After Puebla my next stop was Acapulco. These days the city is mostly known for the high crime rate. But in this episode I don't want to address the topic of safety because that will be something for a future video.
This time I wanted to talk a little about using layers in street photography. Not only that because I also wanted to show you how you can practice to get more layers of interest in your photos. Personally, I think the beach is a great location to get used to the concept, especially when you just got started with shooting street.
See you soon in the next one!

Layering is in fact a crucial part of street photography. There are actually four layers in a photo: Foreground, middle-ground, background, and the so-called golden rule composition layer - and three of them can be quite easily controlled. Two of those layers are always static, nearly always the background and, depending on you motif, either the foreground or the middle-ground. One of the latter two is dynamic, and that is what you need to hunt for, to concentrate your awareness on. The fourth layer, the golden rules, is semi-dynamic or semi-static, since it is limited to three or four options and you have to decide based on the emerging situation which one to use when composing the picture. The secret for good street photos is to position in that way, that the two static layers are composed, and you need have to wait that your anticipated motif walks into it, most often literally - and simultaneously to decide, where - according to the golden rules - you want to put your main motif in the picture. This of course needs some training, but with time, it becomes a second nature. Also, this is a different approach to e.g. Cartier-Bresson's walking around and looking for decisive moments. I can't walk around that good, since I'm in a wheelchair, so this more static "laying in wait and hunting" approach works well for me - and makes it much easier to work with layers.

The 21mm Voigtländer Color Skopar on the Fuji is great too. It's slower at f/4, but it's tiny, even with the M mount converter. Very well suited to the X-E4 setup and super sharp.

Hi guy, i just 100% agree with you, it's really on the beach that it's the easiest to do good photography with layers.

Down some really wonderful video. I think a photo of the long boats behind you in the parking area would’ve been a great attempt at layering also.

I like your videos from Mexico! It's always very interesting. Would be cool if you tried some South American countries in the future. I wonder why you acquired the X-E4, it's a nice surprise, I also consider this camera + the pancake for travel.

Compositional layering helps your eye travel through the image leading to the most important point of interest. At the very least they should help balance out the positive/negative space, although sometimes the imbalance can be used for good effect.

I really do get inspired by your videos. Thank you. I wouldn't add that maybe you don't need the repetitive background music? But other than that thanks for the excellent motivation.

Thanks for this cool video, it remembers me a previous video in witch you said you shot with auto iso on digital. Am I correct? If yes, do you play with the exposure compensation dial, or you leave it on 0 continuously? I presume you used a multi metering setting too.

Check out Alex Webb. I don't know how he does it but he's the master of layering people in street photography. Not to discount the fact that this is a very good introduction to layering.

Despite your info about the amount of murders your video and shots are so peaceful. And all of your Mexico videos are. I wonder, why did you choose Mexico for your travel/shooting location ??? And as always, thanks for sharing .
