One of the first LEGO sets with paper bags inside - hands-on test & sustainability update
Ғылым және технология
During the 2022 LEGO Fan Media Days we had a presentation about LEGO's sustainability efforts, and we were also among the first ones to get a sample of a set with the brand new paper bags inside.

Agenda 2030, World Economic Forum, the great reset and the new world order, you'll own nothing and be happy about it . . .
I remember those little boxes from way back where the pieces weren't sealed in the box. The sound of the loose bricks in the box when you shook it is still my most favorite sound ever. 😊

I think the fact that current LEGO bricks still fit the ones from 1958 already makes them sustainable. You can collect even the old pieces and they're less likely to end up in a landfill. That is what makes LEGO a different kind of TOY, it is Multi-generational.

This is what I think of when I think about sustainability. Not like what electronics do, and cut out pores or have proprietary connections. Appke is the biggest culprit of doing this, and telling people that they don't need a certain connector or feature. Who are they to tell others what they need or dont need?

I'm 44 and still have bricks my dad used to play with when he was a kid. Amazing.
Back in the 70s and 80s the bricks wers simply loose in the cardboard box, no bags! This was OK for most pieces, but you can imagine that windows, windscreens and large non-studded surfaces did suffer.
finally, so happy they started with using the new paper bags
Glad to see they finally came with this. I love them already!
I wasn't exited when I first heard about paper bags in lego boxes, but after seeing the actual paper bags in a set, while I'm still not totally satisfied with it, it is a little bit better than I thought it would be.
@kentslocum

Very innocent question--what does not satisfy you about the paper bags? Sure, they're not transparent, but as long as they're numbered, it shouldn't be a problem. (Correct me if I misinterpreted your comment, because maybe you meant that you have always been disappointed by plastic bags, and was worried that paper bags would be even more annoying).
Got that set ages ago, but would buy it twice with those plastic free bags. I might need a back up of the great mini-fig it brings along. The idea for making them resealable is great, so you don't even throw away the plastic bags, now cool paper bags. For some, the only plastic we should really care and keep flawlessly is the actual Lego toy. Not me, I sometimes save around the house everything the set brings. Thanks for the update, good move from The Lego Corp.
FINALLY!
Too bad that they can’t be transparent , as I far prefer the look, but I guess better for the environment
I've always hated the plastic bags but the crunch sound is nice but I do agree on the paper bags
i might miss the pastic one but im all in for paper bags ... i still recall sending to the recycling bin countless plastic bags from sets
@kentslocum

You're lucky. I'm not allowed to put those plastic bags in the recycling bin in my area. Instead, I just collect them in a giant cardboard box.
I am excited for this change. I get frustrated as I don't have a place near me for recycling Lego bags, and the adult sets often have a LOT of bags as they are often used to make the building experience easier. Can't wait for this to trickle up to Technic sets.
@kentslocum

True! I currently collect all of my LEGO plastic bags in a giant cardboard box, hoping that one day I can find a place that will accept them for recycling. Throwing them away isn't an option, since it would be both extremely wasteful and expensive (I pay for garbage disposal, so I prefer to use the smallest garbage can available, and there's only enough room for food waste, since my area doesn't have a separate composting collection system).
I am happy with paper bags. They looks cleaner and more easier to tear open them.
It would be cool if they had different designs or characters so it could be used like a coloring bag for kids
I still remember trays in lego boxes.
Great breakdown! Way more interesting than I thought it would be.
Seeing that you can now fold up the bags is a much better idea then the plastic bags. Because I hate being intoxicated while building a Lego set and opening the wrong bag And now you have an open plastic bag full of parts that can spill at any moment. But with the paper bag system if you mess up and open the wrong bag you can fold it.
Would like to say I always love your balanced, well thought-thru reviews - thanx Balazs (hope I wrote yr name right)!
I think the only downside is you can't look inside, which in specific circumstances can be annoying.

I tend to leave large pieces in bags so these bags would make that idea useless. I guess I shall change how I do things from now on.
@kentslocum
Жыл бұрын
Only if the bags aren't numbered, and even in that case, only if you were trying to extract one individual piece at a time, which is inefficient. If I buy a set for a specific piece and don't intend to build the entire set, I'll still look through the instruction manual to figure out what bag the piece is in. And then I dump the bag out onto a tray with a raised edge, so all of the pieces are easy to see. I'll then dump the contents of the tray into a ziploc bag, which has the advantage of being both transparent and resealable.
They seem like an upgrade - the plastic ones are prone to tearing more and more during the build and parts spill out of the sides. In future I could see vintage bricks being prized more highly due to robustness - something will definitely suffer as they try new compounds.

It’s certainly _possible_ , but recyclability and durability aren’t necessarily in opposition. Even biodegradability and durability can coexist, if the product isn’t used in similar conditions to how it is disposed. I’m hoping TLG figures out how to have sturdy Lego pieces made from something other than fossil fuels which last just as long in normal use, but can be effectively recycled.
Great video !!!
it seems like a lot of people have mixed feelings, but I think this is just because its such a radical change. Even if people believe paper packaging is not technically as robust as plastic, looking at the bigger picture and how much less waste shows us that its worth it
Thanks for the review as always. I'm wondering: can you hear the difference between paper bags and plastic ones in a sealed box if you shake it a bit? If you can, I can picture people shaking boxes in Lego shops from now on. :)
Finally it has begun! I had been getting impatient for the transition to occur, but I'm glad it's still happening.
I think the paper bags look much nicer.
I would love if one of the paper bags per set was re-sealable for extra parts storage. I know it would mean one bag couldn't be 100% recyclable, but it would be nice for storage of those extra parts and being able to label those extra parts by set
muito interessante, gostei, espero ver nos proximos legos essa bag de papel
this will take building experience to a whole new level, and besides the blank white rendered manuals looking horrible, I actually do like the blank bags with lego bricks on them
Great washing... These bags are "paper-based" and still contain a thin plastic lining. Also paper bags take four times as much energy to produce than plastic producing mor CO2
Finally 😁
i used to look through the transparent bags in order to find pieces untill i used my brain and realised that dumping the contents of the bag onto the table is a lot easier
Really happy to see the change. I was never really a fan of the plastic, it's only real advantage was that it was clear, but the sheer amount of plastic waste from a set was always an unpleasant experience.
1. paper bags are good because paper is one of the most recycled item. 2 soft plastics and foams make pointed pieces like swords and propellers safer after all the lego sets have to be safe for all ages adults are not the only ones using legos.
I prefer the paper bags, environment comes first

Has any of you ever been near a paper mill? I can assure you it's far from ecological and it actually reeks of human piss and death. It also consumes a lot of fresh water.
Paper bag can stand and fold, but i don't think we gonna use it for storage. Anyway, paper bag should be support for enviroment care.
I'm looking forward to these paper bags. The plastic bags are very loud and tend to trap small pieces in the corners.
I really don't care about plastic or paper bags, i just need bricks😁
I wonder how those paper bags will work out for KZreadrs?Some youtubers like to show the unboxing and show the bags and whats in them.They wont be able do that anymore.
Tbh they look far better than the plastic one
I'd prefer plastic resealable zip bags to be honest, they could be reused for storage, I think they only chose paper bags to cut costs since plastic is becoming more expensive by the years and improve profits, I wonder if 10-20 years from now the bricks will be made from paper too
As much as I will miss the look of the plastic bags when building, I also see that the paper bags are necessary
All this time they should have been making durable resealable plastic bags that can stand on their own
Paper bag is quite good.
eu só acho q tem varios legos q a caixa poderiam ser beeemm menores, isso usaria menos papel tbm, e facilitaria transporte e armazenamento (em larga escala, qualquer redução fica enorme)
Imagine how bag collectors feel now
Will I like them more than the plastic ones? I'm not sure. The plastic looks nicer but the paper looks like it will be easier to dispose of. In general I'm all for making it more environmentally friendly, so two thumbs up.
Hello Balazs, i know you don’t usually do leaks but are you excited about the leaked cars coming in 2023 in speed champions and technic?
How did you know in which box they used paper bags?
just something else to contribute to the sky high price for legos nowadays
3:01-3:07 I'don't open the plastic bag that way, I open them in the middle so I can reuse them to store any segment of the build.

1nd kudos to lego on more sustainable packaging 2st it's meme levels of funny how lego will experiment, achieve success, innovate, improve in some many areas, always holding the highest quality standards but also always refusing to make good brown bricks that wont break on sight lol it's like a staple now, almost as classic as the 2x2 red brick lol
What does "fully recyclable" mean exactly? Since the PP of the bag is also "fully recyclable", and this paper clearly still uses a plastic film on the inside. So you probably can't just throw it in the paper bin, while People will obviously do this which will result in even worse recycling with plastic mixed in with paper.
@RacingBrick

According to the team the paper can be thrown in the paper bin, the percentage of paper in the bag allows it. I assume other packages that you put there are not 100% paper either, there should be an industry standard for it.

@@RacingBrick Ah superb, thanks! Lol it really doesn't matter. Not sure if they are helping by making less plastic or hurting trees by using more paper :P It's a bunch of plastic sold in a plastic :P it's fine. paper is fine
damn, I was going to build one of my lego sets that aren't being made anymore but I guess I won't even open it if lego is replacing the bags with something disgusting. I hate paper
The paper bags just feel so… un-Lego. I know it’s better to reduce plastic and all that, but one of the most iconic things about Lego, to me, are the transparent plastic bags. I’m sure I’ll get used to it, but in the meantime it feels very wrong. xD
i have the non paper version of this set huh
The "elephant in the room" is that.. the very thin plastic bags use less "plastic" than even one x1 piece of lego, so as usual it's the "green" thing but really if the world was about to die from this "stuff" then we should not make lego. But it's all objective, like .. paper straws because.. and then they get a plastic sleeve to put them in.. 😂
It looks like a US army Apache helicopter
Good on Lego but... ...we could have really go without different printed designs on the bags. We've been getting plastic bag with a simple numbers printed on it for years and it's enough, they get trashed or recycled anyway. Adding more steps of production to a "consumable" utility just increase the cost and it's for sure getting reflected in the overall prices of sets. From a manufacturing standpoint it's counter productive, useless and don't make any differences on the end product.
Most sets today, (2023) I think, still have plastic bags…
Whatever you say. Opening a nice new lego plastic bag has to be the most satisfying thing ever.
Those paper bags won't help an environment They exist only for high ESG score
@Dan-2025
Жыл бұрын
I'm concerned with what will happen if a sets gets water damaged, with airtight plastic you don't have to worry but with the new paper that will be a problem, plus also since paper is fibrous, it might break down when you've got an unopened Set for a decade or more and it gets dusty, I'm not a fan of this change
I really think it's a downgrade. There are so many biodegradable plastic options available, and Lego isn't a cheap product, so I would expect them to come up with better solution that provides both sustainably and functionality of the current transparent bags
@RacingBrick
Жыл бұрын
Most biodegradable plastics require quite special conditions for the process and I don't think their collection is wide spread. Paper is one of the most commonly collected recyclable material around the world, so chances for these to be properly recycled are much higher.

Biodegradable plastic degrade and decompose in time. A Lego box with pieces stored in biodegradable plastic bags could end up with all the bricks in the box if kept on a shop shelf for a number of years
@RacingBrick
Жыл бұрын
@@CharloBagis not really. The term biodegradable plastic is incorrectly used for plastics that simply decompose into tiny pieces (microplastics) that still has a very much negative effect on the environment, and also used for plastics that needs special environment (temperature and other components) to fully decompose. Most of these won't simply "disappear" in the nature.

@@RacingBrick This is from a 3 year old BBC article "Novamont, producer of Mater-Bi - a starch-based plastic used in the compostable carrier bags launched by the Co-op this year. A report released by the company and conducted in partnership with Hydra, a German marine research institute, and the University of Siena, Italy, says that the product fully biodegrades in seawater on a timescale of between four months and a year, leaving no toxic residues." @@mity0k so you are convinced that the employees of that multi-billion dollar company did not do their homework and they simply ignored the wonderful other possibilities you can find with a 5 minute google search simply because they are arrogant enough to do so? Tbh I'll miss the plastic bags, I couldn't really care less about the packaging being more sustainable (Although it isn't a bad thing). However, I'm actually a little excited. I feel like this will give Lego even more of a premium feel again, and I am impressed with how they've handled it. My only concern is when buying new sets second-hand you used to be able to see through the plastic bags to make sure you were getting legit Lego without opening it, but I feel like knock-off companies will have a hard time replicating the paper bags so, for now, I see this switch as a total win.

Honestly, this is pretty dumb. Most people dont recycle to begin with, so either way the majority of this is being thrown in the trash at the end of the day. Plus not to mention, a huge number of cities have been caught taking their recycle trucks and dumping it all in the landfill, so even if you do recycle, chances are its not even going where you think it is.
