering, to say the least. I had zero awareness of sexual electricity at that age-it was the early 1950s!! I was shaken and mesmerized by the image & sound of him. Baz did such a brilliant job with this movie as did everyone connected to this movie. You captured it all & I’m so glad you included your pertinent political comments too. Everything was right on the money.

LadyJenevia, such a great video! I didn't know much about Baz (I think I only watched The Great Gatsby, and only once), and learned so much about him through your video! He really seems he loves cinema and fully embraces the beauty of total artifice that other forms of art just can't do in such a grandiose manner. What an interesting director! Anyway, aside from the kudos to you, what I also wanted to add is that I had previously watched Broey Deschanel's recent video about biopics, and also mainly centered on Elvis. And, not having watched the movie myself yet, I came out of that video thinking this was not worthy putting in my 'to watch list.' And then I watched your video now and it totally changed my mind to put Elvis on my 'must watch' list! I rewatched Broey's video again after finishing yours to see why I had such different reactions from two pretty fair youtubers, that take time to do their research, and that I also personally like, about the same movie. After doing this, I think I've arrived at a couple of things. First, the fact that your video is much longer and solely focuses on Elvis, and much more tangentially on biopics in general, did a major service for the movie because it revealed a lot of things that Broey couldn't because of a choosing to do a much shorter video that did the opposite of what you did: mostly focus on biopics in general, and only tangentially on Elvis in particular. The funny thing is that, on rewatch, I think you two actually do have similarish views, but you entered into the experience with a love for Baz, whereas Broey probably didn't and already didn't seem to enjoy biopics by default. I guess my point here is that I would LOVE seeing you two do a collab focusing on Elvis and see if either of you manage to change the other's views in any particular way. Of course, taste is taste and can't be debated. But both of you, aside from good taste, also have great insights into the technicals of filmmaking and directing and I would love to see THAT discussion... Hope this made sense! Again, great video, fully lived on to the hype you announced the other day 💙💙

The thing is, I wasn't interested in "an Elvis biopic" at all on concept alone because I do think a lot of biopics are very 'rinse and repeat' in their formula for how they execute their storytelling but the fact that it was Baz doing it was what made me go, "Well okay then, I'll see it when it comes out". I had even tweeted that exact sentiment before the movie came out 😂: twitter.com/LadyJenevia/status/1495499789668352000?s=20&t=sIDP8amVYjhaYFlyqWHIxw Anyway, watch the film and feel free to watch Baz's other films too! 🥰✨

3:40 if you haven’t seen Strictly Ballroom, and love Baz’s work, absolutely see it. It’s my favourite of all of them, but Elvis absolutely competes with R+J in second place.

Oh I've ABSOLUTELY seen Strictly Ballroom. Baz takes sooooooooooo long to make new films that there's only so many projects of his to see. 😭❤️‍🔥🎞

I .... didn’t know I was a huge fan of Baz L until I had seen almost all his movies without knowing who the director is 🤣

He's just THAT iconic, everyone knows him even if they don't realise. 🥰

You had to grow up in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s to realize that Elvis was a powerful political voice but thru his music & refusal to conform. Those of us who were deemed as juvenile delinquents bc we liked Elvis, those of us who lived through desegregation of schools especially in the south know that Elvis did as much to promote desegregation as Mohammed Ali. He even refused to perform in venues that didn’t want him to bring his black back up singers.

It would be nice but the esoteric favouritism of awards shows only occasionally aligns with the type of art I favour the most so I don't really except it to win, nor do I need that portion of the industry to validate it. I love the film regardless of any of that. 😆

I love hearing such care and love for the film, and it's truly inspiring to see, and I thank you for putting it in the way that you decided to do your video, because I found it lovely. Loved the film, loved your video.

awesome archival clips and v nice that an interviewer got to ask Baz about the connection with Britney and Elvis, cool af how he calls her Brit Brit, I'm sure they've met for roles and soundtracks over the years, she's lowkey friends with alot of cool directors

I would imagine Baz knows LOADS of cool artists but he only rises out into the spotlight every few years to release a new project so people don't realise how many people love him. 🥰

Я не знала, что Strictly Ballroom это фильм Лурмана ))) обалдеть. Я смотрела его в детстве и запомнила навсегда. Но никогда не пыталась узнать кто режиссер. Вот это да!

As problematic as I find Elvis as a person, I love Baz Lurman films, even when I have to wait a long time to see them.
