MV Explanation: For me, this video is more like a contemporary criticism of the Japanese concepts of Honne (本音) and Tatemae (建前). For example, there are these kanji's that keeps showing in this video, among them are: 忍 which means to endure or restraint; 恐, which means scary or fear; 陰, which may represent shadow, gloom, or behind. Those kanji represent how their own culture still restrains the Japanese youth. They need to put on a mask (Tatemae) that is most probably NOT who they are inside. Thus, mental health issues is prevalent among youth and adults because you must put on a mask and show you're okay even if you're not. The video shows, however, the effort to rise above and show what a person wants. The video even shows them burning the kanji's and the mask; this scene ultimately represents how the Japanese youth must show who they really are, albeit in retaliation to their own culture. By doing so, they can choose what to do with their life or show their true self (Honne). Also note that there is a "foreign-looking" individual or (外国人) "gaikokujin" in the video, which could say a lot about the issues of inclusivity and diversity in Japanese society. As for Rurouni Kenshin, the video alludes to the anime's narrative because it shows how Kenshin has been in a constant struggle in choosing his true intention of supporting the new era, at the cost of his happiness. This is such a refreshing and strong video! Congrats to OOR and HΛLF TIMΞ FILMS!

I really like this explanation and thought. As a Japanese American, I can definitely understand how the tatemae and honne aspect comes into play. In Japan, this tatemae/honne aspect is ingrained into the culture and society itself. From a young age we’re taught to never show our true feelings to the public, as respect and orderliness is very important and to bring shame to yourself or your family is a taboo thing. Therefore, we don’t want to cause problems for others. While it is important to practice some sort of aspect of this, too much is not good and can literally eat you from the inside out. That being said, I do believe that all cultures around the world practice tatemae/honne to some degree. I am glad that today’s younger generations are a bit more outgoing and not afraid to speak up, but that being said, Japan has a long way to go still. I’m glad One Ok Rock has songs like these though. It’s a very powerful song with a very deep meaning.

抜刀斎時代の剣心の心の中をそのまま歌詞にしたような曲で好き。Beginningのエンディングで流れたときは感動した。

一般からの応募だからクオリティ低いやつを期待してた 期待してたって言ったら言い方悪いかもしれないけど今までのワンオクのMVのイメージを覆してくれるようなそんなのを見てみたかった だがしかし かっこよすぎる プロだな

I watched the netflix series rurouni kenshin and the ending was super sad, then this song play and it was the most beautiful thing ever. Then proceeded to watch the second, and third movie. Glad i found this master piece.

I remember back then 'We Are's' lyrics contained "They will never break our hearts of gold" and now it's "I smash my broken heart of gold" Although it might look like in a bad direction, but for me its just a message to tell us that, "Sometimes if that goal is not working out even when you did 100% more effort or if it had costed your very sanity, it's okay to just say "I've failed, but I will be continue on another path". Amazing song as always ONE OK ROCK!

MV THEORY: While I can’t read Japanese that’s presented in this MV, which I suppose may, or may not give out hints, I’ll just base this off of everything else. There are two persons in this story: the outer one (man w/o a mask), and the inner one (man w/ a mask). The outer person seems to be searching for something, and just keeps on scrambling, losing hope with each passing day/hour. The inner person, meanwhile, feels empowered; he feels active and just relaxes as he continues to sway/dance/do something (which is why that part is shown at the chorus). At the bridge, we see the outer person entering the lake, as the inner one watches from a distance (there’s actually two instances of the inner person here; one depicted inside of something, and another from the lake). As the outer person, who seems to be attempting suicide, kills himself, the inner person feels empowered even more. However that comes to an end at the outro part of the song, where the outer person strives to get out of the lake, who seems to have been enlightened by his actions, telling himself that it was never a good idea to end his life. The inner person struggles against the outer one to pull him back into the lake, to no avail. He fails at the end, with the outer person going back into the roadside for a trip, as the inner person grasps his hand, wondering if the outer person would ever change his mind. Getting to the point of this story, I guess they might’ve interpreted the “Broken Heart of Gold” as something that’s dark, frightening, imagined as an entity that resides within you. Where the outer and inner persons are one and the same; you just have to figure out which side you’re on. And in this case, the outer person chose not to commit death, because he realized, maybe after being helped by a person for his trip, that hope isn’t totally lost. Overall, this music video depicts the struggles of life. It depicts people in their most human nature, and like, in every one of us, there’s always a darkness that resides within, especially when the hardest of things hit. We just have to figure out a way and make a choice, whether to embrace it, or to keep moving forward, just like Kenshin/Battousai. Congratulations to the winning entry! This is really deep!

My Theory of this MV is that the masked guy is his dark side, symbolling dark thoughts, cruel past, making him want to end his life. This is why while the man was searching and suffering, the masked guy was dancing around, like he appreciates the pain and suffer being added to the man. Once the man discovered this mask and the room that symbols his past and all the demons and mess in his heart, with the help of a stranger, he decides to burn it all, this is when the man was able to walk out of the water, the the masked demon was being dragged towards the water, while holding the mask in pain. I vision the ending rain storm scene as a symbol of salvation, since rain cleanses all. On the truck the man looked forwards and a ray of light shined on his face. This is probably him that has overcame his demons and decided to move along. This is a good MV that makes us think and the visions can be related to us in so many conditions, good work KOJI KASHIHARA × AKIRA MIYAZAKI!
