What I find amazing is the size of the beer bottles. man, that's when having a "couple" of beers really meant something!

haha yeah, they're almost as big as a "40" sometimes.. and i image they had a higher alcohol content in them, as compared to beers like budweiser today. thanks for watching!

Love those ink bottles! That little bottle from Akron is pretty cool also! Overall really nice dig!

When I was a kid in North Delta British Columbia, our family moved to a newly built house that was previously farmland. The foundations and remnants of the farms buildings were still in a field behind our property that was under power lines. So that wasn’t developed. We decided to plant a vegetable garden in the back yard, and immediately found old medicine bottles etc. Really nice bluish antique glass, we probably got about 8 intact bottles fairly close to the surface. Dang, wish we dug deeper,as we just went down enough to plant stuff. I’m sure it was probably a dumping ground for the farm. Think things dated back to the 1890s and before.

Tom & Jake, Y'all dug out a lot of cool sodas regardless of them being machine made. I really enjoy the history otherwise I would've never known about that area. I can't wait till y'all start digging live. Thanks for teaching me something new. Take care and be safe.✌

North Dakota is a gold mine for antuiqes. So many little towns here that are old. I'm from Bismarck, so it's nice to see exposure in the state.

The Watkins bottle is intresting. I ran Soo trains out of Mpls to Glenwood Mn and Watkins was a small town enroute. Makes sense. Very cool.

Can you explain the undigested seeds? Are these seeds that someone pooped out?

yeah.. exactly.. some seeds just dont break down in the body.. some seeds are actually designed to be eaten in fruit and passed by animals, especially birds, who poop them out, along with poop, which is a really good fertilizer.. natural selection at its finest! and seeds are basically designed to not decay underground.. sometimes seeds can remain dormant for centuries under dry or unfavorable conditions, then once an opportunity arises, the sprout.. its kind of mind blowing the conditions they can survive.. but yeah theyre just pooped out and when everything else decays, they remain

omg that sounds awesome.. they actually made it illegal to dig in oregon a while back.. i still hope there are some circumstances that change, that will allow me to one day dig there. oh and we are actually gonna be in dickinson and new england this summer.. maybe we'll end up knocking on your door by random chance

Cool I found some cool bottles from 1900-1920 in ND lakes scuba diving I probably have found close to 75 bottles last summer. Kinda addicting lol

oh i know. tom actually just learned how to scuba dive last year and we went in the missouri river.. everything was silted over in the spot we checked bc of a damn built like 100 years ago, but ive actually heard that in almost any town with a river going through it, you will end up finding bottles.. but thats a really cool way to get into bottles. and i absolutely understand the addictive part.. its a rush.. its literally treasure. and its a collectable item that you can just go out and find. unlike baseball cards for example, you have to pay money.. its very rewarding when you find something cool. and scuba diving is already awesome. thanks for watching!

oh yeah i know exactly what you mean. i always try to imagine exactly what it was like in the places we go, and to see the old photos of the area, and then contrast them with today. its crazy how much can change in just over 100 years. its even crazier when almost nothing has changed

I always feel so sad for the little girl who lost her doll. I know that the label has been given widely by anyone who finds a doll's head, but I so wish another label could be given those poor sad faces.

What do you do with all the things you dig up? I'm new to the channel so I was just wondering. I would think it would really be a lot if you kept them all

Do you keep funds other than bottles? There are people that collect broken china for crafts, and I’ve seen lots of interesting pieces that would have been really exciting to me!

well the ground will turn to a solid layer of clay in this area.. the color changes, the glass stops showing up, and the ground is alot more firm to dig through

Of these 7 ketchups you found - any body or shoulder embossed identifying specific ketchup producer and brand - or slicks with base embossing of maker's mark. I see cork tops (potentially handblown and tooled lip - or machine made, but also the earliest of potentially handblown and tooled lip screw thread tops - or machine made.

I get the old map thing but how do you know the exact spot to dig?

Jake another great video. Bottles all the way throughout the privy. As he Tom pulled out the bottles I kept saying to myself " I'll take that". And in the trash pile I see thing that I could grow plants in; a cup with a broken handle, a teapot with handles or spout missing, heck even a Old metal bowls, coffee pots. I can't wait till you start live digging so I can possibly buy these items from you. Do you do the editing of the videos or what is your actual job? I can't believe that there are so many seeds on the bottles or whatever is below. Have you tried growing some of the seeds? Thanks for taking me along on your adventures. Take care and be safe. ✌

well someone told us that after we dug their yard (obviously some of the dirt from the bottom ended up towards the top) a tomato plant started growing on the spot where we dug.. i imagine that is probably pretty unlikely to happen very often, but if the conditions are right i think the seeds can still be viable over 100 years later.. its kinda crazy to think of.. well my job is mostly editing the videos, and running the channel, although tom does help me with both of those. i usually go with on the digs when i can but my job sometimes gets in the way, i work construction so the ideal digging time is also the time when i make all my money. thats why we started running the channel bc we want to be able to make money off of what we do, bc we typically donate alot of the bottles we find. but realistically we couldnt donate all the bottles we find, bc it comes to a point when the historic societies just dont want anymore. alot of the times the home owners dont want them either, or they just want a few. We typically dont sell much of anything, bc most of them would cost more to ship than what they're worth. but yeah in the spring when we start filming again, i dont see why we couldnt just give u some at cost to ship. sometimes we have to rebury them if we dont have a place for them to go, and it honestly makes me sick to know i cant keep them all. I just want the history to be saved, and if its going to a good place, then i think thats a win for everyone. but we typically dont sell

I want to save these things to. If you would I would be willing Bitters Bottles also, you could make some cash too. I hope you keep me in mind it would be so cool to have containers from there.

yeah we usually dont dig anything that wasnt dug before like 1905, but most of the pits we actually dig are pre 1890.. unfortunately last year we stayed in our local area most of the time, where the cities popped up alot later.. we actually only dig anything after 1900 if it was a hotel or train station, as they are almost guaranteed to have at least a few decent bottles.. all of the future places we have lined up are from 1860 to 1890.. most of which will have been ghost towns by 1890.. umm if you wanna watch any of our videos from dazey, yankton, tacketts station which make up probably a little over half of the videos we have released are between 1860-1900

If there is old stinky sewage still in some of those sites, I hope you don’t get any cuts from that broken glass. You could end up with a nasty infection. Be careful!

Hello y'all just started following you. I noticed that some bottles you find appear to have liquid in them still, am I just seeing things?

lol no you are not seeing things.. its ground water that seeps into the bottle.. depending on how the bottle lands, if the top is facing up, it will fill with water, if its on its side it will fill all the way, and if its facing down when it lands, then the air inside it wont be able to escape, and the liquid wont be able to seep it.. sometimes the cork will fail early on, and the contents of the privy will seep in, and then the cork will swell, and reseal itself.. trapping the privy water inside.. its quite disgusting once you take the cork out. the smell is something hard to describe.. for the most part its just ground water and sometimes we see a weird white or yellow residue inside.. probably heroin or some other dried out subsance.. but anyways! glad to answer your question, and if you ever have anymore, dont hesitate to ask, and. we will get back to you. thank you for subbing and i hope you enjoy the. content!

haha i someone told us that a tomato plant popped up on a spot where we dug up a pit once.. but i dont know if anyone has ever intentionally tried to plant them. the ground a few feet down here stays relatively cool all summer, so i guess its plausible that at least some of the seeds are still viable

well we used to donate them to historic societies, but then the state started hassling us, so we just usually give them to the home owner, landlord, or sometimes an antique shop.. we do keep some, but id say we keep less than 5% percent.. probably closer to 1-2%. we are just basically looking for a few specific things. We have some guys that follow what we do, and we know what they are looking for, so if we ever come across it, we give it to them.. alot of people have been requesting certain items, so we were thinking about just sending some people some

We start by researching the area's history and then once we've secured permission we grid the lot out and probe. After that it's either hit or miss.

umm.. well im not exactly sure.. toms the guy in the video and i run the videos and channel.. but i do go digging with him alot, and i will totally remember to look out for one in the future.. we are actually gonna be spending some time in the bismarck area this summer, so we will likely find at least a few that say that on it.. just a matter of time really.. but if we did, it will likely be one that really isnt that much, so we could just give you one, and if we gotta mail it, then just the cost to ship would be fine.. so if you wanted to ask me again in a few months, i'll write that down and remember to be on the look out for one.. just hit me up in the comments in like june

haha yeah we know, we just filmed most of these a year or more ago, and just started editing, and we realized alot of the mistakes that we made. in the future we are gonna show the bottle longer and talk about what they were. then we will have more time to keep information on the screen.

Really enjoyed this guy's, very partial to the stoneware inks, of course hutches are gems, soooo many old beers, wow! Lived in Douglas in 1963, still looks very small, Boeing was installing missiles at the time, quite a trip down memory lane. Great fun, will certainly watch you again!!

Please quit digging with your ungloved hands you could get cut or get some kind of bacteria

As a North Dakota archaeologist, please stop looting historic sites. Trust me, I get the thrill of finding cool stuff, but as soon as you do that you eliminate the possibility of any kind of rigorous scientific analysis of the site. Also, if any of these are on public property, you've just recorded yourself committing a crime.

we donate 99% of the bottles, we write books, and we follow the law. do you understand that with urban renewal going on all across the country, more sites are being destroyed in a day across america than we could ever dig in a lifetime.. and they literally bulldoze them, rip them out, load them in a dump truck, and carry them to a landfill.. every single day... we take soil samples when its a historic site, we even have some of our pieces going to museums.. and they are private property, we always have permission. im sorry you feel that way, honestly, but we know the codes, and we follow them. and to say we are looters is extremely reductive, especially when we dont profit off this.. anything we keep from the sites, we keep..

@@BelowthePlains Yes, I understand that because as I mentioned previously I have been doing this in a professional capacity for over a decade. That line of reasoning is “wow all these wolves are becoming extinct! Better go nab one for myself.” Just because a bad thing is happening doesn’t mean you have the moral right to expedite that process. Local county museums while charming and quaint don’t really have any processes put in place for any sort of scientific documentation or even notifying the state historical society of what’s in their collections. The volunteer curator basically throw them under glass and calls it good. I mean you do you, but it’s really heartbreaking to the people who do this professionally to just watch sites get trenched by looters for literally likes and subscribes.

What I find strange is you claim to be a professional archaeologist, yet you don't have a single video on your channel documenting anything that you do in that capacity, so exactly what scientific data have you contributed to the Dakota's for the public good that these courteous young men have not done.,.

The Bismark bottles could've came in on a train.. perhaps a family with children.. bought the kids a bottle each to keep em busy..
