Thanks so much for doing that test Michael. Very helpful. My sense is that the best application for these 49” super wide monitors is when you’re trying to get as close to the performance of 3 regular HD monitors as possible, but with only 1 monitor. When you actually DO use 3 monitors however, that super wide aspect ratio backfires. My hunch is the best effect would be to use one of the nicer instrument panels available, plus three regular wide screen 50” monitors, or possibly the super wide 49” for straight ahead and two 50” monitors to flank on the sides. The fact that the 50” monitors are taller than the 49” monitor hopefully wouldn’t be an issue as you have the instrument panel occupying half of your forward-facing vision. Please see this setup used by the folks at AllSportsSystems, a maker of one of those instrument panels. Would love to hear your thoughts on this, ideally via a follow-up review video!! Thanks again and keep up the great work!! kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6uFm7uwg8WTprA.html

I'd love to watch a presentation where you had two monitors placed one above the other, the top being for the external view (those 90 degrees seems okay for me) and the bottom one with the instruments panel. Cheers.

I actually miss the days of the 2D cockpit, with it's switchable views. I used to have a front monitor showing the front view, another monitor showing the front left view, another the front right view, and a fourth monitor showing the panel in 2D! That way, there was no distortion to the instrument displays, as there was no moving camera.

I think your 3x ~60" TVs setup in 90 degrees angles is more compelling. You can get those almost for the same price as a single 49" ultra wide monitor. Plus now they make super slim bezel ones like the Hisense ones, so you only see very small seams.

I have an important question that might be increasing the use of air manager. I have been asking people with xplane10 but can apply to any simulator. In order to see 180, we use three monitors for panoramic views or 3D cockpit also but if the 3D cockpit can be remove(instruments only), then we can use head tracking with if we keep the 3D capabilities. I was told that is not possible but I found one plane that is not finish in xplane10 under experimental planes with name VAN'S AIRCRAFT. When I started, I only see the panoramic view (no instruments or cockpit) but my head tracking was working and I can control head movements in order to have realistic view of the outside. This is fantastic to combine with air manager because you can have only one monitor for the view using head tracking and the second one for air manager instruments. Using four monitors requires a lot of PC. Any idea how we can remove the cockpit with our loosing the 3d capability. Thank you.

My understanding is that the 49" ultra wide is like having two 27" regular monitors in a single chassis with no bezel between them. So, to get rid of some distortion that occurs in the "hand off" in between these 3 monitors, how would it be to use the ultra wide 49" with two 27" monitors for the side view? To follow up further on that, could a video card handle a mix of resolutions? My thought is: use the 49" ultra wide for flight sim purposes, as well as video editing (gets a wonderful long timeline on that very wide screen) and for general business multi-tasking where one might have a spreadsheet, contacts, pdfs, etc, open simultaneously, but use the two 4k side monitors for the side views with flight swimming and as primary monitors for photo editing. The 4k monitors would offer better resolution and black level for quality photo editing. Is that trying to accomplish too much from one setup? Final question in this line of thinking, does the newest Samsung super curved 49" do a better job for the windshield view and create less distortion in that transition to the two 4k side monitors used for the side views? The Samsung model I'm referring to is the Odyssey G9, which has a much more radical curve to it (1000R) and more resolution as well (5120 x 1440). Thanks very much for all your great work Michael!!

Do you have TrackIR or Tobii available to test on this monitor setup? Their documentation leads me to think they are NOT engineered for usage on these relatively rare monitor setups, and so it might be interesting to see what happens with the head-tracking when used here. That is IF you have not already taken down the monitors. I'm not suggesting it's interesting enough to justify setting everything back up AGAIN, but if you already have everything available and already in place, then it might be interesting just to see what happens.

Its very easy. Go into the Settings screen > Joystick and look at the drop down boxes on the right (see pic in link below). Now just use the hat switch in any direction and you'll see one of the boxes light up. For example you push hat left and you might see a box labelled "Do nothing" light up. Go to that box, click on it and from the drop downs select Pan Left or Glance Left etc Do this for the rest of the directions. Once done go back to the sim and test it. You can adjust speed by selecting Look left quickly etc www.x-plane.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/other-views-e1483650716352.png

The only issue I'd have with that setup is the narrow vertical FoV outside the cockpit. I'm estimating that our eyes have a natural 60-70 deg arc vertical FoV. From what you're showing us, those monitors appear to limit us to only a 20-30 deg vertical FoV.

Hi Micheal, a good video. Here are my thoughts on the use of the wide-screen monitor setup. For realism the C172 cockpit space must appear about 40 inch. Even an apparent 48 inch ie 20% increase would result in distortion with a 60⁰ per monitor setup gor 3 monitors. The wide-screen panels would give optimum results at 40⁰FOV per monitor that results in a 120⁰ overall for the setup. This however would word great for an A320 or B737 type of a setup but not for a C172. In C172 the Height of these wide-screen panels becomes an issue. One may not get the realism out of the setup even if the instrument panel is removed. One would need a 43inch IPS TV kind of a setup for a C172 sim. This would save the cost of speakers as well. For less than $200 per TV it is the Best bang for the buck. It saves the space as well. Thanks once again for the informative video.

These are great monitors but this demo shows that even with a top-notch PC, one needs to choose between a detailed and true to life scenery immersion with one monitor or a setup like this one that requires a serious reduction in scenery details to keep a smooth flight as we could see in the demo here... And if we think about it, it's a little bit strange and ironic because the purpose of 3 monitors like these is to enjoy some VFR virtual flights over detailed scenery... So personally, I choose scenery immersion in 2020. I don't think 3 monitors like these give me satisfaction especially if I have a strong PC but then I am forced to fly over dull and empty scenery that looks like what simulators used to have more than 10 or 15 years ago... And for this reason, I stay with one modest HD monitor and I use my mouse to pan :) But I can't wait to see what Vulcan can do, because a surround visual like this one can be so much fun with the immersive scenery we can get today for XP11.

What’s wrong with the super wide monitors is a lack of vertical raster height which deprives the SIM pilot of a full windshield height, low panels switches, and easier viewing access to ceiling panels. Most likely SIMmers would be happier with three 27 or 34 inch standard monitors, 2 or 4K rather than super wides seeking the thinnest bezels they can find, but don’t forget, outer monitor bezels can overlapped behind the bezels of the center monitor.

Sometime I want an invitation to Michael's playroom. Looks like Michael's has been having more fun than that Austin guy. I've often wondered what using cheap but big 4k TVs running at 1080P would look like. I played my laptop x-plane copy to our 4k TV (1080P resolution). I thought it looked more clear than my 24 inch 1080 monitors and the 50 inch screen was impressive. Alas, wife won't share.

I hook up 3 monitors and it looks ok but it slows down the sim rate to 50% of real time making a 1 hr flight last 2 hr. Not a high end computer. I would probably do better with 1 of those monitors.

Sorry Michael but because I am a committed Apple user, I am spec'ing out purchase of an Apple Mac Pro tower to work with my SAMSUNG LC49RG90SSNXZA 49-Inch CRG9 Curved Gaming Monitor [featured in this nice video] It can give resolutions as high as 5120 x 1440 @ 60 Hz & 3840 x 1080 @ 120 Hz HDMI or Display inputs. Question??? Michael do you think the following Mac Pro hardware spec's run X-Plane at its best with this monitor? 3.5GHz 8‑core Intel Xeon W processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz 32GB (4x8GB) of DDR4 ECC memory Radeon Pro W5700X with 16GB of GDDR6 memory 1TB SSD storage

It will run like a $1000 pc. Macs don't game well. A server processor is not for gaming. ECC memory is not for gaming. Radeon Pro cards are not for gaming. Go ahead and make your donation to Apple. It will be a super expensive mediocre performer.

@@xforcepc Yes Michael you convinced me. I have come around and about a week ago asked X Force Sales to spec. out a Comet based Flight Sim PC configuration. Following is info to help you customize an XForce proposed configuration . Beside the RG90 49" monitor, I also have a Track IR, Pro pedals and a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Joystick so should be Ok, right??? I fly my Bristell N67PV from KCEU [Clemson] in the left seat with a stick in my left hand, including hand brakes on the sticks, plus a center console hand throttle . You seem to think a separate instrument touch screen is better with this monitor? My airplane panel has a dual G3X touch screen plus a Garmin GTN 625 mainly for IFR, Garmin autopilot & 2 radios so I wonder if someone has an air manager to come anywhere near close to replicating it? I am curious as to when you expect to have a proposal for me? I am hearing that PC parts are getting scarce..... Thanks Steve Chase
