One of Spain's Hidden Railway Gems | Renfe Alvia from Oviedo to León

In this video I will be taking a trip with Renfe, aboard one of their Alvia services.
This stunningly scenic ride will take in the Puerto de Pajares mountain pass, in the Cantabrian Mountains in Northern Spain on what will probably be me last trip before the 25km Pajares Base Tunnel opens bypassing most of the good scenery. Ride it while it's still there!

I took a local train along that route in 2019 when wandering around the north of Spain after a Camino. It's incredible, as is the whole area around Oviedo. Also worth taking the Santago-Oviedo-Bilbao bus, it takes an incredible route around there as well. Lovel video Andy.

Fantastic scenery!! Hopefully the new tunnel will only be used by regional or long distance trains. Keep this train in opetation so that people can enjoy the mountain vistas. Thank you Andy for sharing😀😀♥️♥️

Very beautiful! I am actually not sure if the Pajares tunnel is going to be for 250 or 300 km/h. Been reading mixed information about that in press! The bad news is that the iconic, old line is closing (or at least those were the plans of the last President of Adif).

The old line is not going to be kept open for freight? I think there was a problem with dangerous freight in the tunnel.

@@MrStarfishPrime Well I'm not sure about the specifics, but Isabel Pardo de Vera said that they cannot justify the cost of keeping Pajares opened when they invested 4.000 million in the Variant. She stated that Pajares is old, unefficient and uncompetitive and that it is going to need 700 million in maintenance in the next 10 years.

@@DiscoverByRail basically catching up years and years of lack of investment. Pajares line is nearly the same built in the XIX and should have been improved in the mid XX

After briefly seeing the tracks at the exit from the tunnel (pausing the video didn't help much) it looks that there is a third rail and that the line will be available to both, iberico and standard gauge. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Good eye you have, yes the new tunnel is fitted with 3rd rail to allow passenger trains from Renfe and private operators that use standart gauge (sncf...) to use the tunnel, while the freight services will run on the old track (conventional gauge). As for the route, i have driven so much on those tracks that i remember every single curve and tunnel... But the scene you get is simply beautiful

That's fake news that Pajares Pass will close, because I think regional trains will ride in this pass, even after the opening the Pajares Base Tunnel, that has many delays & hundreds of millions of euros of overcosting Video's score: 50/10

Sorry but no. Adif says manteniance of Rampa de Pajares is too high. New Euroduals are being ordered by Renfe for freight operations, and for regional trains are 2 options, using S121 gauge changing trains or synergize seats in long distance trains (selling turista seats of long distance trains between Gijon and Valladolid at the regional fare)

@@DiscoverByRail I had planned to ride this line April 2020 ... that didn't happen. At the moment (April 2024) there is still one local train per day in each direction. But I saw quite some track materials in your video. Unless they had already started dismantling the line, they might close it for repairs but then reopen it.
