Many fake gold coins float due to a lack of density. Therefore, this is ONE preliminary method you can use which is easy and free. You would need to combine this with other methods such as XRF, weighing, diameter check, acid, hallmarks etc. It is important to factor whilst other metals and coins will sink there are a large amount of counterfeit smaller gold coins that float.

Regardless if it's gold or not, it's metal... it's gonna sink to the bottom.

Hi Toby, you are right it’s metal and it will sink. However, there are a lot of fake gold that do float. This is just one minor preliminary method that can be done aswell as other testing you can consider. I do not reccomend this being the only method to consider you can also include magnetic, diameter, xrf, acid etc. The ‘float’ test is useful to test for gold mainly small coins and jewellery. Real gold is a dense metal which will sink. Whilst other metals sink too including nickle and copper, a floating coin is a giveaway sign to watch out for as many fake gold coins float due to lack of density. Im not lying to anyone and I can only explain it to you, I can’t understand it for you. Take care - Josh

The composition of rocks will of course sink. Many fake gold coins float due to a lack of density. This is just one of the many preliminary methods you can use for gold coins. A composition that is usually faked for gold is tungsten but combing this float method with a diameter and weight check, xrf or sigma it is just one of the many methods you can use

If you read my explanation or did your own research you would understand that this is one preliminary method to use as many fake coins float due to a lack of density. It’s not BS and it’s not a waste of time. It’s a method you would use amongst other testing especially for smaller gold coins. I can only explain it to you I can’t understand it for you.

Weigh and check the diameter, gold is denser than silver😁
