    I had a 77....and I just bought a 78 ("barn find")...and you are right!!....But there where different "packages" and "trim" options, and combinations available in those days....this one has no power windows, so it was not the top of the line model,...so it was probably a dealership demo model!...just sayin!

    Brandon Crapo The thunderbirds weren't downsized until the 1980 model year. These 1977 to 1979 models were based on the LTD II platform. Not a bad car but obviously this dealer intends to overcharge as much as possible for this very scantly optioned but low mileage car.

    Ford would return to framed doors for the eighth (1980-1982), ninth (1983-1988) and tenth generation (1989-1997) cars, but that had more to do with aerodynamics and safety than road noise. The 11th gen car (2002 - 2005) was a convertible, so frameless doors were a natural for that generation car.

  • @houseofno

    @houseofno

    2 жыл бұрын

    How do you know that the previous owner didn't simply add these onto a '77? Most buyers were big fans of chrome on these cars and it's not unreasonable to assume that a car owner may have simply added this on to make the car look newer (or maybe to add more chrome)

  • @houseofno

    @houseofno

    Slightly smaller? This generation lost nearly eighteen inches in overall length compared to the previous model. By the time this car was on the drawing boards, the 1973 fuel crisis, upcoming emissions regulations (starting for the 1975 model year), as well as the very noticeable public shift in tastes to more economical cars, all combined to influence the design of these cars. The age of two to three ton cars pushing gas guzzling, 400 plus cubic inches was on its way out. The writing was on the wall for upcoming CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requiring automakers to meet annual fuel mileage quotas was coming up soon too. Suddenly, curb weight, fuel mileage, crashworthiness, and even aerodynamics all mattered to carmakers when designing new vehicles. Cars produced at the end of the 70s were a lot different from the cars that started this decade.

    Unless you can PROVE the odometer has been tampered with, I'll take the seller's word for it. It's ILLEGAL (Federal illegal, as well as illegal in every state) to tamper with a vehicle odometer or misrepresent the mileage. Provided that the mileage represents what's on the paperwork, that's good enough for me. Additionally, bad news travels fast, and it would be severely damaging to the seller's business to be accused of odometer fraud. It's rare, but not unplausible for these cars to be stowed away for years in climate controlled garages and sold during estate sales. Not every heir wants to take on maintaining a 45 year old classic car.

    "air conditioning needs a charge" = "the air conditioning doesn't work and we have no idea how to fix it." you can buy a can of refrigerant for $5 if that's all it needs.

  • @houseofno

    @houseofno

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@chieftp $5? Not likely. Unless this car has been converted to R134a (new cars starting in early 90s switched to R134a), this is an R12 car (there is a label on the compressor identifying correct refrigerant). Last time I checked, R12 was running at $50 a pound, and even that price may be out of date (present price is probably even higher). Most cars need between eight to ten pounds of this stuff, and we haven't even gotten into the labor fees involved. As for those refrigerant substitutes, don't touch them. A credible AC shop will typically test the system for leaks, and if they find traces of a refrigerant they can't identify, SHOW'S OVER. No credible shop will risk contaminating their equipment with your $5 can of garbage, and it's not cheap to have your system purged. Also there's no telling what kind of damage an unknown refrigerant substitute will do to your compressor seals. You're really going to risk thousands in HVAC repairs because you're too cheap to put a legitimate refrigerant into your system?
