One of my most important art tools...

One of the most important tools in my art making practice is a notebook, ( it comes a close second to my sketchbooks. )
I find writing notes about my art to be such a useful exercise in understanding my art and understanding myself as an artist.
I keep a specific note book which is just art related. I don’t write in it every day - but I do try and write in it every week. It is the place where I try and capture all those fleeting thoughts and half thoughts that might occur to me about any aspect of my art making.
It is often just a stream of consciousness list. It could include notes on process, technique, things I want to try, artists I want to know more about, in it I sometimes try and articulate my philosophy of art making, or how I want my art to feel...

I collect artists' quotes that I love. Today, I wrote something you said! "Seek beauty in the mundane, extraordinary in the ordinary. By seeking beauty in our every day, every day becomes more beautiful." You said what I feel so eloquently. Thank you for another inspirational video, Helen.

Wonderful, oh gosh thank you for that.. Love Helen x
Hello, and Happy New Year, Helen….I really like your video messages so much. Watching you flip through your journals are so inspiring. I’m trying to slow down this year instead of making pages just to say I did. Now I’m creating with more focus and intent. I love your art so much. Your class is still where I go for ideas to stimulate my creativity and your book, Expressive Sketchbooks, is always close by…what a combination to get the creative juices flowing. Thank you so much for being one of my mentors on this journey of journal art making. I must say, you are a very delightful individual as you share your journey throughout the years with us in your videos….hugs 🤗❤️🙋

I'm so glad it helped in some small way! Wishing you all the best getting your creative mojo flowing. Lots of love Helen xx
I keep a log in which I reflect on the day’s work and write down ideas I get while working. I use moleskine one day-a-page large diaries for the purpose and I keep my stack close. So often I browse my old ones and my spark catches flame or I get this wondrful insight. It’s truly one of my most valuable tools indeed!

Omg this is so logical. I live the idea of a sofa sketchbook. That way when I’m watching tv and can sketch things from what they m watching and use non messy materials. That way I do it. I guess I never thought to look at it that way lol beautiful sketches

Good morning Helen, I often wonder what you were like as a little child. Whether you (like me) also spent most of your free time on coloring and drawing. And I also wonder whether as a child you had access to the better brand of crayons and felt-tip pens and paper. I personally noticed that when I was a stay-over mother at school and offering the children good quality colored pencils, etc., they also had much more fun developing their creativity. How did that go for you? love from the Netherlands 🖍️🖌️🎨

What an interesting question! I was definitely encouraged in my creativity as a child, I was unwell when I was young and so drawing and colouring were actively encouraged. And in terms of the quality of materials… I’m not entirely sure… I’m guessing they were quite good as my parents enjoyed good stationery. My dad used to buy we rolls of wallpaper lining paper as I got through a lot of paper…I also used to collect pretty papers for collage. So not much has changed! Love Helen
