@charleslindeman2169

Well, yeah getting bitten is always a risk from wild cockatoos as they love to chew on things. But they are really smart, I once had one fly into my house through the kitchen window and knock on my bedroom door asking for a feed. Also it's not illegal to feed them(although discouraged), you just have to keep in mind that they're wild animals and will occasionally snap at you so never let your guard down around them.

The bird clearly knows that, turning the tap = water. Why else would he perch there and gesture towards the tap. When the human turns the tap, the Cockatoo knows where the water will come out. That is why it is a smart bird. It has observed, and seen how water can be procured from this device, yet, as a wild animal, it can still coax humans into turning the tap!

One cockatoo that used to go in my mum's yard knew my mother fed the birds so he would screech to be fed. If you were slow doing it, he would look inside the back windows of the house to see if you were watching and then move over to the rose bushes. If you didn't get moving a flower every minute or so would be snipped off by his beak. He would then look inside the house after every beheading to make sure you saw what the consequences were. Prick of a bird, but very intelligent.

Mine tried this sort of stuff on me, but I taught them no & they're all really well behaved now. One young ones still chews my lattice a bit, but boss bird nips him everytime he does, cause he knows I don't tolerate that & finds it better for everyone if he takes care of it instead of making me do it. I've given that one a toy to play with - a bought bird toy with lots of timber pieces & a bell on the bottom & I'm fine for him to play with & chew that, but boss bird doesn't even let him chew that one! My window watching one was throwing everything I had in a basket over my hose, so I ended up just having to empty that basket & fill it with throwables instead & just let him do it, but no food until he stopped & went & sat quietly at a different location, so he learnt pretty fast to do that. Much of that was actually accidental, his window tapping coincided a few times with when I was on the phone with business calls, so couldn't stop them to feed him, just had to try not to laugh at him during the call, but through that he learnt the tapping on the window & throwing stuff didn't work. He did also try chewing my flyscreen, but I banged the window hard immediately when he did that & he got the message. One of my neighbours has no flyscreen left due to the cockies, so I wasn't going to put up with that. One of mine nowadays actually brings his own chewing gum to chew while he's waiting for me to come & feed lol

Furthermore, different species of parrots belong to different families, and subfamilies. Cockatoos to the Cacatuidae family; macaws to the Psittacidae family; conures to the Psittacidae subfamily Arinae; lovebirds to the Psittaculidae family; budgerigars to the Psittaculidae subfamily Loriinae…those are a few of the major parrot families and subfamilies.

Yes I think maybe the first time it was the human who initiated it and the cockatoo learned from that. Now he just sits on the thing and waits for a human to turn up.

WOW, that's a smart bird! From point 0:27, it gestures at the handle as if to say, "Yeah, right there. Make it work?" I'd be afraid of getting bitten, though.
@charleslindeman2169

My cockatoo drinks a lot of water. This lil guy was definately using body language to tell you he was thirsty! Tyvm kind man!
Can someone please invent a drinking fountain that cockatoos can operate, thanks.
This is so cute!!! The way he moves his head to show he knows how it works but he's too weak to do it himself! It's so cute!!!
That's very nice of you to turn the tap for him. Just had to say.
Lovely! Makes me super happy to watch that. They are such gorgeous and clever birds. Thanks for giving her/him a drink.

Simon V I know! Those beaks are strong and sharp, and can do quite a bit of damage (a mate of mine got an unwanted nose piercing by his pet cockatoo). They are very intelligent and affectionate, though, and in the video you can see that there is no aggression. Of course, it's still wise to be cautious.

"stop patronising me and just gib water"
He just waits there until a human comes with the strength to turn the wheel for him. Pretty Smart.
What a beautiful creature, WOW!!!!
That was ever sooo sweet. Thank you for respecting his wishes and being so very kind. I wish whole world will see this and learn from you and your friends. GREAT JOB!!!! Thumbs UP!!!!
As I have long studied and worked training animals with the science of behavior using positive reinforcement ..and with the University studies we have seen again and again the great intelligence of so many species and parrots are one extremely intelligent species..much more so than even our beloved dogs ( shhh please don't tell my pup sleeping under my legs I just said that!).
I have a sulfur crested cockatoo named Sydney. He is very smart. It is neat to see the wild cockatoos demonstrating their intelligence with humans. Nice video.
That birds body language said "its ok just turn the handle I wont take your finger off"
This is wonderful. Smart bird coaxes nice humans to turn on the water...Love it!
why is people voting thumbs down? this is amazing that this bird shows how smart he is asking for water

Charlie does this at our sink! Hahaha. We had to change the faucet because he could turn on the old one all by himself. Funny how he never bothered to turn it back off. ;) Cockatoos truly are some of the most intelligent, intuitive creatures out there, period.
It was very kind and generous of that man to help the cockatoo get a drink of water.

Incredibly touching.🕊 GOD bless you, whoever you are.☘
The bird's probably thinking, "these humans are so smart! Can't believe I taught them how to turn on the fountain!"
00:34 the guy slowly nears his hand to the tap, trusting the bird not to become aggressive, and the bird is keeping calm trusting that the human will not hurt em. I dunno, but this amazing. Also, this video reinforces the fact that cockatoos understand the concept of causality.

Anne Swanson, ravens, crows, magpies, and jackdaws are not in the same family as parrots - they’re in the Corvidae family. This family of birds is known for the intelligence of its’ members.

Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down? Definitely a cute little video. Most people don't realize that parrots have the cognitive ability of a 3 to5 year old child. Scientifically that places them at 30 to 40 times smarter than a dog or a cat.

Thanks guys. You are so kind. These birds are very harmless.
"I am quite parched. Human! Make yourself useful!"
They look like they have very soft bellies.
In Sweden, no wild bird is tame like this. They might accept humans 5 meters away if we are moving. Just a glance at them might cause them to fly away a bit. Some exceptions though. Tweets and similair birds might take food from the hand when they are breeding.
So cool, they are not dumb for sure.. soon they will take over entire Australia..
The bird knew that the handle had to turn for the water. It touched it to indicate his need to the human.
He is a bright lad. At 0:40 he anticipates the water before it's turned on.

That Cockatoo knew full well the human was going to help him. The trick was to persuade him that he wouldn't get bitten. There's a saying "don't bite the hand that feeds you" and these Cockatoos know it well! :D
Bird: I know what the knob is for, but sadly, I do not have thumbs. :( I need a human for this special puzzle.... or at least a monkey.
how do birds know that we understand him is fascinating, the turning on water part I understand, he might have observed alot of people doing that, so he knows who to ask.
