I think you've hit your overview stride, Sam, very clear and thorough. Keep it up and you may be my preferred reviewer.

Well done Sam. We enjoy this game immensely. We were playing this at a game day we hosted at our local library. Onitama really got peoples attention as they walked by our table. There were a lot of people there that day because of the local school's art show. Onitama plays as good as it looks. Thanks again.

Please always wear that shirt with reviews. My son and I were cracking up with Mickey's head coming in and out of the frame. Great game and review as well.

Great review, new with this game and love it :) Question: Why are some cards movement square in red, blue ore grey. Has this any meaning? Thanks in advance and have a great day

Some of those moves remind me of shogi.

Saw this and went to BGG for the reference of other games that use this card-pattern movement, but couldn't find anything. Get the odd feeling that the game was reviewed here...

I'd be curious to know what the arrangement is between Arcane Wonders & The Dice Tower regarding the Essentials Line. Are there kickbacks from AW? I'm not implying this review was skewed at all, however, it may be a point of interest for those that watch Dice Tower reviews and are sensitive to that kind of thing. Anyway, great review, thanks for the opinion.

The Dice Tower curates this line. Because it's something that they created, they almost certainly receive compensation. I'm not sure it would qualify as a "kickback." That has a certain connotation that probably does not apply here. You're right though, they could be more transparent by opening that it is a Dice Tower Essential, and an explanation of what the Dice Tower essentials are, for people who aren't very familiar.

That's a fair comment, you're right that kickback has some negative connotations and I'll chalk that up to a poor choice of word on my part. I'd agree that reviews in need of disclosures should be very explicit, especially in circumstances where money has changed hands.

Yeah, it's technically a "royalty". I appreciate that Sam notes that. It's important to keep in mind that they aren't giving it a good review because it is a DTE game. Rather, they choose it as a DTE because they think it's a good game. I can't conceive of a scenario where they would give a bad review to a DTE game.

what about this compared to duke?

It's like comparing an appetizer to the main course. That is not to say that Onitama isn't a decent game on its own, but there's deeper strategy, a measure of uncertainty, and more variety of play to be experienced in The Duke. You can also enforce the rule that you're not allowed to look at the move pattern on the reverse side of your opponent's tiles, which can make for some interestingly tense situations. Onitama, in contrast, offers no surprises whatsoever (which, again, is not a bad thing if that's your cup of tea).

over rated too easy to end up with move card that gives a good player a guaranteed win at some point in game. Needs an updated ruleset. This is not like chess.
