One of the Coolest Cruising Destinations I have Visited: Smokehouse Bay on Great Barrier Island

Episode 342 : Season 10 : New Zealand - Aotearoa
Hello Friends,
On this episode I have a lovely slow sail across Port Fitzroy to the legendary Smokehouse Bay. I had heard a lot of hype about this spot and I have to say it far exceeded expectations. Where else can you sail up to an almost empty anchorage, drop the hook, head ashore and start a fire for a hot water bath, smoke fish and make a pizza in the pizza oven? Oh Yeah you can also do you your washing in the basins near the pizza oven.
This was a really remarkable place and easily one of the coolest cruising destinations I have ever visited.

As a kiwi I sailed to smokehouse bay in Jan for first time. After yr prev Great Barrier Island videos I thought u may have missed Smokehouse Bay. Last night i was there about 50 attended a pizza night all contributing what they had left on their boats for toppings. Baths were overflowing with bubbles and i just remember the laughter from the group. New born babies through to people in their 80’s including global cruisers. What a treat- vow to drop off a box of shampoo and bubble bath on my next trip through. Hope this model can be replicated in bays around the world

Wow, I would have had some loves ready to bake, or a pizza ? Those ovens are absolutely my favorite ! As it is I put a pizza stone in my wood stove, works fine. That water heater was something I wanted here, but I just put big stainless pots of water on my wood stove, works fine. I could easily set something up like that because the shower/tub is on the other side of the wall. Mike from not far away from the Redwoods of Northern California, the big fat coastal ones. 300 foot tall ones. My dad retired early to a 40acre place with mom. He had built all this stuff. He had enough pressure to have a hot shower from the water heated by the wood stove, or a nice bath. He improved the value quite a bit, paid 10 grand for the place and sold it for 400 grand. He and Mom hated leaving it.

That has to be best video of yours I have seen (apart from the LA to Hawaii trip). Now I know what it feels like to pull up the anchor and wait for a bit of wind to come along and grab you, taking you forward. It was like really being there. Being a non-sailor that was pretty awesome. Smokehouse Bay, omg, a sailor's paradise - just loved the woodheater setup to heat the hot water, and a luxurious hot bath. Lucky you had the place to yourself. Then back to Triteia, and nice read, relax and wait till nightfall, just absorbing the surroundings. That is the life!! I'm gushing I know, but I really did feel it. If I get to NZ anytime, I'm definitely going there, will hire a tinny 😛 Thank you Sailor James and Happy Sails.

Many years ago I had the privilege of sailing as crew on a Cork boat named “Moonduster” in Cowes week, the Chanell race and the Fastnet watching Steinlager 2 show her pace and even shared a wave with the big man himself. What an inspiration Peter Blake was for all sailors, past and present, may God bless his soul! SkipRay, Kerry, Ireland.

Great to see you are making use of the fabulous spell of Weather we have been having here in New Zealand James. Great Barrier Island is indeed beautiful, And I have had many wonderful sailing and Tramping Experiences there. Last time was 2 years Ago, when myself and a Prince of Tahiti, on his first Sailing experience, sailed the 45ft Hartley Southseas Ketch Wanderlust from Thames, to Colville, on the first Afternoon, then a very Bumpy indeed, with 5m NE swells and Gustingto over 50knot NE wind Colville Channel crossing to Whangparapara, where we pulled in just on sunset in late May, amidst an incredible boilup of kingfish, Mackerel and smaller baitfish exploding meters into the sky. The anchorage at Coppermine bay, was perfect for the Night, and 4 beautiful snapper were caught within 20 minutes of dropping anchor. We had, had to make a dash from Tauranga, with only 4 days warning from her then owner, that she was going to be cut up if not rescued, get Wanderlust off the hard at the Thames handstand, an hour after we arrived and make the trip, first time I had sailed her with only some dodgy batteries and a 55lb electric trolling motor, as her Ford diesel wasn't running. Which proved adequate, though a bit hairy a few times. The Colville channel and Northern part of the Eastern Coast of the Coromandel peninsula can be VERY Hairy, with nasty Capes that can suck you in from miles out to sea in patchy Easterlies, with big swells. Not sure if you are spending some time in the Hauraki gulf, it's lovely on the West Coast of the Coromandel too. Except watch out for scamsters and thieves if you go to Coromandel harbour 🤭🙄. It's Notorious, especially in the Summer peak season. Wanderlustshipcom is the gee address I think I sent you earlier. Still in Tauranga, With Wanderlust, and Tawai the fifty ft Wharram Oro, and a Noelex 22 trailersailer racer too now. Feel free to touch base if you are coming down to Tauranga. Or whenever. Aaron
