It’s a great watch. I bought the blue dial version as soon as it came out and love it. Well worth the cost. Only down side: bracelet doesn’t have enough micro-adjustments. But the quality and feel of the bracelet is very good. And the watch is very flexible; can be worn in work environments or casual situations. Perfect travel watch.

Purchased both the black dial and the limited edition white dial when this watched was first release. As someone who collects true GMT watches I was egger to get my hands on these Sharp Edge models as I felt the price was too good to pass up. After a year of ownership I have found these watches to be one of the best price to value propositions you can find in the watch world. The GMT movement is reliable and accurate and the watch looks much more expensive then it is, and as an earlier post mentioned this is a watch that will not be stolen off your wrist in LA or London. Due the targeting of tourists wear expensive watches I typically now travel with the black dial Sharp Edge GMT and the Seiko Willard. Both look great, tell time well, are a very good value and do not attract the attention of would be thieves. I would highly recommend the Sharp Edge GMT. One final comment I also own the Mido Ocean Star GMT and it should be noted that it is a very large watch even for my 7.25” wrist. Nice watch but the bracelet I feel is lacking and legibility is just ok. It does have a great power reserve and I is an accurate watch.

I bought the blue dial, a year ago, when they were first released. After seeing all of them in person, I would recommend buying the blue dial first, then the black second. The black dial is beautiful, but you lose some of the 3-dimension look of the dial, because of the darker color. Overall, a great watch. This was my first watch, before I fell into the watch collecting rabbit-hole. It is a solid choice, and still gets 50% of my wrist time at work, even though it is my cheapest watch (great value). Also, it is a great travel watch. It is nice enough to look impressive, without causing the threat of being stolen. It strikes a really good balance in my collection, and gets a lot of wrist time.

I only tried this one on without buying it, but as long as you could take the larger and thicker dial that would make you feel the watch all the time, as well as the unorthodox 6 o'clock date dial, this is a great everyday watch especially for someone managing cross-time-zone business or travel a lot for a very affordable price. I am also of the opinion that this is more or less targeted at the GMT line of Grand Seiko as an alternative for about 1/5 to 1/6 of the price.

FINALLY a review on the Sharp Edge GMT. The way I see it, the Mido Ocean Star GMT is the sportier, more tool-y side of the coin called the True GMT GADA under USD1500 with this Sharp Edge as the way dressier, a bit sporty side with this really gorgeous dial*. I have the 140th anniversary variant (SPB223J1); despite the rather strange decision on the rehout color** I believe this is the variant to get, then the SPB303 that was just released. If anything the 140th anniversary edition converted me into a white dial person - the Sharp Edge dial is *that* good. Now to find a gorgeous leather strap for this... * apparently the Sharp Edge series has MORE colors in line. All of them beautiful in their own way. ** the dark blue should have been on top IMO, but Seiko is rational, they have Reasons™ why they put the white on top, the blue at the bottom

GMT movements such as the Sellita 330-2 can be configured either way - if the manufacturer opts for the jumping hour hand, then this is done at the expense of a quick-set date, whereas with the "office" type the quick-set date function is preserved at the cost of the jumping hour hand. As a sailor moving at 6 knots I don’t cross time zones very frequently, so I prefer the "office" configuration. In solar navigation, setting the GMT hand to "true" GMT can be used to calculate longitude, and in the modern age it can be used to configure navigational devices where you need to set the GMT offset. I suppose we could call the jumping-hour versions “airplane” GMT’s, and rename the jumping-GMT hand variety “sailor” GMT’s for the same reasons. I do get weary of the term “true GMT”, because it seem to imply that moving from an "office" to a "traveller's" GMT is an "upgrade" that requires a more expensive or elaborate movement. People who rotate between different watches in their collection need to be aware of this tradeoff in functionality. If you don’t wear your "Traveller" GMT watch every day, you will need to get used to the laborious process of winding the time set until the date clicks over to the current one. This is a nuisance as far as I am concerned, but my point is there are tradeoffs either way - you just have to decide which suits your needs best.

  • @mikesomerset6338
    @mikesomerset63382 жыл бұрын

Interesting. When considering "true" GMT (independently adjustable hour hand) this is certainly useful for travel. I had one for a good 10yrs+. However, for the last ten years or so I have had dual time for travel which I find to be far better. The GMT hand really comes into it's own when monitoring other time zones from home or office particularly when combined with a rotating 24hr bezel. For this purpose operating the 24hr hand on the first pull is very convenient. Just my opinion.

I was able to put the green dial SEIKO GMT on my wrist about a week ago. I really liked the attention to detail on the indexes. The brushed face and polished sides of the indexes made me want to keep looking at it! I wasn't in LOVE with the green dial but I liked what the watch was going for. I would really love to see the other colors in person as I wanted to see the black and knowing there is a white dial I'd be curious to know if those would look better on my wrist. I know I sound like a stuck record, but in 2022 you not only have to consider the micros, but the the Chinese watch brands showing what can be achieved re case and bracelet for less than $300. I guess the goal here though was an auto jumping hour hand gmt at less than $1.5k - a niche where there are few options. For me personally, the best bit of the video was the Mido, which I haven't seen in black/orange before - stunning watch. Take care.

I've been in the market for a sub-$2k GMT watch recently (the Mido is on my list of Possibles) and the Seiko GMT caught my eye very early on in my search. I love almost everything about it: the case design, the dial texture, the unobtrusive bezel, the hands, the overall value for the price, etc. It's slightly larger than I'd like, but it's still smaller than my Samurai, which never feels like a "big" watch while I'm wearing it. But I cannot stand that date dial. I hate it. And I'm not someone who minds busy dials; the power reserve doesn't bother me, and a date window would be just fine. But I just can't get over the date wheel, and I know if I bought this watch I'd see that damned thing every time I looked at my wrist, and no amount of case finishing or dial texture would be enough to look past it. It's a real shame, but so it goes. I'm sure there are collectors out there who love that look, and more power to them.

It surprises me that nobody ever talks about the Tissot Chemin des Tourelles GMT. It has the same movement as the Mido Ocean Star GMT, and you can pick one up new for well under $500. It's a dressier watch, but no matter. It's an ETA based jump hour GMT that's dirt cheap. I got mine new on sale for around $350. Bare in mind that Tissot and Mido are both under Swatch. I had to really dig to find that it is, in fact, the same movement. I guess it makes since that they wouldn't be keen to let the world know they are putting the same movement in a MUCH more affordable piece. I must say the quality and finishing on the Tissot is quite good too. If you travel for business, and will be wearing the watch with business casual, it's a great option. It could have been near perfect, but it's 42mm and wears more like 44mm. It won't work well on a small wrist. It just blows my mind that the watch world went crazy when the Ocean Star GMT was introduced because it was a true GMT neat a thousand bucks. Same movement for $300? Crickets!!

Seiko and seiko dealers have told me I can't get them. How could this be? It's not the greatest bracelet but I really don't want to just walk away from it either. I wonder if anybody here can help me.?

The dial is nice, but as you pointed out, at that price it’s a small step up to Swiss. I’m not an aviator or war planner, so Greenwich Mean Time at a glance has no value to me. I travel internationally and track time in Asia and Europe, so a 3-time zone GMT watch where the GMT hand moves with the hour hand is way easier for me to set. I looked a lot and found an Oris Aquis GMT date with a rotating 24 hour bezel. It also has 300m water resistance and a screw down crown. Solid tool watch and my daily driver when I’m traveling. Also got it on sale for $1700,

I’ve had the blue version for a year now and I agree, it’s nearly useless functionally (esp given my eyesight). but taken as a whole, it does add to the overall visual character of the dial; an OK consolation for me :)

Teddy, I enjoyed your video on the Seiko Presage gmt. It’s a beautiful watch but I’m not having much luck ordering from my local Seiko AD. He says it’s a botique item and hard to get ahold of. He’s trying to reach his Seiko representative to do a work-around but seems pessimistic. Any suggestions? I’m in Cleveland, Ohio USA.

I got the anniversary white dial. I went online and saw the bracelet is $200. I sometimes immediately buy a second bracelet to beat up daily. Or I remove the bracelet altogether and swap on an elastic paratrooper band, a navy blue one in this case. The watch now feels paper light and looks factory.

I don’t know, it is a stunning watch but I have a hard time trusting Seiko these days. I bought a Seiko from the prospex line and had QC issues. Yes there is an alignment issue, but mainly there is a noticeable spec of dust or damage on the actual dial. This can be seen with the naked eye with the right lighting. I first noticed it when I took a picture and went to wipe what I thought was dust on the crystal. The watch was about $650 CAD which for me is not insignificant. Seiko offered to remove the dust or fix whatever was damaged on the face, which involves shipping it across Canada and would take several months. Still undecided if I am going to do all that. Point is this leaves two scenarios for $1000+ watches from Seiko in my opinion. either a watch at this price point has the same QC issue potential with assembly as mine. Or these watches have better QC procedures which then means they could have done better but don’t care about the QC of the $650 watch they sold me. I am not sure which is worse. None of my other less expensive watches have issues like this, not my Orient Ray 2 for less than 1/3 the price, or my $50 Casio Duro. Even my older $100 Seiko SNK which is great. Don’t get me wrong I love this Seiko, it is a very cool watch and probably my favourite I have so far. I also love the variety and history with Seiko, but when I wear my Ray II with no noticeable QC issues, a more accurate movement, same crystal, same steel, is it worth paying 3 times the price for what? What part of that "prospex" price increase was premium? I Just don’t trust Seiko now in the next purchase of my watch as I move up the price point. Which I intend to be around that $1500 point.

And I don't trust Orient. I have bought a Orient Triton diver, while normal use the crown coming out and I can't put it in again. This was made in Japan... I saw many damaged Triton for sale on ebay, so the quality isn't good... Never a Orient Triton again... But with the Bambino I had no issues...

I bought the black one a little while back but I wish the green had been available at the time and for the same price. I would grudge paying the 1600 plus usd price that the retail for here at a lot of stores. Even 1000 pounds or 1250 usd is still a little costly.

Someone help me out here. I just bought this watch, a limited edition with the see through back. And since it has the rotor mechanism, I assumed it was self winding, and the power reserve feature was just for when you weren’t wearing it. I know you can manually wind it, but figured it was just for when it got low from not wearing it. The other day it stopped, the power reserve was gone, but I was wearing the watch the whole time. So is this an automatic watch or a manual wind?

Are there any True GMT options under 40mm? Midsized for small to medium sized wrists. My wrist is 6.5" and I think with these options I'm oversized. Mido, Certina and Seiko options are all over 42mm and up unfortunately. Thanks for a great review video!

I am not aware of above 1500 dollars seikos that are almost 95% of the cheaper offerings, once you go 3000 and up you get into marinemaster then the LX line which is very identical to seikos. Overall seiko delivers a lot of value at that price point.

Interesting that some consider the True GMT complication overrated! For me it's an absolute MUST with a GMT. The quality of life improvements are staggering--reverse date change (also not having to worry about the danger date change zone), instant adjustment for DST and time zone changes without timekeeping hiccups, etc.
